so I'm curious then - according to many Greek people I know here (I live in Greece), someone who is born and raised in Greece, speaks fluent Greek, but happens to be, say, BLACK, cannot be Greek, isn't Greek, and are laughed at for claiming to be Greek, but a girl who was born and raised in a country on the other side of the world, happens to have one parent who is Greek and can say "Signomi" and "Ela!" can still be claimed as "Greek"??? is it just because she's talented and sexy?
I think it's a blood thing. She can claim she's Greek because she has Greek blood in her veins, whereas a black girl that was born and raised in Greece with black parents, would not be considered Greek, because she wouldn't have Greek blood running through her veins. I consider myself Dominican, because my parents are Dominican, even though I was born and raised in the USA. I may not know the best Spanish, but the blood in my veins is Dominican nonetheless.
ok. But she's only half Greek, and half American - so my contention is that when I said she was American (born and raised there with American blood - and who knows what else as most Americans come from immigrant families - in her veins) people are telling me, no - she is Greek.
Greek-American she is, but the "Greek" part of that is still just an adjective modifying a noun, not the other way around, sorry...
You made a good point in saying that Americans come from immigrant families, cuz it's true. But you know what? I think that may actually be why Natalie considers herself Greek and holds that culture so near and dear, cuz most Americans hold on to their original ethnicity so close to their hearts. They might be many generations removed from it, like Natalie, but we still never want to forget. and that's highly valued here in America, your own personal history and race.
Also, most Americans don't really consider "American" a race, an ethnicity. We consider where our families originally immigrated from our race, whereas "American" is just something we all have in common cuz America is, essentially, a country of immigrants. I've noticed people from other countries think that "American" is an ethnicity, but Americans don't see it like that. Diversity is HIGHLY valued here, maybe that's why.
well, as I said in my second comment below, she can say words like "Ela!" "Signomi" and "Yiassas" oh, and we can't forget "OPA!" - I've seen her say those on Greek television and then proceed in English, so to be fair, we can't say she speaks NO greek whatsoever ;-) (said with tongue in cheek)
Then that goes back to my original question/point regarding, for example, a black person born & raised in Greece, brought up w/ the culture, language, mentality, & considers themself Greek, but according to most Greeks (in Greece - I live here) that person isn't Greek! & yet a girl born & raised in the USA to 1 Greek & 1 non-Greek parent, doesn't speak any usable Greek & was exposed to the Americanized version of Greek culture - she can claim to be Greek but the black Greek can't? it's absurd.
but the black person would be braught up with african culture and languae from his/her parents :) i have black british friends and they listen 2 african music and eat 'african' food at home. occassionally they dress in african tribal clothing and jewlerry. so, yea.. i guess they can say they're greek in nationality, but not in ethnicity or cultural upbringing if that makes sense. but i totally understand what u mean. im 1/4 greek myself lol but i feel VERY greek and proud lol :D so i dont know!

it is not a matter of speaking the language as much as the kind of mentality she has depending on where she grew up.
