my preferred route is to use some cheap copper clad PCB and just file off traces.
if you're steady-handed you can get a good level of accuracy

I have used that method before on other projects. I use a Dremel with a saw blade and bur tip which gives a moderate level of detail.
One of the main reasons I used perfboard for this project was to avoid having to drill any holes.

It only took me about 10min to make the first which is way quicker then etching. I slowed everything down for this video (mostly b/c there was a camera in my face!)
