I think this is the best song on Sounds of the Universe. It's so beautiful in its mellow and somewhat modest simplicity. I love that about Martins songwriting, even if you strip the songs of all their extravagance and uniqueness that is Depeche Mode, with all their interesting soundscapes, it's still a simple, perfect pop song.

@tazarcos How so? I see Sounds of the Universe as the epitome of Depeche Mode. I read on the DM website, at about the time the album was released, that Martin would receive packages on a daily basis. In these packages, were recording equipment such as old analog synthesizers. The old type of equipment that they used back in the 80's, to record their music on. Much of this old equipment was used in the making of this album. Sure, it doesn't sound like its from 1986...

@madtownmadman ...but a lot of those classic sounds were recaptured with the use of that old equipment. The lyrics and song themes, speak volumes of Depeche Mode characteristics. Remember the slogan on the back of the Playing the Angel CD? "Pain and suffering in various tempos". Well, every DM album has that to it. With no exception to Sounds of the Universe. At least I couldn't say so. Perhaps you could elaborate a bit on whats not so Depeche Mode about this album.

This is a perfect example of how Depeche Mode can not survive without Alan Wilder - his rendition of Jezebel is uncomparable. Sounds, mix, everything. And this is coming from a big DM fan, do not get me wrong please. From the latest LP, I love Wrong or Come Back.

The latest albums are still really good compared to a lot of the stuff released today, but I can't compare DM today with DM 1986-1993, when they really were on top of the world.

Home is an excellent song indeed. But I would say that Jezebel is a more haunting song. Its music and lyrics pocess a power that I have yet to feel in any other song, Depeche Mode or any other artist. Martin is the ever-so-sharp and precise tool to convey that power and feeling this song pocesses. I find that it has the strange ability to extract emotions that are kept in the subconscious, and put them in the forefront of the minds thought processes. Weird, I know. Trust me. Its just that deep.

This is a good song, but by Martin's standards I feel it's a bit lacking - it's a bit 'sweet' and not as dark as it could be. Songs like 'Lillian', 'Bottom Line' and 'Blue Dress' are in the same ballpark but none of them sound as self-conscious as this track. I mean that this has a tendency to sound as though Martin (for the first time) TRIED to write one of his classic tracks, instead of just letting go & trusting in his innate talent. BUT IT'S JUST OPINION, PEOPLE! DM will always be the best.

I agree with you Sledge101, it sounds like Martin wrote this one Sunday afternoon on a Casio keyboard or something. It's a shame because he has more songwriting talent in his little finger than 90% of today's pop acts. He probably did his best work (up till SOFAD) because Alan was around and probably their creative differences had pushed Martin to create something outstanding.
