Since then the power company no cut the power even if the poor families can't pay the bill.

this is terrible, i live in the netherlands and we have extensive safety nets here due to a progressive tax system but still im worried about the future and seeing this im happy i dont have children. Many of us are struggling but we should help each other when we can. Recently I was in Hawaii, I saw lots of homeless people; many live in tents along the beach. While in Waikiki, everyday after lunch I would share my food. I was so depressed by what I saw I went to the mgr. of the Cheesecake Factory & asked for his help in feeding them. He informed me they work w/an organization that feeds the hungry but he helped anyway. There were a lot of smiles on their faces & I felt so happy & grateful.
I feel guilty now about every single thing I asked for Christmas. These kids don't even have a home, or food, and here I am complaining about not having a horse? I used to live in Florida, really close to Disney, too, and they're right -- you wouldn't expect ANYTHING like that down there. This really opened my eyes. Thank you, 60 minutes.

What strikes me are some of the really harsh and condescending remarks made here. So far, I've never experienced poverty whatsoever in my life and I've been living a good life so far. Yet I do know that most people that live in impoverished situations, especially children, cannot be blamed for their fate, as some of the remarks imply. It's so easy to talk about obesity or the responsibilities of home ownership to redirect guilt solely to people themselves and not imagine it's not their fault.
I know these are hard times, but the point is that IT IS NOT THE GOV'T's ROLE to feed people. As long as we continue setting up social systems to feed/clothe/house everyone thru the age of 18, we'll continue to have this problem.
Why are the parents fat? That completely confounds me.
I say this while volunteering and donating to a church that has a huge ministry to get groceries for these kids during school vacations. But the key is to EMPOWER them and their families, not to coddle them.

My Dad always used to put homeless people down when we were kids, leaning out of the car window to shout “Get a job, losers!” at them.
Well since his business failed a few years back the shoe’s been on the other foot! He lives with us after suffering a breakdown so I always remind him he’s technically homeless himself. Occasionally I emphasise the point by putting him out for the night somewhere random- if Police pick him up I just explain that the Alzheimer’s made him wander off & get lost.

This seems to be bullshit. In my state welfare is very good. Free house free food free medical. Especially if there are kids involved. I know women in brand new 3 story houses paying $25 a month for rent. A woman with 4 kids gets $800 a month in food benefits. medical and dental.

The "little experiment" of the founding fathers has ultimately ended in abysmal failure. Many of us are struggling but we should help each other when we can. Recently I was in Hawaii, I saw lots of homeless people; many live in tents along the beach. While in Waikiki, everyday after lunch I would share my food. I was so depressed by what I saw I went to the mgr. of the Cheesecake Factory & asked for his help in feeding them. He informed me they work w/an organization that feeds the hungry but he helped anyway. There were a lot of smiles on their faces & I felt so happy & grateful.

I feel guilty now about every single thing I asked for Christmas. These kids don't even have a home, or food, and here I am complaining about not having a horse? What strikes me are some of the really harsh and condescending remarks made here. So far, I've never experienced poverty whatsoever in my life and I've been living a good life so far. Yet I do know that most people that live in impoverished situations, especially children, cannot be blamed for their fate, as some of the remarks imply. It's so easy to talk about obesity or the responsibilities of home ownership to redirect guilt solely to people themselves and not imagine it's not their fault.

I know these are hard times, but the point is that IT IS NOT THE GOV'T's ROLE to feed people. As long as we continue setting up social systems to feed/clothe/house everyone thru the age of 18, we'll continue to have this problem.
Why are the parents fat? That completely confounds me.
I say this while volunteering and donating to a church that has a huge ministry to get groceries for these kids during school vacations. But the key is to EMPOWER them and their families, not to coddle them.

My Dad always used to put homeless people down when we were kids, leaning out of the car window to shout “Get a job, losers!” at them.
Well since his business failed a few years back the shoe’s been on the other foot! He lives with us after suffering a breakdown so I always remind him he’s technically homeless himself. Occasionally I emphasise the point by putting him out for the night somewhere random- if Police pick him up I just explain that the Alzheimer’s made him wander off & get lost.

So the programs for the homeless in Florida are being cut not because of less tax revenue from the rich/businesses, but due to ever increasing amounts of public money taken to fund a corrupt political machine that is making millionaires out of public employees while needed social programs suffer. You can't fix that with higher taxes on the rich (the opposite will result)--you need to eliminate the power of public employee unions.

@snarkishone (part II). The point being is that the public employee unions use hundreds of millions in tax dollars to lobby for increases in taxes and benefits and pay--been doing it for years. Its to the point now that they earn more than private industry and retire as millionaires (and yes--I can show you the cost of even modest pensions run into the millions--and worse--many PAY NO SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES!!! So they get a much better retirement and don't share in the poor subsidy!!

@snarkishone--your point? I'd be the first one to say we need to LOWER the sales taxes, the property taxes, and the payroll taxes on everyone, not increase taxes on the rich or businesses. The problem is the dumb masses are fed this nonsense that we need all these taxes for "services" when in fact the services have been reduced dramatically over the years while the tax RATES have gone up dramatically (I remember 2% sales and FICA taxes) (part 1)

END THE FED, It is a private bank. We pay interest to them to borrow money (into existence) from ourselves, before 12/24/1913 (christmas eve) we got most revenues from corporations, the rich payed %90 of all income in taxes, now they pay no where near %50, its like 32, and bush tax cuts would make it %37, 1 in 7 on food stamps nationwide.....

@weaverdreams--you need to learn some FACTS. The rich already pay the lion's share of the taxes while the bottom 50% of taxpayers pay very litte. The reason social programs are being slashed is NOT due to a loss in tax revenue, its due to A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN THE COST OF GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE SALARIES AND PENSIONS. Check it out--in Florida many municipalities and government entities are retiring employees in their 50s as millionaires. That's why there is no money left for social programs.

That does it; I'm through with this piece-of-shit country. It has decided that the rich must win on _every_ substantial issue, and this and ever-increasing misery for the non-rich is and will be the result. The "little experiment" of the founding fathers has ultimately ended in abysmal failure. They were careful to provide checks and balances on government power but unfortunately neglected to provide means to limit _private_ concentrations of power, and tyranny of the rich is the end result.

Anyone have any ideas to help fix some of our country's problems? I've heard if you're not part of the problem then you're part of the solution. Anyone feel like maybe instead of all arguing about who what why ... maybe start coming up with ways to contribute in a positive way? I'm just saying. Everyone wants to complain, ...
