I really wish their last goodbye would had been like the one in the movie but sadly the reality was that alexander never make it there on time Hephaestion died before alexander make it to ecbatana but still their love be it gay or whatever was one of the most beautifull I've ever read. alexander even got ordered that the sacred flame in the temple to be extinguished and this was only done on the death of the Great King their wifes even were sisters so in the end they could have united their
The sources are not in agreement with the existence of Barsine as Alexander's lover. Also the film didn't show Alexander marrying his second wife Stateira daughter of the former king of Persia and that was a big celebration. The film left out a lot in favor of going back over Alexander's childhood..
Alexander was and Ancient Greek. The Ancient Greeks were more...relaxed about labeling their sexuality than we are nowadays. In fact, it was considered commonplace that an older man would take a younger male lover.
The views on relationships were much different then, and Alexander was a King, so therefore was likely obligated to marry. This doesn't mean he didn't also take lovers, both male and female.
shutterflie and not only for you and to the other idiots must read a real history and fact and dont learn history from hollywood shits.....IN GREECE if you was gay or boylover there was a LAW! that you loose all the politicals rights...you loose the respect of the people...you loose your human rights..if you catch you out to do it again you will kick out from the city or you will go to execute...
i think it could be that alexander was besexual ,but we should not forgett what a powerfull man he was .he was the man with a dream and a plan to reech the dream .we should follow him and should try to belive in our selves too to make history .long live alexander the great.
You must understand the times in which you talk of, over 3000yrs ago! lets speak only of Alexander then, its not a case of him being Homosexual, he wasn't, all of life was to be sampled, women, men, Unichs etc, he also had wives in Roxane, Statiera, and Parysatis and possibly Barsine +children
maybe alexander was gay, maybe he wasn't. no one will know for sure, without proof of some kind.
but back then in the old rome, it was normal for boys/men to have some form of sexual relationship.
something about you could trust that one men - as if he was your better half or so.
i believe that alexander and heph loved each other more than they loved any other. i'm not sure they were bi/gay, but i'm sure their love was one of the greatest, aswell as alexander was.
-and i mean maybe their love for each other was friendly/family-ish or loving. but no one can deny that they cared ALOT about each other. especially based on the funeral that alexander held for heph.
Shame on Oliver Stone for trying to de-gay Alexander in his film. Alexander and Heph. should have been rolling in the hay together. And Heph.'s funeral was THE biggest worldwide event in HISTORY yet Stone made no freakin' mention of it.
Have you seen the movie? They're always talking about how they LOVE each other. And it actually isn't real accurate to history because they weren't gay. If you read enough history, you would know that after Alexander's death, Aristotle started the rumors of them being lovers because Alexander had Aristotle's nephew killed. But of course it would just make too much since to crack open a history book once in a while.
But why do all the historians speak of Alexander and Hepheastion or Hadrian and Antoninus., as gay and not the other famous personalities. ?
They never speak of Julius caesor, Cyrus the great, Genghis khan or any of the Egyption rulers as gay . No body speaks of Russian Queen Catherine the great who dressed like a man gay !
Queen Elizabeth the 1st of England never got married but no one calls her gay . So why only the gay talk for Alexander and Emperor Hadrian ?
Actually there is gay talk of Julius Caesar lol. His soldiers made fun of him for sleeping with the king of Bythnia. Also, name one ancient source that says Alexander is homosexual. None of them do. It's only modern speculation. It doesn't matter though, he achieved some of the greatest things in history and nothing can change that.
If you really are trying to determine whether or not Alexander was bisexual, it's important to remember that our concept of sexuality was not common in his time. Lover/beloved relationships between men and boys were common, but did not determine sexual orientation.
I personally believe that Alexander & Hephaestion were in love and hate that Stone barely showed the romance part of their relationship and ignored the fact that Heph.'s funeral was huge.
@notthatbasic I'm aware that love back then was a lot different than it is now. Hephaistion and Alexander were best friends, there's not doubt about it. They weren't lovers though. If there was any love, it was brotherly love. None of the historical records however, say that Alexander was bisexual. It's a modern myth about Alexander.
@chevychase Oliver Stone didn't "de-gay" Alexander, the ambiguity and bisexual undercurrents were always there. He did justice to the character of Alexander, who was a military commander who annexed the known world. He may have been Greek, but he was more ambitious than sexual. Something his own contemporaries noted. Hephastion was friend, brother and comrade in arms.
This was the guy Alexander loved and valued above everyone else.
@bookkeeper57 Stone should have replicated Hephaestion's funeral in the movie. It was the most spectacular event in the history of the world, yet Oliver Stone left it out completely.
Did we create a modern myth Did we imagine half of it Would happen in a thought from now Save yourself Save yourself The secret is out The secret is out To buy the truth And sell a lie The last mistake before you die So don't forget to breathe tonight Tonight's the last so say good-bye

Alexander with four wives ?) was most definitely NOT gay. He was surrounded by all kinds of people, but he was straight. HIs attachment to Hephastion
was lifelong friendship and mutual loyalty.

except that there is far more proof he had sex with women then proof he ever had sex with men

that's true, but just because there are fewer accounts doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

Go read about Hadrian, will you?
Come back to me then with your laws.
They were more open in Greece then.
I'm not saying Alexander definitely had male lovers, all I am saying in this is that IT WAS ACCEPTED.
shutterflie 1 year ago
also: Alexander actually only married Roxana and Stateira. He also had a mistress: Barsine. It's likely that Alexander just really liked sex.
