  • The very-best Sitar master, for he was soft, very human, very good teacher, and-most humble indeed-and open to foreigners and their music

  • Indian music theory is complicated...

  • damn still beautiful :) ty,

  • Wow! Makes you very quite. I also love the tabla player, Anindo Chatterjee. He makes his tabla sing. The way he supports the music is of great skill to. Thankful to have listened to these great musicians. Fist time I heard Nikhil Banerjee speak.....as suttle as his sitar-playing. Wow!

  • calm me right now. beautiful :) always is the Sitar master. :) respect.

  • very unique..indeed. a singing tabla too.

  • TOCATE TU PUNTEO CRIOLLO PE TIO'

  • very nice

  • Nikhil Banerjee is the maestro of sitar! Dhaivat Raj(sitarist) in my space

  • definitely a true genius but he left his daughter with an amazing talent.

  • These are beautiful tributes to an exceptional man and musician of an equally exceptional tradition and music, that can transcend manas and cultures ... iti (KwaZulu Natal)

  • I can see his beautiful fingers and hear his beautiful voice for the first time. I nearly weeped as he played here. Pandit Nikhil touches the soul. MistySweets... you are so lucky to have these wonderful people in your family :)

  • I love sitar and tired to learn it in my college days in Pakistan at Lahore Arts Council. But my father was old timer never allowed me to continue with it. Then time went by and lost track of everything. Now after 40 years I have bought a sitar and trying to self learn it. and listens to Pndt. BanerJee everyday.

if anybody knows any family member he taught Sitar and is playing now a days. When I listen and watch him playing this Dhun, I can see him being submerged into oceon of Music.

  • Yes he has one student in Ahmedabad India - 90 year old Pandit Sukhraj Jhalla - I learn from him. Although born in Queens New York I live here for this music and perfect style.

  • Sublime! No one could take music to the level Nikhil-babu could.

  • The taan at the beginning of this clip is really beautiful. As best as I could transcribe it, here are the notes (please post any corrections):

  • magical and a gift to us as a world oneness in music and man. blessed be his teachings and memory to all of you. :)

  • I am so proud to say that the late Nikhil Banerjee was my great uncle and the lady featured in the video is my aunt. I cannot fully describe the inspiration he has given me to pursue my own songwriting and love of music. And I am touched by all of the loving responses to this video. Thank you so much to whoever posted it.

  • Hi As a great lover of Nikhil Babus playing I am seeking more of his audio/video clips.

there are already all that i have seen on music india online. there must be reordingas of his younger years.

  • Haha that's amazing. Your aunt is really gorgeous! And a great sitar player, as is your great uncle of course!

  • A rare one. Good video quality. Tons of thanks to the person who posted it.

  • Thanks a Million for posting this AMAZING video!

For me Sitar and Nikhil Da are one and the same.

I am grateful that at least these many video recordings of him exist and that good souls like you have taken the effort to share them with music lovers like me. God bless you.

  • Isn`t the girl his niece, Sheema Mukherjee ( who is also niece of Ravi Shankar)? Just shows you where she was then( like most of us) and has now become a professional... what can be acheived with some dedication!

  • Nice comment. I think you're right. I 'm returning at that place that we never leeved on!

  • I don't know what to say...this is an Ustad, more then capable at any given level of artistry.

  • Bhairavi Raga is also an offering to the Goddess

Search under Goddess Amba video to see the connection

See if He is really invoking her darshan which is very subtle.

I have not heard a more beautiful rendering of the Raga on sitar before.

    Nikhil is 11/10 for me

He stirs my emotional soul each time with his gentler than a angel touch on the string.

Thank you for this rare glimpse of the Mozart of India.

  • Hey is that Viram Jasani of Asian Music Circuit ? He looks pretty slim here..LOL

  • Nikhil Banerjee was the master of sitar -- his touch and phrasing are without match.

In this case, I feel I must also mention the beautiful sitar-playing girl, who is sure to haunt me as I try to sleep tonight.

  • Absolutely amazing! I did not expect to hear Nikhilda talking and explaining in this video. My heart is filled with thanks for whoever that posted this!

  • this guy was a genious. he left this planet to early

  • its a shame its out of sync

  • Thank you for posting my original recording from 1980s Brit TV. Although it would be nice to be credited with the original google upload.

  • UNBELIEVABLE! If ever a man was the embodiment of the Way of Hindustani music, it was Mr. Banerjee. May the Gods bless his spirit and may he long remain in out hearts and minds. May the Gods continue to bless Pandit Anindo Chatterjee too, another outstanding human being and musical genius.

  • Thank you so much for such a great post. This is the first time I am hearing him speak. He is as soft spoken as I had imagined. His music is beyond words. Thank you.
