  • so is tabata just another word for HIIT

  • Gonna give this one a whirl today... Wish me luck

  • 30lbs in a couple months! Damn you're a beast and so is your workout regimen....

  • If anyone needs a Tabata Timer I uploaded the one I built and use here: tabata[.]isgreat[.]org (remove the [])

No donwload necessary, free to use, enjoy.

  • @HighlySkilledWorker Thanks! Could you please do a pause function?

  • @MachoMaster I'll see what I can do. The problem is that by pausing, you will not do a propper Tabata training.

  • Following the 2:1 ratio of Tabata is based on the research, but for someone just starting the ratio should be about 1:2 to 1:5.

This will allow for enough recover to work to an intense level during the work part. If there isn't enough rest, it becomes similar to a continuous aerobic exercise.

I've heard using a heart rate monitor is also very good, as it ensures that a high heart rate is achieved during the work part, and then returns to a low level during the rest.

  • My coach used to kill me with this in my kickboxing days. I still have nightmares today.

  • You should be in fairly decent cardio shape before attempting tabata, as a general rule. You don't want to take somebody who's greatest exercise is walking into work from the parking lot (most of my co-workers). And ya, you CAN'T do this every day. I did at first, but had a crash after the workout on the 7th day. I never do consecutive days anymore. long, steady cardio is better between.

  • Set the bell to begin the start of your eating session - eat for 4 minutes and then honk the horn to stop - ring a cowbell and bang a gong vigorously to exercise your arms. Sorry, but any routine that needs bells and whistles is absurd.

  • funny how ive searched every blog in regards to how much weight people lost with tabata...and every one of them is like ..' (before stats)so i have done tabata for 2/3 weeks ...keep you posted'' then nothing... its like... noone can keep up doing it.. guess its a statement to its brutality.

  • so this is the only cardio you would do all day?..what about weight training?

  • They say this is more efficient then a hour endurance run. AND they have research to back this up. Sounds good to me mate.

  • Im in the same boat as this big guy, im puhsing 3hun and wanna get to 210lbs. I hope this really works!

  • Shouldn't you warm up before doing something this intense? I did the HIIT workout and I warmed up before, it really helped.

  • His intensity level isn't high enough for this to be tabata.

  • @ryta1203 He's on the maximum resistance on the eliptical dude, you know how hard that is?

  • Honestly with Tabata workouts at 4 minutes, FOUR, if one keeps making excuses for not having time... I pray for such person!

  • i would kill to see jim carrey do this 2:00

  • I had no idea you could do tabata with cardio, i hate doin cardio, and i been doin HIIT anyway, will 4 mins of tabata burn as many calories as 20 mins of HIIT, and do i need to warm up first?

  • Good job!!!

  • he's talking fairly easy after the workout - too much juice left over ....

  • @brownhd

It was probably several minutes after the work out.

  • good to see another big dude on the cardio gear.

  • took my first stab at this workout today AFTER my bench day... holy shit. i thought i was going to puke blood

  • Did it today to after seeing it in mens fitness. This almost killed me.

  • where is the warm up B4 starting to do the high intensity intervals?

  • @4uteja It is a 14 minute routine - 5 minute jog at mid pace, 8 tabata rounds at max pace, then 5 minute cooldown at mid pace ...

  • @brownhd

I think he meant in the actual video.

  • @brownhd Wrong

  • I love Tabata! Especially air squats!

  • tabata IS interval training, thats why they are called tabata intervals.

  • But tabata is a specific type of interval training. You cannot reach the intensity required, unless you're on a bike or elliptical.

  • Well, to be precise, I guess you can do it on a treadmill, but that's probably not a good idea.

  • tabata increases fat burning capacity and you get leaner, NOT good for building mass....what your goal is should determine whether tabata is right for ya

  • Comment removed

  • If you want to lose weight just run, but if you want to lose body fat while maintaing your strength, tabatas are best. Tabatas are a type of High Intensity Intervals so they naturally burn fat while improving strength. Muscle growth will occur, but if you are a girl it wont be enough to make you uber muscular. Especially if you dont eat for muscle growth.

  • 200? You can do it, big man!

  • I tried tabata on the stair climber today. I did it after lifting. BAD MISTAKE! I almost died.. I could only complete 3 sets. I was dizzy and almost threw up. For 15 minutes I was out of comission.

  • I just started doing tabata stuff yesterday. I did 4 tabatas: Crunches, Pushups, Jabs, Crosses. It is brutal.

  • You Rock! Do them every day. Isn't a faster way known to science to increase fitness!

  • @neilshealthnfitness Your statement is not true.

Many people listen to your advise. If you choose, you may want to be more responsible with your free advise. I am like you in that my services are free of charge. I trade time. Keep up the good work, we are on the same side.

  • @MrSub4 Thank you for your (somewhat pious) comment. I am unaware of fitness protocol with more peer reviewed, researched and proven effectiveness than that of Dr. Izumi Tabata's. We would all be pleased if you would share your more effective scientific methods. Thank you in advance.

  • @neilshealthnfitness: Wait a second:

In the site that this video comes from (Tabata Protocol), it says that you SHOULDN'T do this exercise every day because that's dangerous! I've read a bunch of sites about Tabata and they all say you should skip a day between each workout to give your body time to heal, because if you do it every day it can cause serious cell damage.
