in later epochs of ancient hoplitodromos they used smaller light shields like "peltas" seen on many amphoras and without thorax-armour.This shield has an effektive 1mm steel-thickness against pointed weapon-penetration like an authentic 1mm bronze thorax-armour. @remigius1974 that is true but they were not hoplites they were peltastes,thureoforoi,ekdromoi­,phalagites and so on the original hoplite in some eras droped his thorax but never droped his hoplon shield

@remigius1974 i have read the original anabasis in ancient greek and trust me the translation always is worse, i belong to a reenactement group in macedonia so i have come in contact with hoplite and phalanx armor, aspis and so on......
