"We weren't interested making a game where you run down to the engineering room and pushing buttons for 30 hours to level up." Cryptic you are so naive and bias. You don't know what fun is at all. I wanted a realistic online Star Trek role-playing game not a freaking boring WoW clone that takes place in space where you just level up, skill up, getting bigger weapons or ships, and more bridge officers all day.
I wanted an action online Star Trek role-playing game where you focus on hack & slash while exploring a world and building character stats, some titles contain many dialogue choices with consequences in the game world and allow you to make many game-altering choices in dialogues and events.
I basically wanted a realistic Mass Effect style online Star Trek role-playing game that has fully voice-over and story driven and where you are able to walk around your whole ship and pushing buttons anytime you want.
i think it would be fun to sit on the bridge as a tactical officer and get to walk around the entire ship while working through the ranks. they should have the game start from Lt.
All you guys saying they've done the wrong thing, they're not listening to true trek fans, yada yada yada, don't know what the heck you're on about. Imagine, I mean really try to imagine a game where all you are is a science officer, or engineer or something aboard a ship. When that ship gets into a scrape, all your doing is pushing buttons the whole time. Really try and comprehend exactly how boring that'd be over the long term. And don't try and tell me you wouldn't find it boring. You would!!
I couldn't agree more. if there's one thing that Star Trek fans want to do is to command a starship and explore the final frontier, not sit around in engineering and keep the plasma flow steady
1 thing that people seemingly arent realizing is this is an MMO... even if the isnt something there that should be there they can ADD it later, or alter it as they go! Kryptic has a good reputation for adding content on the fly
I do understand the need to sell the game well, hence why they targeted the halo playing fast paced console gamer market, if they made a game to cater for star trek fans then it might not sell well. But I don't know any star trek fan that wouldn't more than happy to play a game from the academy all the way up to Admiral, while playing different roles on board a ship and in away teams. I can't see the missions being as varied as they could have been, if you had to work your way up from ensign.
I bet if they asked people who there favorite character was in star trek they would not say captain kirk or Picard or Janeway; they would say someone like Spock or Seven of Nine or Worf, not a captain they really should of done a better job in seeing what the actual trekie population thought.
I don't think they made this with star trek fans in mind, they know we'll play almost anything just to get another fill of star trek, I think they made it so as to be accessable by the masses. It looks to me they want to appeal to those gamers that liked Halo and other such games, the type of gamer that wants the main hero all of the time. I think they miscalculated, anyone who's willing to play an mmo doesn't mind playing a minor yet vital role, because they understand how needed their role is
I wish it wasn't were everyone got a ship i just want to be apart of the crew. I've always wanted to be the Science Officer or the engineer. I would have liked them to do it where you start off in StarFleet Academy or the races equivalent and you could kind of build up your career and become part of a crew or just a mediocre civilian and maybe you are a shop owner. Which would defiantly give a feeling like you were apart of StarTrek and not only that the Economy we be extremely realistic.
I'm really looking forward to this! But.............
Cryptic are terrible at quest generation, and I have a horrible feeling his description of how the quests will work is how EVERY quest will work...
CoX was such a grind/bore because of their lacklustre quest generation. So much so, that I was mortified when I discovered people didn't even have to be at their computers to level up! Farm levels! What a jip!
Make no mistake, this will be just a so-so game. A milk and cookies game like CoH and CO. Its Cryptic, to expect anything else is foolish, I agree with you completely.
WTF? Did they actually talk to any start trek fans? I never dreamt of being a captain and frankly the fact there's no rank system has me peeved (captain should be earned), they should have looked at other mmo's and seen if people are happy to be healers or tanks then being an engineer would be great fun. personally I'd love to have to crawl down jeffrey's tubes and realign phase coils in the heat of battle then fight my way back to the engineering section with a security detachment.
There IS a ranking system, Jet. Just because you start off your career in command of a light cruiser (Miranda class) doesn't mean you actually hold the rank of "Captain".
But their decision on to go with player crews really does make sense. Because above all, a game should be FUN and ENGAGING. Not dull and repetetive, like a 'work' sim that takes place in Engineering, or Sickbay for example. The game would not do very well if they went in that direction.
I have to disagree, if I wanted to be just a captain of a ship I'd play eve online, I wanted to be an engineer and save the ship from a warpcore breach, or a medic on an away mission searching for a cure to a plague or healing my away team. Personally i would find flying around getting into battles all the time, then going on away missions and running and gunning to be repetitive and boring, there's lots of games like that around already. I'd rather be a security officer investigating a murder
I agree, but hitting sitting around at a ship computer for a 15 hour grind doesn't sound too fun. Hopefully away missions will have team members with diverse roles.
The ship battles themselves look a little slow and strange, but I'm not going to judge until it's out.

You do start at Lt., but you still have command of a ship.

the ship battles are awesome...

I feel as if the combat is going to fast.
I know that this was more of a cinematic trailer because they did not show 4 sided shields and control interfaces.

Wrong...wrong...wrong...EVERYONE starts as a captain and you earn better ships through a merit system by completing missions.
