WOW, what a trip! This movie is amazing. They sure don't make them like this anymore. All 4 leads were fantastic. Lizabeth Scott is unforgettable -- her character in Pitfall is a lot like this -- she plays world weary and fragile like nobody else. And I think the push and pull between Van Heflin, Barbara Stanwyck and Kirk Douglas' characters is pure dynamite. You put those 3 in a room together and you've got all you need already.
Can someone tell me something at the end? What did she mean by, " Do you believe me, Walter? " . Then he took the gun out and put it on her stomach. It showed that he didn't believe her. What's not to believe or to believe?
@ConfusedSponge "You believe me" referred to 'things will be different',& you were right,He didn't believe her; And for good reason. Walter had a difficult time living with it,more so than Martha did.
@ConfusedSponge Thanks, man. So we still don't know what's the thing to believe or not to believe, right? Nobody knows, right? Well, the long gone actors and crew maybe! Kirk is still alive!
This was a very good movie! I loved it! Barbara is one of my favorites!!! This was my first Kirk Douglas movie! It was also my fist Lizabeth Scott movie!! Well, I am only 14 years old!! I like them both! As for Van Heflin, this would be at least the third film I've watched! The films that were made back then, were full of excellent quality. At least most of them were. Even if they weren't, at least they were trying to make a decent life lesson or a plot that actually was interesting, unlike now!
This indeed is a movie with a difference. The story has two elements of great dramatic potential: one of the eternal triangle and the other of good and evil, and it exploits both to the full. The plot, the screenplay, dialogue, acting all have gelled so well together!
@spinliquid Great to see this on YT! Got the DVD and its one of those cheapy titles with no subtitles, triailers or extras - the film deserves better. Lets hope they don't remake this and screw it. They had stronger female characters in he movies pre feminism era. Barbara Stanwyck and Liz Scott ..they don't come much stronger than that - both played Elvis boss in 'Loving You' and 'Roustabout'. and Van Helin and Kirk Douglas were particularly good in this movie.
I love this movie, but I already knew the ending right when the movie began because of the Hayes Code.
It basically said that no one could get away with murder (an eye for an eye). It's unfortunate because that rule ruins the ending of a lot of great movies like THE LETTER.
@countrygirltori, I disagree. I think Sam came across as a decent human being while Martha was, like he said, an evil, conniving treacherous bitch. She deserved to die.
Undoubtedly, Van Heflin and Lizabeth Scott carry this film. No disrespect to Stanwyck.
@HAZIDEAD I agree with your assessment of the characters. An interesting study on are percieved on the surface. Martha was also a Bully, A Rich one at that!
Love this movie, but it's public domain, so why break it in to parts?

Don't you think Sam would've been further from the house than that by the time the gun went off?
