A little known fact about hippos is that they are prone to the same swarming instincts as locusts as a response to overcrowding. Increased tactile stimulation of a hippo's hind legs causes an increase in levels of serotonin, the hippo will change color, eat much more, and breed much more easily. It is estimated that the largest hippo swarms can span hundreds of kilometers. Tropical storms have been known to actually pick up and carry a swarm of hippos across the Atlantic Ocean.
