WOW! Such memories. This was a fantastic movie; haven't seen it in about three/ four years. I'm ordering it from Netflix and, now that I've seen this music video, can't wait to watch it! I remember REALLY liking the movie when I saw it for the first time. Also, this song is the very first song that got me interested in Japanese music! Feels funny to hear it after so many years. Now I like all kinds of Japanese music; Oku Hanako, School Food Punishment and Asian Kung Fu Generation to name a few!

i think it was that the aunt is her from the future taking care of the painter, and guiding her younger self. There is a lot of evidence of it, since she had done it once too, and said it was bad timing with a boy she met.

@Marsion444 Wait a sec, nowhere in the film can she exist as two selves. If her aunt is the "older" her she should be unable to see herself anyway because in this film overlap of existence is impossible. Every time someone leapt onlookers noticed a lapse when they go in/out of a particular t-stream. Also, how is Chiaki of the future 17 and Makoto of the future 20+? Also, if they can both time travel, why not just meet up? It's just too nonsensical to be conclusive. The viewer is left to decide.

@Fiskarrr The aunt-theory is very interesting, but the reason why they can't meet up, is because they only had a certain amount of charges left. He used her last charge to save someone else, and then she mysteriously got one more charge and used it to help him get back to his own time. Basically, when they say that 'they'll meet again', the chances are slim to none that they ever will. That's the sad part about it all.

@ThePaprikacat It is not *definite* they will never meet again but quite unlikely. Chiaki said his "era" is different, and an era is really long fucking time. She would be dead way before Chiaki's grandparents would even be born. Not only that, if there was a disaster in his time she could have been killed in that disaster. LOL DOOM AND GLOOM. The only hope is he gets another time walnut thingy from his era (never said he couldn't get another one...) and jumps back to visit her :D

Bah, the ending was weird on purpose so that the viewer would decide the possibility/impossibility of a reunion. Something interesting is that Aunt says they just found the painting and that it was done during a period of great war. Chiaki says that the painting surfaces ONLY in Makoto's time. This is where a mess is made, if you think about the time-relation between Kazuko, Chiaki, Makoto, the painting and the consequences of their meetings it all begins to make less and less sense....D:

When chiaki was gone and immediately came back maybe he grabbed one of those nuts, and when he leaned down to makoto coz the camera was just focusing on their heads maybe he gave one of it to makoto? that's why she was happy? and at the last part when the time belt were still tickin that was (I think) proof of makoto STILL time travelling.

@itoumakoto1980 The whole movie is basically about Makoto's growth. Makoto goes from a girl without a care in the world, to a girl who knows that her actions today impact others in the future. So she'll now live her life to the fullest. She knows that the best way to change her future isn't to do time leaps, but to live her life to the fullest today. And the parting with Chiaki isn't sad- it's beautiful. She now has more of a reason to live her life to the fullest- somebody's waiting for her.

Does anyone suspect Auntie Witch might just be the future Makoto leaping back to this time period?

My reasons:

1. In her last jump, Makoto went back to the point where she was already on the lab floor. By that time, the time leaps were already transferred and she should have gained all those time leaps back.

2. At the end, she decided what she wanted to do with her future: to preserve the painting. Chiaki already said this time period is the only time the painting's whereabout is known.
