I am that guy who gets poked by the police, and i agree that is not serious brutality to any degree, but the force that was used to move me away from the entrance was brutality worthy, and let me tell you i hope that video surfaces to show samuraismm whats up. Btw the administration/media are some fucked up people
I would very much like to see this video of any claimed police brutality that happened. As of now I am not convinced of police brutality. And claims of police brutality are not nearly enough to convince me.
@nightmarecinema33 There is zero call for that kind of language nightmarecinema33. And curb stomping people does fall under brutality, though rather extreme brutality as it would most like end in severe head trauma for the victim and be more along the lines of attempted murder, making it a slightly different case instead of "police brutality" which is very loosely defined as "police hurting people."
@SamuraiSmm And honestly she had that coming. When you go against authority, your gonna get hit. Fact of action. Don't complain about the consequences of your actions. Real protest does not shift focus but rather sticks to the purpose without being sidetracked. You are protesting the financial problems of the education system. Not police brutality.
@SamuraiSmm In addition, I support the ideas behind the protests. I just do not support the actions taken which are unfocused and affecting those who, despite having to deal with these same problems, are negatively affected as a result of the protests. Example: the protests for today involve the blockade of the entrances to UCSC, which I attend. This is all right, however as a result, every service on campus has stopped. All those who live on and off campus are now affected.
@SamuraiSmm As a result of their actions, many of the services are not available for those on campus. Should there be an emergency on campus which requires outside help, it would be seriously delayed by the blockade. Let me remind you of the recent rise in hate crimes on UC campuses. In addition, all students are paying for education, even though their money is being allocated incorrectly. However, shouldn't they still have the right to go to class and learn regardless?
@SamuraiSmm This protest while with good intentions, prevents this for those who still want to learn. Is that not showing disrespect towards those who want to learn? Admittedly, the rising costs and the poor use of our money is also disrespectful for students. However, some students do not need the protest to also affect their ability to learn which it is doing. I'm not saying that students do not support the idea of not having to go to class.
@SamuraiSmm Just that these protests can do more harm than good. Especially once you fall victim to the reduced sanity that arises from being strongly angry.
If it's defined as police hurting people, then why is this video not enough for you? You can clearly see a police officer forcefully spearing a peaceful protester in the chest with a baton.
@nightmarecinema33 You fail to see the point I am trying to make. That definition is incredibly broad and unspecific which means that it cannot be considered a proper argument. Especially with these circumstances.
@SamuraiSmm In addition, people want police officers to be peaceful when dealing with certain people yet forceful with others. Doesn't that show a degree of bias? People demand that everyone be treated equally yet the fact of the matter is that that is a false reality that has no place in this world given the wide range of people. Equal treatment, while it is desired, cannot be accepted by the public when it comes to the police and how act in different situations.
@SamuraiSmm The public demands equal and fair treatment yet when the police deal with smaller crimes with the same seriousness as much more severe crimes, the public claim police brutality and demand police restraint. How can they demand equal treatment and a stronger stand against crimes in addition to complaining about the police being too harsh?
@SamuraiSmm While I agree that there are times that the police have disrespected the power that has been given to them, I will say that I think the police should take the same stand against smaller crimes as they do against larger crimes. This protest was small in comparison to those events that have shaken the nation. However, it is the duty of the police to ensure the safety of the public. That job cannot be taken lightly, even is small situations like this.
@SamuraiSmm You have to remember that the police are protecting the public against themselves. Usually those who commit crimes and acts of violence are members of the public. They can be anyone and everyone.
Why don't you think it applies to these circumstances? It seems pretty clear to me that they were using ecessive force against verbally nonviolent protesters.
Yes, you would see that. If you wanted to blow things way of out proportion.
The only thing that crying out "POLICE BRUTALITY" does in this situation is gain a slight and misguided support for the cause. This method is ridiculous and does not at all help our point of view that tuition increases are making being a student incredibly difficult. I would rather have people supporting our view because of this fact rather than because they dislike police officers.
While support is a good thing, where and why that support is here is even more important.
This is why going on a tangent about any apparent police brutality does not help our argument one bit as it is not the focus of the problem, which is that the increases in fees and the decrease in the support from the education system is making the path for knowledge increasingly difficult and almost impossible for those who do not have the money, even with financial support.
It is not about "Hey we did a protest and then the police came and beat us with batons."
The case of police brutality has a long and extensive history. We know this already. The issue with the education system is relatively new. So why waste time complaining about police brutality and instead complain more about the education system?
Let me also point out a couple of acts of vandalism that have occurred here at UCSC. A spray painted wall at the entrance said: "Destroy capitalism. Destroy the University" Yeah that makes sense for our cause. "Fuck Pigs" was also spray painted at the other entrance. How the hell does that help our cause? Not one bit.
How about the talks about a "communist anarchy" that I have been hearing around campus after the entrance blockades?
Yeah this was the only video i got off police using batons to hit people. my other footage was mostly of the students outside chanting and showing solidarity with the people inside. ill try to put those up as well along with renaming this.
Thats the best footage we got of police brutality? I was inside the building during this... I saw people properly smashed with night sticks.. I hope we can get more.
I would just like to personally thank everyone outside, especially those who left because we put up a barricade. Many people outside went outside because they didn't want to confront police... in the end, they were the only ones that had to physically face them! Thanks guys, you secured our right to leave.
This is great, especially the documentation of police using batons forcefully when unprovoked. Maybe you could rename it so it comes up when people search for kerr hall protest footage. Lets continue to fight for affordable education :)

You call this forceful use of a police baton?
Would you happen to also say that a paper cut is a serious injury?

Thank you so much for documenting this, especially the violence against our fellow students (go about 50 seconds in).
