  • IF YOU DISLIKE THIS YOU DONT KNOW GOOD MUSIC

  • What I love about this is that you can tell by the facial expressions and body language of the musicians that they are completely in the present moment. You can tell that there exists only the music in their hearts and minds. What a feeling that must be.

  • @man10941 the music and drugs... a lot of drugs.... LOL

  • Shrieve!! those drums.. voodoo(repugnicans get scare...) kiddding it is Black Magic (in a a wonderful sense never mind the whiteys ; -)

  • This is the best shit ever no matter what. Just wow.

  • de otra galaxia

  • ok well the description is wrong because he wasn't peaking from LSD it was some good ol peyote cactus but this song is truly amazing

  • See, it's thanks to music like this that I don't have to listen to Pop.

  • this fan-freaking-tastic.

  • AWESOME, JUST AWESOME. I saw an interview with Carlos years back. He said he had two hits of mescaline in him when he was playing this song. He said he was so jacked, everything was melting together, but it was great.

  • jimi hendrix vs. santana in '69 who better

  • @leonoff89 I think Jimi saw a rock band like Santana w/ the conga players, which also featured a dynamic lead guitarist and as the limits of the rock trio format were becoming painfully obvious to him so he decided to expand his band to realize a more encompassing musical envelope. He would've added a keyboardist, too, as he had the idea to add Steve Winwood who he had previously recorded w/ for his Electric Ladyland album and perhaps he would've had the Woodstock band endured.

  • @leonoff89 No comparason Santana. Everybody has their moments. This was Santana's moment. Get Jimmy did not peek until he hooked up with the band of gypsies

  • Hell yeah, the best drum solo captured on film.

  • santana owns hendrix big time at this gig

hendrix's solos here sounded horribly sloppy here

  • I thought Michael Shrieve was 19 in this. Either he was amazing. You dont see people play like this too often

  • @LionsInThePark he was 19

  • @bamafan3435

    no, 17 years old.

  • Trop fort ! J'veux le même batteur dans mon groupe.

  • Michael Shrieve is one of the most underrated and under mentioned drummers of all time. He's honestly good enough to put in a top 10. Possibly a top 5. And you also have to take in account, he drummer this solo traditional. Not a lot of drummers could pull off that speed and technique traditional. Except maybe drum line drummers. But then again their not playing behind a full kit with cymbals and kick pedals. Seriously talented guy.

  • around 1990 i saw carlos santana, the neville bros. and mason ruffner. it was in a big top circus tent for the jazz fest nite shows. it was the most amazing 3 hours. it was the second of two shows that nite. it went from 12:00 to 3:30. the whole show had the energy of this song

  • does it matter what drugs they were on? they all were tweaking their lil jibblets off on whatever they were taking and managed to put on a hell of good set.unlike watching Brad Nowell(Sublime) so high on smack you cant even make out the words he was saying. as a music lover i have seen bands that were sober that suck and bands who were fucked up they actually put on a decent show.

  • @KOC23LBJ In order to enjoy Carlos, you have to see him live and the smoke will appear natural.

  • wy do i regret being 13 maybe cuz i wasent born at the time i wish i wanted..... long live santana

  • And They were just having a good time .

  • Feels like an acid trip. But better.

  • He gave that woman at least 4 orgasms with his guitar. Amazing

  • CORRUPCION!! En el gobierno de Ollanta Humala, presidente actual de Peru.

  • Awesomeee

  • Mrbabblehead thanks.I thought I was the only person who felt that way. Let the music live on.

  • "Put me down you hippie freak" -- the sheep at 7:45

  • @bailinnumberguy Surprise seks

  • @bailinnumberguy Sheep to bailinnumberguy: " Hey dude,that's no hippy freak...that's my old man !" the sheep @ 7:46

  • Stunning performance, especially in the rhythm section. Woodstock: attendance of approximately 400K. Number of people who claim that they were there: 4 million.

  • such a bad ass band

  • That drummer wasn't high, that's for damn sure. You cant play like that and be trippin He frickin blows my mind. Def one of my all time favorite drum performances. Makes you say, "Who is that guy!!". Electrifying indeed

  • Dear mrbabblehead. Don't take any comments serious. I just tell it like it is. Rolling Stones rated slow hand as one of the ten best guitar players of all time. I think they are high on Acid. for not even thinking of Carlos.

  • @robj1men Not takin it serious brother.....Rolling Stone can shove it up their ass....Carlos has some of the most memorable solos in rock history with "Song of the Wind" and "Europa".....those co called music experts at Rolling Stone mag only influence people who don't play guitar or any instrument for that matter.

  • maybe you should be aiming that comment at robj1men...HE brought up the chicano reference....you high on mescaline or was it lost in translation?

  • Carlos said one time that he was peaking on Acid while they were playing the song. He said he remembered his neck kept turning into a snake. They weren't supposed to go on as early as they did. One of the other acts couldn't get to the site, so they were told "play now, or you don't play".

    This made their careers.

  • Woodstock 2012:

    -Justin Bieber

    -Lady Gaga

    -Rebeca Black

    ... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

  • Tell me what Rock and Roll band wasn't high on DRUGS at wood stock. They only like to pick on the GREAT CARLOS SANTANT BECAUSE HE IS CHICANO. why don't they pick on get high Jimmy Hendrix.

  • @robj1men Most of the posts convey a bit of amazement and admiration for Carlos being able to pull off a performance like that under the influence.....has nothing to do with him being a chicano.

  • @mrbabblehead It has absolutely nothing to do with being a chicano!

In that band we all see every race in there, man!!! Except for asians. lol

    But not knocking them asians!

But they all made this happen!

A "Band" is not about one person. That basist was on fire!

The drummer was out of this world!

The guys playing the other percussion were the needed PUNCH!

And the guy on keyboards was ON IT, BRUH!

I, to this day can only just smile at the crowd totally letting go and riding that vibe!!!

  • I just saw another interview with Santana and he does state that he was on LSD....a year ago I saw another interview where he stated that he was high on mescaline....I don't think Carlos remembers which one he took that night!!

  • Woke the place up they did.

  • The most amazing thing about Santana at woodstock was he was peaking on Acid just as he went on stage....Remember kids, Just say NO!

  • an amazing performance yet you guys are talking about drugs?

  • 天上天下唯我独尊

  • Agarra bien la guitarra, Carlitos... que te muerde la culebra!!!

  • 5:10 ooooooooooohhhhh myyyyyyy goooooooodddnnnneeeeeesssssssssss!

  • Longevity speaks volumes for title of "the best"! B.B.King, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, are all great examples of longevity, and unsurpassed quality. Instead of arguing, just be thanful we HAVE these excellent videos to pass on to others, and to listen to over, and over again!! And as for mesc, or "sid", a good high is still a good high!! ROCK ONNNNN!!

  • he was peaking on mescaline not LSD. either way, still an amazing performance.

  • @NinjaJuggalo9 How would you know what he was on.

  • @jon491

I can reply for NinjaJuggalo here, he's reported many times in different interviews and documentaries and such that he was on mescalin and while playing he was absolutely terrified because he was hallucinating that the neck of his guitar had turned into a snake but continued playing through sheer force of will.

  • @ZeekyB yes you're absolutely right. before he went on the manager or someone like that told him it was now or never and he chose to go on, and he was hoping he was hitting all the right notes, hence all of the weird faces you can see him making, that's was him trying to concentrate on playing but at the same time trying not to be scared of his guitar which turned into a snake while he was playing.

  • @ZeekyB LSD my friend

    watch this /watch?v=ojQMTkAYnqY&feature=related

right at 3:44 "I remember that I was under the influence of LSD"

  • @ontariobuds i'm not gonna say you're wrong or anything because he obviously says he was on LSD but i've done LSD multiple times and it doesn't make you see things like that. it brings on nothing but pure happiness and you're in an ultimate state of nirvana. i believe myself that he took mescaline before his performance because mescaline is known to bring on mass hallucinations. but that's just my opinion.

  • @yeah, I'm sure that he has said both, I only know of the one so I tell people LSD, until I hear him say mescaline. then i won't know what to say except he was on a hallucinogen. do you have any links to an interview where he menions mescaline?

    peace my friend!

  • @NinjaJuggalo9 I forgot to add, LSD is better at producing mass hallucinations, not mescaline. mescaline mostly chan changes how you see the room and stuff, rarly does it produce things that aren't there, like LSD does.I've done both but I cannot say buy his description that is was either because everybody experiences the effects differently. but like I said, Carlos said it was LSD so it is kind of strange to say no, he was on mescaline I know because I've done LSD. have you done mesc? it's fun

  • @ontariobuds Actually, LSD doesn't cause full on seeing things that aren't there unless you take an abnormally high dose. I've done it around 13 times and I never, not once, saw something that was not actually there. All LSD does to vision is it makes things a little brighter, and things kind of move in "waves", similar to your description of mescaline. If you've done LSD, I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about. Those are not hallucinations at all.

  • @seemawng Well, I don't know where you got yours, but the stuff that was rolling around in the late 60's and early 70's caused PLENTY of hallucinations.

Every hear of the expression "tracks"? The key to it was that you knew they weren't real. But there were hallucinations, believe me.

  • @bashfulbrother I haven't touched a drug in over 30 years, thank goodness. I don't endorse it. I still have side effects from the drugs I used, and I am dead serious when I say that your life will be better w/o the experience.

  • @ZeekyB i thot he said that his guitar had felt like an electric eel which is why he made those faces.

  • @dukeaddict237 Both of you are wrong, he is just getting orgasms from his badass music.

  • @jon491 I think he would know because thats what Carlos said he ate.

  • I love people who rate them. Who is the best guitar player of all time. That's a no brainer! SANTANA SANTANA SANTANT.

  • BRAVO BRAVO

  • Oh great, another video from Woodstock. Yawn. Really people, I'm 49 and I'm bored with this stuff, but I guess that's a reflection on how awesome music is today. Opinions are like a-holes, everybody has one and I prefer Carlos now instead of the drugged up late 60's. I realize I'm one of the a-holes to which I refer. No need to even comment. I get it.

  • @selbeeps If you are bored then why are listening? At least you re honest though. You are an A-hole.

  • Musicianship. When a good portion of your band is tripping off LSD and it still sounds this good.

  • @omga14 mescaline!!..not lsd...get it right!!

  • This is legendary...why? ACID this is the answer..

  • @yooNoName Acid is very different from the original LSD. The same level of difference between Mushrooms and Acid. Here's a fun fact: The concept of the DNA sequence was conceptualized during and LSD trip.

  • Did anyone else notice the sheep on the left at 7:44?

  • the drummers name is ansley dunbar

  • Mars Volta love these guys.

  • now you know what groove is

  • @RanetkiFan Kaki King ftw

  • haha young Carlos Santana. xD

  • Orgasmic !!!

  • the instruments are extensions of their own bodies....that is a fact in this performance....

  • @nmcirillo93 ur wrong, mike just turned 20 at this performance... I knew... He is my dad...

  • @soulfinger81 thats realy your pop? hahahaha lucky mofucka hahahaha

  • Por Favor Chorando

  • orgullosamente hecho en mexico para el mundo santana, una de las mejores rolas tocadas en woodstock j

  • He was 17 years old, not 20.

  • 20 yrs old not be boy.

  • 20 yr old is not a boy.

  • Umm. 20 years old is not a boy.

  • @ShadenGheist Depends who you ask. A really old parson might see him as just a boy.

  • Unfortunately I think I missed them at Woodstock. (Yeah, I'm not even sure what bands I actually saw, or just heard, or whatever...!)

  • I saw them in Boston before Woodstock, and they did this song in a relatively little venue, not much bigger than a cellar, the "new" Boston Tea Party, and it blew everyone's minds as you can imagine. I fell in love with Michael. They were the back up band for Joe Cocker. He was pissed that they took more applause than he did, and didn't want to come on for his second set. (Each band would do two sets back then.)

  • Carlos Santana : the reason why i was making those funny faces were because the neck of the guitar was like a snake trying to run away, and i was trying to make it stay still so that i could play the notes

  • @justcour1 No.

  • Peyote is what Carlos was tripping on, he took it thinking they were going to play much later than they actually did and was tripping big time.

  • Man, this incarnation of Santana should reunite and do the Super Bowl half-time show, assuming that most of the members are still alive and physically able to perform, not some stupid Madonna or Bon Jovi, Jonas Brothers crap

  • peace, love and lsd

  • I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH MIKE --- AND HE WAS A DORK WHEN WE KNEW HIM

  • I get the greatest sense of nostalgia from listening to Santana :)

  • Mescaline, not LSD.

  • @justplainjoe both brother

  • @TripWorks01 Wow, I hadnt heard about the Lsd. That would certainly be one very interesting day.

  • speechless. sick drum solo!

  • Never saw the full drum solo till now! HOLY COW CAN THAT MAN DRUM!

  • i love that spaced out blond chick. I guess she dropped the same acid he did!

  • how can you not get up and dance! impossible.

  • I bet he got laid that day!

  • @GDhaenens If 'drugs' would not be the synonym for Woodstock, 'laid' would be..

  • @GDhaenens probely at least 3 times

  • @GDhaenens I'm pretty sure everyone got laid that day . .

  • @sgtmcguckin16 For the sheep's sake, I'm hoping the dude at around 7:40 DIDN'T get laid that day...

  • @GDhaenens They were on LSD...they didn`t give a shit about getting laid

  • @GDhaenens if he didn't get laid, the world is unjust!

  • @GDhaenens with the bass player, probally.

  • Wow!

  • The first time I listened to this song I actually cried because it is so beautiful.

  • no olviden al percusionista de nicaragua jose chepito areas el de rojo con las congas ojo he en nicaragua se producen bueneas cosas si no preguntenle a mick jagger que se caso con bianca jagger de nicaragua.

  • I just watched this video for the first time in 15yrs, and it still is, to me one of the best rock performances i have ever seen. I work with these young jerk offs all day who jam thier techno horseshit and they haven't got a clue about what real music is. I was recently at a dart tournament and asked them to put this video on during a break, the entire bar froze just to watch mike on drums.

  • UUffffff,Michael Shrive, impresionante,Greg Rolie en el Hammond B3.David Brown en el bajo todo impresionante.

  • carlos got that chick pregnant with his music at 5:51

  • he was on MESCALINE NOT LSD!!!!!

  • he was high on lsd, saw an interview

  • :42 Negro drops bass!!!!!

  • The drummer was pretty good for back in the day. But the song in general was just a bunch of drug induced noise.

  • @MrVaiman You say that like its a bad thing!

  • @MrVaiman Drummer, pretty good for back in the day ? Drug induced noise? You are just full of compliments , arent you.

  • I was in High School in 1969. I was at woodstock 1969. My generation, the baby boomers, kicked the shit out of the music of today. Music today sucks many kelvin degrees below zero. My generation produced the greatest Rock N' Roll of all time!

  • @theundercoveratheist There is some incredible music today if you know where to look.

But you're right, rock n' roll back then was fucking fantastic. A lot of today's mainstream rock is utterly terrible.

  • ah mescaline ... the good ol days 8) simply the best Santana EVER

  • obviously is Mexican

  • Fabulous rock and roll, but Santana got better as he got older. This by no means his best work. He just got wider and deeper.

  • @BarerMender not his best work?? he was peaking on mescaline while playing this. Thats why his face is tensing up, hes trying his hardest to keep his shit together

  • It was mescaline, he thought his guitar was a viper. "I was scared to let it go."

  • Comment removed

  • You could be the right hand of the Almighty himself and still not get anywhere without a drummer like this....

  • the drummer is on a drug who gives him the ability to be a champion, to dig the rhythm at the highest point...

  • Who doesn't love the chick thats dancing?

  • @addthis069 me. i find it incredibly distracting

  • @addthis069 If your talking about the dark haired chick with the striped shirt, that's my friend Rozz. I'm sitting right behind her. ;~)>

  • that's what I've been looking for! spot on!

  • respect

  • this tune made me buy a drum. eargams

  • 40 yrs later and still incredible! what energy

  • Hom many musical orgasams can you count in this vid?

  • it was actually mecaline not lsd

  • Michael was another Joe Morello: He could solo and STILL keep the lick pumping. Few are that tasty!

  • I used to drive by woodstock every couple days on my bike. lived 5 minutes away

  • Yes!

  • I liked "evil ways" more.

  • everyone is cool....but keybord player!...NICE ! :)

  • wow im young and this is vintage great stuff,i was not even born yet but i must say after listening to this today my music today is total horse shit .now i really know justin bieber is shit

  • @oraivan1 great share ty

  • No one has even mentioned that a few of these guys went on to form Journey.

  • This is just electric! I get chills listen to and watching it. I still enjoy the Santana band to this day. Tightest band and percussion of all time.

  • Carlos said he kept trying to bend his guitar neck back strait because it kept melting in his hands

  • @BriBeast8566 I have just read that jaw dropping fact on Wiki and came straight here to see your comment at the top lol!

  • @BriBeast8566 he was actually tripping so hard that he thought the neck was a snake. you can see it cause he kept closing his eyes at some points cause he was like " O SHIT A SNAKE"! lmao

  • 5:26 absolutly trip guy

  • its actually mescaline which is way more badass

  • Thanks

  • Shrieve is great at 20... And our man Santana, is also incredible and only 22 himself!

  • Might well be the greatest live performance ever..... but one guy who never gets his due David Brown, the bass player. He's the glue that holds it all together. Just an unbelievable band.

  • @whooziss Dave Brown was a really sweet, quiet guy who was as into the music as anybody I've ever seen. I worked the door at one of the major venues in SF. Anytime somebody good was playing, and his band wasn't working, David would show up and spend the whole evening watching, listening and (if the chance came) jamming. Always wondered what ever became of him.

  • @beachdog67 He played with Boz Scaggs. He is dead now.

  • @InlineFury1 Sorry to hear that. I liked him a lot.

  • the drummer was amazing.. unreal ..yeah id like to have been there but i was 1 in 68 ..i can dream tho.

  • He was 17

  • @RedOps47 That's what I thought - but check out wiki . .

  • 7:44 LOL
