  • Fresh Meat :)

  • My hat goes off to you.

  • Elliott, I'm never gonna know you but I'm gonna love you anyhow.

  • <3<3<3<3

  • he didn't want to die, he understood he needed to.

  • @seethroughme85 wat?

  • @seethroughme85 'it's about taking a fall' RIP

  • Is it just me or does any one else get brought to tears listening to this song?? :L

  • could someone please tell the man with impossible plans to just leave me alone as well!

  • :'( - The definition of Elliot Smith's songs, there so moving.

  • if elliot smith does not touch you in Some way, ask for another shovel of dirt on your coffin...

  • The 90's really was the last era of good music.

  • I'll see you in Silver Lake, Elliott.

  • The 7 dislikers are brainless, dickless, soulless, worthless rotting sacks of camel feces who clearly wouldn't know great, passionate music even if it slapped them in the face with it's massive schlong.

They shall rot in a place lower then hell whilst Hitler and Osama shit in their mouths.

Elliott will laugh at the pathetic sight of them from way, way, way up high with his astronomically incalculable telescope and then continue conducting his 4,897th symphony in the clouds.

  • @Bendrix27 or they were thumbs downing someone else's comment...

  • @aarroth

They disliked the video. Nothing to do with anyone's comment.

  • @Bendrix27 I stand corrected... lol please feel free to dislike my comment... lol

  • @Bendrix27 wow, didnt Elliott teach us something??? so what if they dont like OUR kind of music? thats right, OUR kind of music, who knows what kind they like. anyhow, i think that its not right to be shitt taking on suck beatiful music -___-, i love this song, it reminds me of my sister.

  • @NicoleLeesOMG

    Seriously, get over it.

I was just elaborating on the usual "the dislikers are....." type of comment you see on almost every video on youtube.

I also thought it was quite fitting.

If somebody doesn't appreciate Elliott Smith, they either haven't heard his music, or they have some serious problems, it is not matter of opinion.

  • I love this song. Reminds me of when I was 16. Elliot Smith was a musical genius, period. RIP Elliot, but you live on forever.

  • love this? me too. davesplaylist.co.uk

  • I can't listen to his music when companies around, and it's gets more awkward the less I know the people. I don't think there's any way you can casually listen to Elliott Smith. There's sometimes when I can't go near it, and other times it's the only music that will do. It's kind of like booze.

  • @leeharveyosmosis

You might have the quote of the year. I might have to use this as a tagline on various music forums, if you don't mind.

  • It's like you said..."I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow"

    RIP Elliott

  • @Stepananan Really wish he was still alive Id love to have met him what an insperational bloke and an amazing singer :') X

  • Arguably one the best song writer ever. He's on the top of my "wish list" of artists I never got to see live. I posted a cover in his honor. Let me know what you think of it.

  • I've been listening to him constantly lately and on the bus today i realised that i can relate to every song he has written. It's not like Elliot intended it, he was just writing songs that sounded cool to him. That's why he's so amazing. He never meant to do anything like what he did, he was just so talented that somehow it happened. His music doesn't make me happy but it comforts me. Which right now i feel is a lot more important.

  • A PERFECT MAN, JUST PERFECT!!!! R.I.P. GREAT ELLIOTT... WE REMEMBER YOU ALWAYS... LOVE!!

  • @niryedid Did you say he was a perfect man? HE FUCKING KILLED HIMSELF YOU ASSHOLE. I hope you make yourself "perfect" too.

  • Comment removed

  • @gonefishing78 Is that you Chris Crocker? " Leave Eliot alone (sob) He's just a human being." The real TRAGEDY is your spelling. Did your mother paint your crib with lead paint?

  • @joeytwosubs What tragedy? Your tragedy. It's obvious that I'm a Smith fan, and quite obvious you're not. But that's okay, keep posing. I'm sure it's what keeps you from killing yourself...

  • good

  • yeah such a great song , well written and from the heart . i miss elliott !!

  • I'm sorry I was too late, my good man. All I can say is that I'm Never Gonna Know You now, But I'm Gonna Love You Anyhow.

  • This is quite an upbeat-sounding song for lyrics which are really sad. For those unaware, it is about his mother and his abusive stepfather who was the guy telling Elliott he's "no good". He decided to leave Texas and move to Portland (hence "I'm never gonna know you know/But I'm gonna love you anyhow).

Such a great song and probably one of my favourites.

  • @CuriousWhale theres one about his stepdad on his first album, the title track roman candle. the lyric is that he hates him so much it burns like a roman candle.

  • fav Elliot song..always

  • I love how Elliott Smith never really seemed to be trying hard to come up with music, he never tells any grandeur tales of sudden inspiration or buckling down hard to sum up a movie in a song.

He just seemed to write and play, another amazing talent gone.

But he left some of the 175 best songs I can think of.

  • best song ever.... dsnt make sends now he died -_- and why R.I.P Elliott Smith

  • It kills me on the inside to know such beauty, and have it, almost poetically, end itself. It just goes to show that even when things are gone, people still don't recognize the absolute musical behemoth that was lost that day. Until we meet, Mr. Smith.

  • this guy is a musical heavy weight, a big fucking deal, and nobody knows who the hell he is... :(

  • great cover of this from my son....channel name is primussux...lots of other great stuff too...covers and originals thanx:)

  • I'm tired..

  • Real poets always try to find the ultimate. Thats why they start doing drugs and why they kill themselves when they dont find what theyre looking for. RIP Elliott Smith, you were a genius..

  • @MusicFromBelgium nobody as intelligent as Elliot would think for a second that he could possibly understand the ultimatum, the reason for being, whatever you want to call it. nobody does drugs because they're "looking for something", people do drugs because they feel good. the biggest insult you can give an artist is making them out to be something more than they were. he was a person, and he wrote soulful songs for other people, nothing more, nothing less.

  • @mtcw2790 that's a general statement. You can speak for yourself, but don't be hypocritical by trying to speak for the world at large. I personally did drugs to explore my consciousness. Not trying to find the ultimate reason or anything, but I had other reasons than to "just feel good". I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

  • @Xiouslaidyn drugs create a false consciousness.

  • @mtcw2790 and now i know that you're a moron. Thanks for clarifying that.

  • @Xiouslaidyn oh damn, somebody on youtube thinks i'm a moron, i think i'm gonna cry.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @Xiouslaidyn explore your consciousness? shrooms and acid maybe. but heroin? i can't see anybody using that to figure themselves out or anything like that. i mean the only reason i ever used heroin was to make myself feel good, physically and mentally. still at large youre way closer to a point than the other dude

  • @thestudlybudly yeah I never did heroin, but i stand corrected nonetheless!

  • @mtcw2790 uh. the thing people look for in a drug IS to feel good

  • @thestudlybudly thats what i said

  • I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow. What a great soul he was. XO

  • rest in paradise

a beautiful song from a beautiful man. See you at the great concert in the sky.

  • HES SO AMAZING. I LOoooO000ooOVE him! ooohhhhmmmyyyygggaawwwssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • He's just awesome!

  • i just visited the wall and it is totally gratified and it is very sad

  • @momovomo Oh god I know, what's the point of vandalizing that?

  • I think he still alive in our mind and heart.

  • Why Elliot?

  • Left us too early.

  • friends! have no worry i am back from drying! Gonna write some new tunes soon i promise

    peace out, elliott~

  • i enjoy this song

  • Probably the greatest american singer/songwriter/musician that most people havent even heard.

  • A man who was supposedly so uncomfortable connecting to humanity was able to impact more people than any ordinary person could ever hope to reach. Is there a better example of irony? He never tried too hard, and that made all the difference. We don’t see many like him, and I believe that’s actually a good thing, because it wouldn’t be as special.

  • @djcarro

One of few modest geniuses. Among the group, Cobain, Hendrix, and Staley. None expected the spotlight, or fully understood the attention. Simply too good for this world. Taken for granted.

    All died mysteriously.

God died and the universe chose those 4 to combine and become the ultimate eternal being of passion, prosperity and peace.

  • Yep. This is the greatest song of all time. No doubt.

  • this song represents my feeling abaut elliott, when he says"never gonna know you now but im gonna love you anyhow" thats how i feel about elliott

  • 6 people simply suck.

  • please do say a prayer for a lost soul who had so much talent.

... never to be relized in this world

  • tell mr man with impossible plans to leave me alone, in the place where i make no mistakes, in the place where i have what it takes. someone tell him.

  • Oh! after my daughter turned me on [she's 19] I turned my 35 year old heavy metal/ acid rocker sonon to him as well...so from classic rocker to indie and then to metal...Elliott Smith crosses all musical tastes...wow!!!

  • My daughter turned me on to this amazing artist a couple years ago and at 54 years, I can't stop playing his music. Sooo Good...I only wish he knew what all his fans know, that his music was loved and so was he...the love lives on...

  • When does hutch mention Elliot Smith??

  • never understood more or appreciated this more then when i was all doped up...thank you elliott for giving us soul-less, sad parasites something to believe in

  • @redneckenjoi fuck off

  • 'love you anyhow' ... exactly how i feel :/

  • who the fuck is hutch?

  • @antonburlin its TheiMightyHutch. lol

  • oh hutchy poo

  • i loved this song years ago when i was young and never got into elliot smith.. kinda bummed i didnt. oh and hutch

  • You just got Hutched, son.

  • Hutch <3

  • I want to hug him :(

  • This song is my new Favorite from Elliott. i only listen to a few new songs at a time because i'm trying to hold off the day when i'll have heard everything by him. that will be a very, very sad day for me. So even though hes my favorite artist, i'm only taking in a few new songs at a time cuz once i've heard them all, i'll have really heard them all-no more new music from this completely amazing & troubled soul. I miss you El, <3

  • Im going to go play this one now.

  • This song makes me hate his parents lol.

  • I'm gonna name my kids

Lucas (I dunno.. I like the name)

    Kurt (Kurt Vonnegut and Cobain)

    Elliott (Elliott Smith)

they shall be the coolest kids in town.

  • that last part of the song applies because he's gone.. so sad :(

  • it's ok, it's all right , nothing wrong...

  • it's ok, it's all right , nothing wrong ....

  • Im naming my kid after Elliott.

  • @legolas3214 make his middle name Steve cause that's that's Elliots birth name or ":real name"

  • "She appears composed, so she is, I suppose. Who can really tell?"

Elliott had talent that no one else could match. He combined hauntingly beautiful melodies with lyrics that were pure poetry. This song is perfect. Rest In Peace, Elliott Smith.

  • i love this video, thank you so much for making it, i watch it every day!!!

  • best fucking song ever...love the video too. makes me cry every time i watch it...

  • The expression "rip the eyes out of a song birds head and he will sing more beautifully" seems to fit with this guy's music.

  • to anyone who does not recognize Elliott Smith's genius: this song (and several other Smith songs) dramatically changes beginning at the 2:57 point, which is exactly the 'Phi point' of the song, the Golden Ratio known since the time of the Ancient Greeks. I believe 'Ballad of Big Nothing' and other Elliott Smith songs also utilize this ratio. Elliott Smith was positively brilliant and esoteric.

  • @danielvlee What are you talking about?

    287 = total sum

    177 = larger section.

    110 = smaller section.

    287/177 = 1.621468926553672

    177/110 = 1.609090909090909

    1.609090909090909 ≠ 1.621468926553672

This song doesen't fit the golden ratio, you suck at maths. Frankly I'm disgusted that you got a top comment, just shows how stupid people are that they don't even check the maths behind your claim before blindly liking it.

  • @wormsto I'd be interested in discussing the "maths" behind a comment I made a year ago, if your reply were not so disproportionately angry, given the context of an appreciation of a video on youtube. I brainstormed "what would make someone react like you did", so seemingly overreactive, and all I could think of was: you must be 17 years old. Sure enough, I clicked your profile... By next year you will understand why your comment is inappropriately worded. Enjoy the Elliott videos!

  • his best song.

  • Yeah! it was! he wouldnt do something like that

  • I've got to disagree. I love Elliott and obviously didn't know him personally, but from his music I don't find it hard to believe that he committed suicide.

  • listen more than all of his song have little bits of light in them contrasting the darkness

  • his tattoo of ferdinand the bull is so endearing!

  • are you sure? i thought it was the 22nd? anyways i think it was suicide, but who nos right?

  • God I miss Elliott Smith. Thank you for this video. My favourite song of his.

  • great video. thanks.

  • 'i think it was murder' based on what? people occasionally manage to shoot themselves twice in the head, two stab wounds to the chest could be self-inflcted. besides why would his gf kill him, what motive?

  • my bro says that he dosent know what happened and we wont know till we meet our maker what happened.

if u listen to kings crossing at about the 4:00 minute mark he says "give me one good reason why i shouldn't do it" and you hear his girlfriend say "because i love you so much" she recorded over it after he died but im not sayin he killed himself or his girlfriend did it though

  • See, we wont know, so does it really matter what reason people give themselves?

  • That's the original recording, actually.

  • @zoskiaist If any of these people new what heroin addiction is like they would have no trouble understanding why people take them self's out. Same with Kurt, I don't think there was a Junkie in the world that wondered if he did it. And as for Elliott, do these people think he had an aversion to sticking himself with pointing metal objects. No disrespect, I just saying their is a mindset and he probably went to the task in the same way he would go to find a vein.

  • Love this song

    Why is he dead?:(

  • 1st song of his I've heard and fallen in love with his music. such a pity he's no longer around:( such a talent:( the pics r very nice:) and the song's awesome:) he couldn't have killed himself... that's my point of view... just like Kurt Cobain but it's a defferent story.

  • this movie makes me so mad that he's dead! I wish he was still around...such a magnificent talent who is sorely missed.

  • @jayarownd "The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on not all your piety nor wit can bring it back to cancel half a line nor all your tears wash out a word of it."

It will be the same with every transcendent work, every moment of connection that comes to pass will pass on. No matter how strong, how immortal and known and celebrated it will be lost. Death touches everything of human construction. We have to remember that.

  • oh well I hope he didn't kill himself and I'd like to kill the guy who killed him if it was murder

  • this is the song that got me hooked on elliot. thanks for posting this. there are pictures on here that i've never seen before. so are there any speculations on his death? everyone i talk to says that no-one knows. it's just so sad to see a person of so much talent leave this world. we all miss you Elliott

  • At age 34, he died from two stab wounds to the chest. The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether the wounds were self-inflicted. so thats realy sad because they don't know if he killed himself or if it was murder, he had depresion, drug addiction, and alcohalism problems so I wouldn't be suprised if he did kill himself.

  • just listen to "basement on a hill"

thats all the evidence you need.

wish i went to one of his shows before he left though. . .

  • I love this song I heard it last week at a summer camp and have been listening to it constantly sence

  • YOU SUCK!!!

    hows your summa' vacation going!?

  • I love this song and Elliott!

  • oh my gosh. i love this song. some of these pics i have never seen before. Thanks so much for posting!!

    Rest in Peace, Elliott<3
