I remember my grandma playing this song on a crank - up record player as we had no power on the farm. She had several of Hanks albums . Everyone would quietly sit round and listen intently...that was family love back then, something lost years ago!!
Talk about a song that would bring a tear to a glass eye, (especially if you're a combat veteran)this one has to be right up there with Old Shep and Red Foley's "Steal Away". Hank's song "The Runt" is another great narration. We'll never see the likes of this talented man again. RIP Singin' Ranger.
One of the band was called Kayton(?) Roberts, it was either the fiddle or the steel guitar he played. I'm trying to picture an old Grand Ole Opry video that I have somewhere from when STV showed the Opry here in Scotland for a brief period about 15 or so years ago.
Wow... this is ONE of my Fav songs ever, and my FAV one by Hank, My mom loved him and I used to listen to this over and over again when I was a kid, I am now 44 WOW... brings back wonderful memories of my mother and me playing music while we cleaned house or what not... thank you YouTube... I have NOT heard this in YEARS... aw... tears...
I also saw this track on this week's edition of the Porter Wagoner Show on Rural. Absolutely fantastic. Song's like this, and the tradgedie's are Hank Snow's forte. Nobody performs these better.
I agree with you cashpresley. As far as the great Johnny Cash is concerned, I would rate only Hank Snow and Tex Ritter on the same level. Johnny Cash's "Mean As Hell" on the "Ballads of the True West" album is absolute magic.
Hi oldmusiclover, unfortunately I don't have any way of copying it. It's an old albumn called "Country Giants" (1971) CDS 1098. It has various artists on including Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins, Eddy Arnold and Skeeter Davis. You may still be able to pick that one up, HTH's? If I find a way to copy it I'll let you know.

I just saw Hank Snow perform this great monologue on the Porter Waggoner Show on Rural TV. No one can deliver this sort of song like Hank Snow.

Kenrew,
No one but no one can beat Hank Snow at
narration.
I first heard this nearly 50 years ago
and it sounds as good now as it did then.
Magic!

I think Johnny Cash is very good in narration, and I don't think anybody could beat him.
