It's bad enough that women have to dance in heels but why are they forced into such unnatural neck posture? I really think it's distracting to the dance when it's overdone. A slight tilt is nice but I hate the whole back bend thing. I know it's a must in professional ballroom but it's sadistic in my opinion and very subservient. Those swooning days are over.
@sagisli There's no forcing. It's mechanically advantageous. The lady's head acts as a big weight on the outside of turns, allowing for much better movement and rotation as a pair.
As to the back bend, there is none. There is not a single moment where her back isn't completely straight. What you see is the lady stretching from the shoulder blades, upwards and out. She's just very flexible.
@MatthewADusenberry Thank you for that very interesting bit of technical information. I re-read my original comment and laughed at myself. I must have been in a bad mood that day. Your commentary is very much appreciated. I also forgot to add in my original comment that I love Mirko & Alessia. They are exceptional and it's hard to say they're dancing, it seems more like floating. They are beautiful to watch.
I see only one Wing here, at 1:05 after the natural fallaway. He drags his left foot forward towards his right foot during the the Wing into position for the next step, the drag hesitation (and backward lock)
I think that step 11 is a turning lock to the left, a back lock doesn't start on that foot, plus you can see its rotation to the left to prepare for the left whisk. IMO anyway.
maruszka1 this is the best standard pair that's ever existed, they don't make "mistakes" on natural turn :D ... watch closer and you'll see it's executed perfectly
There are quite a lot of steps I don't know yet. For a start, could someone tell me the name of the steps at the beginning? I think it is as follows (but there is one I can not identify):
you are very sensitive, I am not an English native speaker but from what I know "to piss off" doesn't have to be understood as offensive. very informal - yes, but not necessarily offensive.
Thank you for posting all those basic videos - me and my hubsband are soon to be in a higher level (we are stil dancing waltz but restricted figures) so if you can be so kind to post the names of those figures they are dancing (in order as they follow...).Some of them I know the names, but not all...Thanks again

My book says of the Wing: LF closes to RF without weight. Pressure on IE of LF. How come I don't often see the pros closing?

I think it's a turning lock to the left between the outside spin and natural spin turn, rather than an outside change.

There are quite a lot of steps I don't know yet. For a start, could someone tell me the name of the steps at the beginning? I think it is as follows (but there is one I can not identify):
Natural Spin Turn 1-6
Turning Lock to Right
Chassé from Promenade Position
1-and-2-3 (?)
Hover Cross
Thanks for your help and any corrections!
Caribbean3838 3 years ago
That one is actually Hover Corte and the 1-and-2-3 is part of the figure. Hope that helps.

why do they go down on the first step?! the first step should be danced FLAT for most of it and you start RAISING at the end of it!
(do I have to explain the whole raising - going down thing?...)
I know it's a common mistake, but if it's supposed to be an instructional video, then it pisses me off :/
maruszka1 3 years ago
I think they are simply softening their knees into a preparatory step??
johnwh46 3 years ago
what you mean by "preparatory step"? the first step? (which they do wrong?...;) )
