On second note, I wonder why they never implemented this mini-ship idea for otherwise high risk recons.

@uberjens - Because they are attacking main characters. It isn't possible to hit a main character unless the plot allows it.

Breen are Alphas, the Federation knew about them before finding the wormhole.

I understand that it is supposed to be "shrunk", but it seems to grow and shrink from scene to scene. However, with all the varying sizes of the Defiant, it's probably the Defiant itself that's changing in size.

yeah I guess, but they'd have to set it to an incredibly small yield. I mean, Photon torpedoes have 1.5 Kg of antimatter in them, and that would've been shrunk to about 1/15 of a gram (if they didn't maintain their mass), so they'd probably have had to set it to 1/10000 of that power (if not less). That's a pretty big waste, why not just use phasers?

we know that Jemhadar are pretty resiliant against phasers (stun setting has no effect on them at all)

so maybe they thought the tiny phasers might not be enough to kill them

Yes, but they're using known laws of physics relating to energy release. Previous Star Trek series have been faithful to reality in this case, and it is supposed to be science-fiction (emphasise science).
