I always think that Haydn is better than Mozart... in some aspects. I prefer the music by Haydn because I dislike opera and do not appreciate the excessive exhibitionism of most mozartian concertos. To sum up: Mozart is better in those genres that I most despise (opera) or less understand (concertant works).
It is exclusively a disccussion on personal preferences.
Yes, I was engaged by Haydn in 1996 when I was 16. In those days I recorded a couple of symphonies in a cassette (Feuer and Maria Theresia). I had known Beethoven and Bach before, but that discovery was a shock: such a degree of craftmanship, of self-contained power, of utter witteness...
