That is Simon Bates who was one of the top DJs on Radio 1 at the time. He had the anchor spot on the mid morning show and used to bring the country to tears every morning with his slushy "Our Tune" spot - ah the late 70s and early 80s, what a time to have grown up....

What's the name of the Depeche Mode song... the lyrics were something like "Shout, Shout, let it all out, these are the things I can do without, C'mon, I'm talking to you, c'mon??!

What's the name of the Depeche Mode song... the lyrics were something like "Shout, Shout, let it all out, these are the things I can do without, C'mon, I'm talking to you, c'mon??!
...and that`s how it began, wow, that was the first DM-song I ever heard on my radio and then suddenly I was a F-A-N!!! The "New-Wave" was born, that was exacetly my sound!! Nowadays it looks a little strange to me but everyone was looking strange in the 80`s, strange look and strange dancing style (look at Fletch, ggrrrhh!?), that`s history, thank you very much for this video, very interesting, really ugly or cool, I can`t say......
When an Allman brother died, a plane took a Freebird, the Eagles flew apart, and disco was burned alive... a new wave of Brits brought a refreshing look at music by using these new boxes called computers... many feared then that computers would turn our world into a cold, calculated doldrum... D.M, N.O, the list is long, all these guys helped prove different, and if you are reading this, you have too...
don't get me wrong, i loooooove new wave and synth pop, it just irritates me SOMETIMES how all the singers sound alike. deep thick british accents, with no vibrato. i swear i was listening to an album track by depeche mode but thought it was human league.
You mean vibrato a la Whitney Houston? If that's what you meant, NO THANKS! I freaking hate American style of singing, absolutely horrible. It distorts the melody just for the sake of showing off one's vocal capabilities.
i dunno - VC pioneered alot of what synth became in its era. post-vince DM was awesome up until 'violator' - i think they started losing it after that. vince and erasure have put out great and mediocre stuff, but they continue to release masterpieces up to now. great video, though
I love Vince and I love Erasure--don't get me wrong. DM has had some great stuff after Violator-- a few songs on Ultra and Exciter are some of my favorites.
he didn't pioneer anything. human league and other groups were already using the same synth technology well before him and at the same exact time.
vince was loose baggage that needed to go and dm were far superior to erasure. i'm not a big fan of 90's+ era of dm but there new thing is okay and remixes are decent. can't stand erasure's wimpy singer.
Probably not but i've heard him speak in interviews and his voice is deep. If he actually used his deep voice when he sang, he would come off a lot better. imo
Wow... 30 years ago this month, this was 25 June 1981, The band would perform the song twice more on the show, on July 16 and July 30, 1981.

That was when they were THE underground new wave or poppers as we us to call them. A clear rejection of everything Punk, for all I care.
Once they started touring the USA, they screwed it up! Just like the Cure, U2, you name it.
Why is that, every time European artists go and tour America, they come back with shitty sounds?

most of dm's 80s fashion is excellent but this vid does have some spotty stuff. spotty=martin's shirt, daves shirt, fletch's hat.
