It was for a movie, the helicopter was towing stranded people to safety but crashed and the rescued now have to save the rescuer, Just go's to show that things that arn't on the script could just happen...
This was a T,V soap shoot that went wrong, the rope was too short and not strong enough, when the rope snapped it threw the helicopter off balance and because the rope was so short it didn't have enough height to recover.
Is the chopper tiring to TOW the boat? If you look at 0:16 it looks like a rope or line b/t the boat and Helicopter? That would explain why it crashed, unable to get enough speed due to the drag of the boat...
It was not the pilot's fault. It was mainly the director's fault. 2 reasons
1) Wrong helicopter. The Bell 206B Jetranger is a small partol helicopter, not a rescue helicopter.
2) Wind. There was a wind blowing out from the lake. Keeping in mind helicopter blades are just spinning wings, this caused uneven lift on the left side of the helicopter. It was not because they attatched the rope to the skids, it was attatched to a hook on the bottom. It was due to bad planning.
The tention on the rope applied a force to the right skid creating a pivot where the rope was contacting the skid. This caused the forward motion of the aircraft to become rotational motion around the pivot point. The pilot failed to see it happening and allowed the helicopter's CG to pass over the pivot point. After this happens the craft has exceeded it's critical angle and is unrecoverable.
Its the same exact principles that we helicopter pilots learn when discussing the dangers of sloped landings and hovering sideways into objects. (ie Taxiway lights)
How can a pilot make such a gross mistake ? It is obvious that the drag of a boat on 1 skid would pull the heli right into the water. Lifting even very small charges is a challenge when it concerns helicopters...
Saw this on TV. They were actually filming a stunt for a movie or tv show or something like that. The funny part was that the star decided he wanted to do his own stunts for this one. Nobody died tho so it's all good
