Believe it or not, I can see my dad in the crowd at one point of the video. That was before I was alive! :) Crazy experience to share the experience... in some way.
There's some nice percolating funk in this music...there's still some free vibe in this music. Many didn't appreciate the first comeback years of Miles, like he had to re-invent the wheel or something or his music was retro...this is killng...and different, its Miles!!!
this is my favorite track on star people, which i think is very overrated. in the studio version, mike stern leads off with a frantic, unsettling solo, but then sco follows with the smoothest lines. he totally steals the show and makes stern look a bit goofy. of course stern is great in his own way.
@videolover61 yeah, took me a while to get it. I have everything now from the Savoy/Dial sides with Bird in the 40's all the way through to Doo Bop and Live Around the World. Miles was the greatest band leader and innovator of all American music in my opinion. Note the word "Opinion" before others jump on that statement.
@Snootwaller I think I had the same dusty cassette in Sydney. I loved Darryl Jones from this period of Miles. Very soulful even with the slapping. I remember that cassette had a beautiful solo from him on a slow blues I think
@Apostolicman Miles made fusion popular and I love him like no other... over 100 CDs by Miles in my library. But... you are incorrect in your proclamation. Charles Lloyd was playing in the Fillmore with his band that featured Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette (where do you think Miles discovered them). However, even THAT isn't the origin. Listen to Frank Zappa's Freak Out and especially Absolutely Free if you want to hear the true origins of jazz fusion music - Recorded in 65/66
Rare perfomance . like it.

Well, at least he's playing without his mute...he couldn't, in his later years. And he sounds great, having just come out of "retirement"...
samsamba08 1 year ago
@samsamba08 He played without his mute regularly and freely right up to the last show in 1991.

alright! just discovered this (and the CD). I thought that We Want Miles was the last of the really great Miles stuff. Thanks!

@talkingwall
Thank you for saying that! We Want Miles had some serious shit going on, and it really was the last really "deep" music that Miles produced...

@videolover61 Well, not so sure I agree with that. I held off on Amandela for years and years, finally picked it up and was blown away.

@talkingwall
I didn't like Amandla at all...I could have sold you my copy! LOL
