ok am i the only one that sees this road as a huge fire safety hazard? how do u expect any firefighting aparatus to get to one of these houses incase of a fire? oh i forgot fire trucks can fly and hover now to make getting to fires easier (NOT) but i will admit this is an awsome road and i hope to drive down it some day.
i was driving there and the lady came out from a balcony screaming " HELLO THERES IS REAL PEOPLE LIVING HERE, DONT STOP, KEEP MOVING" BITCH why would you wanna live in Lombard street you know you allways going to have turist in front of your house, so shut up and go back to your kitchen!

There used to be many roads like this in San Francisco. They were built like this primarily in the 1800's. And it's pretty obvious why if you think about it. How well do you think a horse drawn carriage would do either going straight up or straight down a street that was this steep? It wouldn't do well at all. The curves allowed a much easier and controlled ascent or descent. This stretch of Lombard Street is one of a few like this still left in SF. There you go, class dismissed.
@art8309 its the type of street you dont see everyday. cuase that's what you do when constructing a trail or road on such steep topography, zig-zag like design i love it. i bet it was a path along time ago. now all those houses have access to garages..less illegal parking goin on now.. oh theres relavence
