NEVER BUY YOUR PETS AT A STORE!!! They're mostly unhealthy and there parents have been breeding 'till they're dead...

get your pet at an OFFICIAL breeder or animal shelter!!!

No matter how cute they look, please DON'T BUY AT A STORE!!!

The problem is, the ones in the shelters are ones bought from a store anyway. D:

There ARE some reputable pet shops- there's one in my city that has the most well kept, socialized and healthy looking rats I've seen in a shop, but it isn't a huge commercial petshop like Petsmart.

And it's very hard to find REAL breeders, especially in Canada. There are NONE in Toronto. >: So most people can't just go and buy a rat from a breeder.

@shinocicada Yeah, I know it's a problem in the States, heard it from my friends there.

Still, even they're looking after the rats as best as they can, a store isn't the best place.

Oh, I wanted to say this as well: the bedding of this rat's cage isn't good, as it's dusty and rats are alergic to dust.

If one can, buy 'ecobed'. It's the best bedding one can have for rats :-)

I know quite a bit 'bout rats: don't hesitate to ask me things. I'm not here to judge, only to help ^^

Of course it isn't usually the best place, but where I live, it is. The store I was talking about uses aspen, which isn't bad for rats at all, and Carefresh.

XD Rats aren't allergic to dust, though It irritates their lungs.

I don't think -one- bedding is the best. There are multiple types that are good to use.

:3 I'm quite educated too, having owned rats for years now. Sadly you learn even more, when you buy feeder rats. >:

Plus you use a whole lot of cash on vet bills. 8I

@shinocicada 'allergic'...It was an easier term to just note that it's not the best for their lungs, indeed. Anyway, about the vet bills, you're absolutely right! I've spend about €3000 the last two years, on vets for my rats.

I'm concidering taking a break after my 11 pet rats die(they're between 12 and 28 months old, so, I still got a while to go :) ), they're cute but die to fast, get ill too easy :(

It's always good to take a break! Because you can always go and get a few rats if you decide your break is over, but if you continue to get them and feel stressed about having them it's a very bad feeling. >:

Agreed. I bought my first four rats from a petshop. None of them lived longer than a year. Poor things all had genetic disorders (one died of heart failure, the other three had cysts in their lungs) due to overbreeding and had to be humanely euthanized. Rats already have a relatively short lifespan, and you get so attached to them so quick, so do yourself a great favour and only get them from legit breeders. It will save you a lot of heartache.

@Rinoa242 maybe true for some pet stores or countrys but here i bought my 2 lil guys at a pet story 1 of them had alot of babys a couple of years back with his partner and he lived for a long while had no illnesses was very healthy and everything he lived for 4-4,5 years he was 2 weeks or so when we got him he passed away about 2-4 years back and the rat we have now also bought at a pet store at about 3 weeks old is 2 years old now and hes doing amazing ^^ but your partually right.

this is so not true!!!! I have had several rats and have bought them from a pet store and they have been healthy and lived 2 - 4 yrs old!!! Think of it this way....saving them from getting fed to reptiles!! :)

Yes and you can tell most dumbo rats have there ears lower to the side of there heads rather than a other rat would be more up top.

@dmbfan07cb even though he's not mine yes he is. U can tell by the ears. if the ears are big like the ears dumbo had (that's y they named it that), and unlike regular rats, dumbo rats have there ears on the side of there head instead of on the top. Hope that gave u a little bit of help

Yes, but I think its the other way around.  Duey had those lowered, round ears like a dumbo rat does! Dumbo rats are way cuter though.

"Bruxing" is the term used for that soft chattering like noise they make and usually means they are happy/content. Sort of the equivalent to a cat purring. Boggling is that funny looking thing you see them do with their eyes where they basically bulge rapidly. It's often done while they brux.
