very odd debate. I've been a manga fan very long time ago, fist of the north star, Akira and Ghost in the Shell days. It's just that now it seems to overwhelming much like how modern comic book continuity bothers a lot of new comic book readers. When a friend advises me "You should check out Naruto anime, but the Manga is the way to go." That's over 150 episodes or 40 volumes to watch and read.
It's hard to really debate about this. Might as well through in Euro comics while your at it.
leinl yu's art has never looked so good. looks like he finally learned how to use an eraser after pencilling the crap out of his pages!
i liked the book, it's got potential, but bendis' weird combination of verbose characters who all use his voice (foul language and all) and his serious love of decompression (haven't all the issues of new avengers since the skrull reveal been basically the same?) worry me slightly.
Mainstream fans and manga fans are pretty much the same. I'm a fan of both mainstream and manga, and seeing people around me, it look as if the manga fans and mainstream fans are both narrow minded. So I don't really agree.
Once again, Alex, I'm forced to question your sanity. HOW could you think the art in Secret Invasion was good!!??? The artwork blows!!!! Leinil Yu is a total hack!
What? Yeah, let's all have the same style of cartoony art that makes you feel like it's secretly geared towards eight year olds. that's my only beef with the genre as a whole. the place i'm forced to get comics is really more of an anime/manga place and those guys are always so condescending. yeah, i know there's some good stuff to be read in manga, but i hate getting crap trying to get an issue of new avengers. i thought pete was finally going to snap this time. mike mine marvel.
i think manga fans are more narrow minded because theyd never read mainstream stuff. they tend o be really stuck up about they're precious japanese imports and they're super cool ability to read backwards, what a life skill.
As a fan of both comics and manga I think both Pete and Alex have fair points. While there are many indie comics that have a wide range of genres and ideas (Maus, Y-the last man, fables etc) for the most part mainstream is mainly superheroes. manga however does suffer from the same thing though. you can get several titles which are all very similar (high school based manga, mecha manga etc). in the end though it ultimately depends on the reader.
Genaralising, I totally agree with Alex. One could say the polarisation among quite a section of mainstream fans between Marvel and DC illsutrates his point effectively. There's a lot of Marvelites that irrationally hate Superman... a comic form of penis envy perhaps
However, I don't really do generalisations, so I kinda disagree. I'm a fan of both Manga and the mainstream. There is far more diversity within Manga but I think that down to cultural differences.
as a marvelite i have to say i hate superman but with reason. the guy can do too many things and has a cheesy do gooder personality and his only weakness is kryptonite. but i do hate a lot of marvel characters for similar reasons e.g cyclops is a big ol' nothing to me.
i felt the diversity that alex was talkng about was flawed because both iron wok and hikaru followed the same basic formula.
check out "even a monkey can draw manga", funny but so true.
Alex is way off here. The Comic is a very diverse form that spreads far beyond the mainline superhero genre. Fables and Y the Last Man are just a couple examples. Even within the flight, fight, and tights genre you have a very broad spectrum. I do think there is a lot of unnecessary dumbing down and preachiness in today's superhero books, though. But that is generally true in American pop culture.
I personally think that manga fans aren't particularly "better" per say, because I myself am not a big fan of manga, but I really do like indy comics that trail off of the beaten path. I would LOVE to read a silly, comic about cooking or about like, checkers or something!
I think I'm just about as open minded as any other person when comes to the content of my comics, I just don't find myself liking the overall 'manga style'.
I agree with Alex--it's true there's (some) diversity IN American comics, but it's not what sells. What sells is Secret Invasion, Final Crisis, X-Men, Avengers--all the same stuff, basically. When talking about preference it's not about what's out there, it's about what people pick up. And the vast majority of comic readers refuse to look at non-superhero stuff, and brand it "crap". It's playing to THIS audience that's going to cause the next crisis in the industry.
saying people who dont like manga are close minded, is in itself very close minded. its like saying people who dont like mushrooms are cannibals. in the words of johnnie cochran "THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!"
i like what i like. but im open to other stuff. id i dont like it then i dont like it.
i like mushrooms by the way. they are lovely with steak.
i dont read manga. not my bag at all. and i dont think its narrow minded to not care about a comic about cooking or a board game. if i want to read cooking ill pick up a gordon ramsey book. if i wanna watch somthing about a board game ill pick up jumangi( plus i get robin willams in the package to boot!)
but i think its very unfair to say that "mainstream" (id prefer to say western) fans are close minded.its a cultural thing. its what turns our crank.
I sort of agree, I read both comics and manga. When it comes to comics I only read specific Marvel titles like Avengers and X-Men and only to some degree, other stuff like The Walking Dead.
On the other hand, when it comes to manga I read pretty much everything.
Yeah Stack guys I think all of you woill Like Berserk lots of bloody killing but great storyline on how he became that way and hunting things down. And another Manga MONSTER about a Japanese doctor in Germany whose framed for Murder and takes him 10 years of running from the police to figure out who the killer is. Check those two out very badly!
Pete you might like Berserk. Imagine if Wolverine had one arm, and one eye and no super powers. And its also set in medieval times. Also killing. Lots and lots of killing. Like Max Punisher levels.
I read both. Every art form that tells a story can be enjoyed one way or another, why do we need to compare Manga and Comics? They're different and thats what make them both great.
U got a point there. That even explains the thoery that Alex came up with. Is not that manga fans are better, is just that they are different. It is true that they are more open minded, but the fact that main stream fans are so fierce about there stuff is good as well, don't u appreciate people who is true to their standards?
I like mainstream but I really cant get into those comics and for like the second time ever I agree with Pete and disagree with Pete all the way. Hes made some good points but still mainstream IS kinda gogin down the crapper. But that cuz with the movies and people wanna get new fans and this and that but Im still open minded bout comics and Im sure alotta people with my taste are.
Manga stories may be more varied in their subject matter, but in my experience it pretty rarely goes past the 'this is fun, interesting and different' factor to hit any emotional notes. Also, all manga artwork looks the freakin' same. What's so original about THAT!?!?? HUH!?
"...the beauty of a single issue" The problem with that statement Pete, is that the beauty is ruined by advertisers dumping their rubbish on every second or third page. With trades you don't get that. Advertisements in comics is the equivalent of someone defacing a painting....there is nothing beautiful about that.
The big things that ruins comics for Americans is the bloody industry itself with the whole direct market shenanigans. Most comic shops sell only the really popular crap
I'm kinda with Alex on the whole fan thing. Manga tells stories about a variety of things, and not many of us here in the states find interest in reading about it. We like what we have. And frankly, I'm okay with that.
And as far as Secret Invasion goes, I'm with Pete. The first issue delivered what it promised and set up for a great event. Now let's see if the rest of this story follows suit. And the artwork? I loved Yu's art in New Avengers, but with SI he blew my mind. Nicely done.
Comics and Manga are two different forms of art. It's why so many Comic-to-movies suck; they try to pack too much stuff into it that really don't belong in comics. Calling one better than the other IS stupid.
I agree a little with each of you: Comics are going towards manga style, but it is ruining the genre. Writing for the trade is ruining the individual comics. Sales are dropping for that reason.
I half agree with the panel discussion. Manga fans are open to more ideas, BUT manga fans are actually very closed towards comics themselves. If some comics began running their books in the same size as mangas, maybe it could fool them?
I disagree. At 16 i was reading chobits, dragonball and akira, now im 23 and my tastes have grown greatly. I'm a big garth ennis, warren ellis and alan moore fan, also enjoying the likes of fables, dmz, invisible and walking dead. I still collect manga but I indefinably spend more on comics.
Comics would have a better chance of picking up manga fans if the average comic wasnt about super heros or fucking fanboy bullshit like fucking xena vs fucking army of fucking darkness.
Well there are always those who break these rules. I myself read Manga and have a good amount of books. And I admit that comics are hard to get into unless you read them from issue #1. But there are always very cool series that start up. One of my friends first picked up Civil War and that got him into comics.
YES WE ARE!!!! Alex I love you! You understand the manga fan! In fact, I probably wouldn't even be reading American comics id it weren't for you guys! But how would anyone else now that there are other comics? At least for manga you know there's variety. It's appreciated and collected over there as well, Alex just meant on a populous view, because unlike her almost everyone in Japan reads manga. Yes Pete, that's what he's saying. Not all the women, they hardly even have boobs in Korean manga
Pete is 100% correct on the manga issue. As a reformed manga reader i can't pick up any manga without seeing the same characters rehashed but with a different hair style. Expanding on what pete said about women
being portrayed as big breasted fools, i should say that almost any female in manga will fall into one of 3 catagories.
Big breasted love interest, wrinkly old hag that performs the guide/teacher function and is suprisingly touch, and the jailbait lolicon character for the obvious purpose of giving
that certain demographic of japanese readers their fix. Also, you will hardly ever see a hero character that is over 15 years old. Fact. What is also a fact is that
Berserk Rocks. Read it Now.Yes Pete i'm talking to you.
I am both an avid reader of manga and comic, love them both for different reasons. In my experience manga fans are more narrow and critical of comic fans. Most of my comic lover friends read manga or at least know about it, my manga lover friends mock American superheroes and comic art.
WOO! MANGA! MY FIRST LOVE! Oh! I just pick up Fairytail, this is great! Hmm, interesting review on that, maybe you should check out the creators previous series Rave Master, and see if it's just he type of writing. I've been a fan of Hikaru for a while now, it just has the power to hook you. The go pices always make me hungry. Please tell you guys don't think geisha's are like prostitutes. They're not, just to let you know
I side with Alex on this one too! Manga fans are usually far more open minded to different styles and approaches to storytelling. And Justin was right in that Pete represents what Alex was talking about, Comic fans tend to be narrow minded and little to overzealous about their opinions and when it comes to change. Where as Manga fans are the total opposite.
He's got SOMEWHAT of a point...I don't think the majority of comic book fans (westerners) are close-minded or whatever, but there is a demographic who are very superficial to the point that they only read the books for the action scenes or whatever. Like, I don't think huge fans of Watchmen and Sandman fall under the aforementioned category...
I use to be like, but then I found this show and decided to give it a try. Manga still my first love, but American comics aren't as bad as I thought. The biggest thing is adjusting to the way the story's told. The way mainstream comics companies do 'em, they seem so ridged. And most of my friends do like stuff like amerimanga and goth-comics, but no the super-hero stuff, what's that tell ya?
I actually read both Manga and conventional comics and find alot of interesting aspects from both.I like alot of series in Manga and hopefully don't see myself as narrow-minded.Although watching Pete I can see the narrow-mindedness that is spoken about when it comes to regular comics and manga..lmao.He also said manga is done in pamphlet but hello there was ASHCANS for alot of comics so his counterpoint is null on that aspect.
I agree with Alex, I like manga because to me it has more re-read value than american comics. I can read a volume of a manga 1,000 times and not get bored with it. With american comics, I just read it and put it back on the shelf.
@Jeffrywith1e: Weekly Comic Book Club show, every Tuesday at 8pm in NYC, special guests join us to chat live about books. I probably can't post a link here, so do a google search for "comic book club," and it's the first thing that comes up!
I imagine (and hope) Alex was being deliberately provocative. If fans are narrow minded, its only because the genre has a narrow scope and works through intricate continuity which can foster a kind of cult-like attitude towards comics.I agree that more variety and creativity is good, but I'm more on Pete's side when it comes to monthly pamphlet books - reading a good trade is great, but one of the joys of comics is getting stories month-in, month-out.
saying you dont like manga is like saying you dont like any comics at all. Manga is so varied thats there has to be something out there you would like.
saying you dont like manga is like saying you dont like any comics at all. Manga is so varied thats there has to be something out there you would like.
i can't get behind this agruement. what about the mainstream fans that are always out for something different? what about the manga fans that only read hentai?
You liked Iron Wok Jan over Hikaru no Go? Pete, you are the only sane person in a crazy crazy world. Iron Wok Jan was interesting at first, but every volume is the same thing over and over with no character development. Hikaru no Go, however, has tons of character development through the entire series. The character even slowly grows up (even facial structure changes) as the series progresses.
I agree with Alex actually. The thing is, manga is alot ''wider'' than the american ones. There's manga about everything, litteraly, american comics however are more focused. Also, I totally agree with him that comics are not made as collectibles, they are made to be read.
Yeh in regard to the manga thing i think those fans are more open to more far-fetched and original concepts for their books. But in mainstream, it BASICALLY is the villains are the threat, the hero appears down for the count but manages to turn it around and win.
Dont get me wrong i luv mainstream n am not a big fan of manga but wat Alex sez is true.
Yoooo i agree with the manga and comic fan thing man thats real manga fans they are dedicated like for real for real lol they just seem alot more open to things and are in it for unique stories and characters
I agree, especially with Alex on this one. American comic fans are rabid, hardcore, and unbending. Most of them couldnt stomach the thought of reading manga, and that's really unfortunate. I was a manga fan first before I read american comics, and because of that I've been much more accepting of non-typical stories.
Man I love the Fairy Tail manga sometimes more than the show because it seems there is no blood in the show but in the manga there is a fair amount of blood when they do a certain attack...I just don't get why they decided to leave out blood in the show!!! Mainstream fans and manga fans are pretty much the same. I'm a fan of both mainstream and manga, and seeing people around me, it look as if the manga fans and mainstream fans are both narrow minded. So I don't really agree.

Marvel should have gotten jim lee for the secret invasion! that would have made everyone take notice!
I miss his marvel work... "Sigh"
PrometheuzReturns 3 years ago
Ha. They would have needed to get him started back when Secret War came out in order to have 8 issues come out this year.

Once again, Alex, I'm forced to question your sanity. HOW could you think the art in Secret Invasion was good!!??? The artwork blows!!!! Leinil Yu is a total hack!
Dragon92364 3 years ago
@Dragon92364: I never said I thought it was good on the show. I question YOUR sanity, because you're imagining I'm saying things I'm not. Boo-yah!
azalben 3 years ago
What? Yeah, let's all have the same style of cartoony art that makes you feel like it's secretly geared towards eight year olds. that's my only beef with the genre as a whole. the place i'm forced to get comics is really more of an anime/manga place and those guys are always so condescending. yeah, i know there's some good stuff to be read in manga, but i hate getting crap trying to get an issue of new avengers. i thought pete was finally going to snap this time. mike mine marvel.

sorry, but your comment seems a little narrow-minded, too.
cloddiehoppers 3 years ago
As a fan of both comics and manga I think both Pete and Alex have fair points. While there are many indie comics that have a wide range of genres and ideas (Maus, Y-the last man, fables etc) for the most part mainstream is mainly superheroes. manga however does suffer from the same thing though. you can get several titles which are all very similar (high school based manga, mecha manga etc). in the end though it ultimately depends on the reader.
nilergirl109806 3 years ago
Genaralising, I totally agree with Alex. One could say the polarisation among quite a section of mainstream fans between Marvel and DC illsutrates his point effectively. There's a lot of Marvelites that irrationally hate Superman... a comic form of penis envy perhaps
However, I don't really do generalisations, so I kinda disagree. I'm a fan of both Manga and the mainstream. There is far more diversity within Manga but I think that down to cultural differences.
Gadget3440 3 years ago
as a marvelite i have to say i hate superman but with reason. the guy can do too many things and has a cheesy do gooder personality and his only weakness is kryptonite. but i do hate a lot of marvel characters for similar reasons e.g cyclops is a big ol' nothing to me.
i felt the diversity that alex was talkng about was flawed because both iron wok and hikaru followed the same basic formula.
check out "even a monkey can draw manga", funny but so true.
User89620 3 years ago
to say the fans of manga are better than the fans of comics is a blanket statement that doesn't really make any sense at all
slexicDys 3 years ago

I think I'm just about as open minded as any other person when comes to the content of my comics, I just don't find myself liking the overall 'manga style'.

bigheadlittlehead 3 years ago

I'm with Alex, the great majority of comicbook fans have lost their way.
nailin18 3 years ago
i dont read manga. not my bag at all. and i dont think its narrow minded to not care about a comic about cooking or a board game. if i want to read cooking ill pick up a gordon ramsey book. if i wanna watch somthing about a board game ill pick up jumangi( plus i get robin willams in the package to boot!)
but i think its very unfair to say that "mainstream" (id prefer to say western) fans are close minded.its a cultural thing. its what turns our crank.
ohdeasu 3 years ago
I sort of agree, I read both comics and manga. When it comes to comics I only read specific Marvel titles like Avengers and X-Men and only to some degree, other stuff like The Walking Dead.
On the other hand, when it comes to manga I read pretty much everything.

U got a point there. That even explains the thoery that Alex came up with. Is not that manga fans are better, is just that they are different. Manga stories may be more varied in their subject matter, but in my experience it pretty rarely goes past the 'this is fun, interesting and different' factor to hit any emotional notes. Also, all manga artwork looks the freakin' same. What's so original about THAT!?!?? HUH!?
hellointernet 3 years ago
"...the beauty of a single issue" The problem with that statement Pete, is that the beauty is ruined by advertisers dumping their rubbish on every second or third page. With trades you don't get that. Advertisements in comics is the equivalent of someone defacing a painting....there is nothing beautiful about that.

The big things that ruins comics for Americans is the bloody industry itself with the whole direct market shenanigans. Most comic shops sell only the really popular crap
ziffy88 3 years ago
I'm kinda with Alex on the whole fan thing. Manga tells stories about a variety of things, and not many of us here in the states find interest in reading about it. We like what we have. And frankly, I'm okay with that.
And as far as Secret Invasion goes, I'm with Pete. The first issue delivered what it promised and set up for a great event. Now let's see if the rest of this story follows suit. And the artwork? I loved Yu's art in New Avengers, but with SI he blew my mind. Nicely done.
DrumBumNunez 3 years ago
Comics and Manga are two different forms of art. It's why so many Comic-to-movies suck; they try to pack too much stuff into it that really don't belong in comics. Calling one better than the other IS stupid.
I agree a little with each of you: Comics are going towards manga style, but it is ruining the genre. Writing for the trade is ruining the individual comics. Sales are dropping for that reason.
Joemantler 3 years ago
Have skrulls invaded the stack!? noooooo
I half agree with the panel discussion. Manga fans are open to more ideas, BUT manga fans are actually very closed towards comics themselves. If some comics began running their books in the same size as mangas, maybe it could fool them?
chemicaljordan 3 years ago
Comics would have a better chance of picking up manga fans if the average comic wasnt about super heros or fucking fanboy bullshit like fucking xena vs fucking army of fucking darkness.
knoxundead 3 years ago

Vicemary 3 years ago
Pete is 100% correct on the manga issue. As a reformed manga reader i can't pick up any manga without seeing the same characters rehashed but with a different hair style. Expanding on what pete said about women
being portrayed as big breasted fools, i should say that almost any female in manga will fall into one of 3 catagories.
jiidee 3 years ago
Big breasted love interest, wrinkly old hag that performs the guide/teacher function and is suprisingly touch, and the jailbait lolicon character for the obvious purpose of giving
that certain demographic of japanese readers their fix. Also, you will hardly ever see a hero character that is over 15 years old. Fact. What is also a fact is that
Berserk Rocks. Read it Now.Yes Pete i'm talking to you.
Still..it doesn't hold a handle to battlestar.

reasons why I started to stop reading manga,.
ziffy88 3 years ago

They're not, just to let you know
Vicemary 3 years ago
I side with Alex on this one too! Manga fans are usually far more open minded to different styles and approaches to storytelling. And Justin was right in that Pete represents what Alex was talking about, Comic fans tend to be narrow minded and little to overzealous about their opinions and when it comes to change. Where as Manga fans are the total opposite.

Vicemary 3 years ago
He's got SOMEWHAT of a point...I don't think the majority of comic book fans (westerners) are close-minded or whatever, but there is a demographic who are very superficial to the point that they only read the books for the action scenes or whatever. Like, I don't think huge fans of Watchmen and Sandman fall under the aforementioned category...
MarciusWhithood 3 years ago
Manga is great and all, but Manga fans can be just as narrow minded as Comic fans. Everyone I know who reads manga would never read comics.

I agree with Alex, I like manga because to me it has more re-read value than american comics. I can read a volume of a manga 1,000 times and not get bored with it. With american comics, I just read it and put it back on the shelf.

I agree, especially with Alex on this one. American comic fans are rabid, hardcore, and unbending. Most of them couldnt stomach the thought of reading manga, and that's really unfortunate. I was a manga fan first before I read american comics, and because of that I've been much more accepting of non-typical stories.
