Well its mostly an old belief of people that a man can lead the generation and support the family financially. Due to lack of education and development people fail to undestand the importance of girls. But one day they will realise how baseless and silly this belief is...
Also because they are poor they could probably afford only one child in this lifetime. They prefer a son because he will carry the family legacy. The richer people can afford to have a daughter and have a son later.
Its a beautiful song and very meaningful, but im just saying, there is a root cause to all this.
I don't want to sound like someone who discriminates among the classes, but it is mostly the poorer people who do this. Its because a daughter will cost them just as much as son (if not more) but is less likely to find work to help feed the family. Her marriage will also require dowry, whereas a son's marriage will bring money to the family. I don't think any girl would be happy living knowing that she is just a liability to her family. If women were treated better in the world this would stop.
this song is sung with real feelings . . . and yea, dowry is one of the major causes . . . Think about it - if a girl is born, then parents have to give away the money in form of dowry but still, the girls new family continue to harass her for more and sometimes end up killing her . . .
but if a boy is born, parents would get money and along with that they wont have the " tension " of protecting a daughter . . .

Also because they are poor they could probably afford only one child in this lifetime. They prefer a son because he will carry the family legacy. The richer people can afford to have a daughter and have a son later.
Its a beautiful song and very meaningful, but im just saying, there is a root cause to all this.

I don't want to sound like someone who discriminates among the classes, but it is mostly the poorer people who do this. Its because a daughter will cost them just as much as son (if not more) but is less likely to find work to help feed the family. Her marriage will also require dowry, whereas a son's marriage will bring money to the family. I don't think any girl would be happy living knowing that she is just a liability to her family. If women were treated better in the world this would stop.

this song is sung with real feelings . . . and yea, dowry is one of the major causes . . . Think about it - if a girl is born, then parents have to give away the money in form of dowry but still, the girls new family continue to harass her for more and sometimes end up killing her . . .
but if a boy is born, parents would get money and along with that they wont have the " tension " of protecting a daughter . . .
this DOWRY system is a termite eating our society . . :(

Just because this takes place in Punjab doesn't mean that everyone there are Sikhs. It is written in gurbani that everyone is equal. But not everyone in Punjab reads gurbani. All of you should stop saying that the Sikh religion disgusts you, this song is absolutely amazing.

@harmansher Its pronounced both ways get your facts straight. In the westernized world everyone basically knows it is how it pronounced in English, in our Punjabi accent we pronounce it Sikh. Instead you should be serious about how this wonderful song is, this matter is quite serious but it doesn't seem to affect you and you choose to complain about pronunciation. Open your eyes and ear that god has gifted you and listen and see the tragedy young girls are facing in the world.
