The problem in the US is that Ute is also the name of a tribe of Native Americans. We Americans are way too obsessed with being politically correct. There's been a recent movement to have sports teams change their names from Native American related names to something else. It's funny because we try not to offend anyone, but end up doing it anyway. It's really dumb. 

And the way Yankee is used most commonly is a southern American making fun of a northern one. Hope this helps answer your ?.
