I was using a tasklight CFL in an architect's type floor lamp next to my computer. It took me 6 mos before I figure out that it was giving me a terrible headache. If you break a CFL, you have a dangerous mercury spill on your hands. Disposal in landfills represent future contamination to the groundwater. The logic behind this as ok is that it's less mercury in the environment than is released by power plants. I went back to incandescent, but these are to be phased out in 2010 or so - CFLs suck.
The amount of mercury in a CFL is not that much and it will evaporate farily quickly. As a kids we played with balls of mercury in school. Mercury is toxic, but not the amount that's found in a CFL.
Mercury is not going to contaminate groundwater in land fills as volatility of mercury is quite low and it will evaporate. If you are concerend about mercury in the enviornemnt get rid of coal burning power plants.
