i was working one day and one of my mindless co-workers was inflating a multi-piece rim and the tire blew and i was walking by at the time , but the ring blew off and skimmed the back of my leg and cut through my carhatts and cut my leg thankfully i didnt get it all or i couldve lost my whole leg
Had an 11r 22.5 zipper on me as I was putting in the core (90psi) several months ago. I damn near pooped myself. The ONLY thing that saved my life was that very cage.
Tire cages are a must when installing Split-Rim tires. One of my friends nearly died when he leaned over a tire to check the pressure and it cut loose, it shattered his eye socket, fractured his skull and he was bleeding from his nose ears and eyes. After striking him it broke another person's elbow. And unfortunately a good friend of mine did lose his life to one of these rims, a catterpillar scraper rim cut loose and took him clean in two, please use a cage or urge your employer.
@bolt586 no he's still breathin, sidewall blew out while clamped to tyre machine, smashed his arms on the way up,nearly hit the roof, and hit him again on the way down.got on to the tyre distributor and they said it wasn't the first one to fail, bad batch maybe?..nothing like a truck tyre,i've heard of some horror storys in my time as a mech.
This is a great investment for any shop. I work on aircraft and we inflate to over 200 PSI everyday. Guess what, we do not allow a new tire to be inflated outside of a cage when we change tires. On the aircraft we have regulators that allow a max of 250 PSI.
In 1982 I watched a guy recieve a broken arm while airing a 10.00x20 tire. he didnt have a clip on chuck was holding the chuck by hand and the lock ring came off Fred lived but was out for about 9 mos.
How many "bosses" would think along the lines of "a cage ain't gonna keep a tire from blowing up. If it's gonna go it's gonna go"! I've known people that think of fuses as completely unneeded "A fuse ain't gonna keep nothin' from shortin' out!" It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that way instead of the safety aspect.
this is bullshit, the cages are for split rims.
