Who gives a flying shit about Bekele! He is the world record holder by about 15 seconds over the entire world. Everyone looks like shit compared to him! I'm not an Ethiopian! I'm happy to see Americans do great, only 2-10 new people break 13 every season since 1995. All them do it in one of the three or four rabbited record chases. It's never done alone. So unless you plan to get into those race you are not going to hit that time.
pause at around 8:31 and watch Bekele's right foot come down. Obviously a forefoot striker, but notice how the foot rolls inwards a bit, angling out towards the right instead of facing straight like his left foot does. Is the best distance runner in the world an overpronator? GASP! He needs orthotics! But does he use them? NO! Again proving that you do not need orthotics to be able to run.
the most interesting thing is that ritz didn't train to be a 5000 guy. he runs 10000's and marathons and he didn't expect to get anywhere near this. so if he starts focusing on the 5000, he might become one of the best in the world! he might even run with bekele when he's at his best! that would be cool
Actually I'm beginning to suspect that when you're a track runner who has a marathon experience/ training, you get temporarily quicker on the track. For example, in 2002, Gebreselassie ran his first marathon, but came back next year in 2003 and ran the second half of the WC in 12:58 as well as the second fastest 10000m of his career; Tadesse of Eritrea also had a marvelous 10000m in Berlin following a disappointing marathon experience.
But don't go too far: Ritz did well that day, but if he has only one run under 13:10 (Bekele's pace for his 10000m WR), and not nearly as many medals, he and Bekele cannot be compared. They've raced each other 12 times since 2001, when Bekele won the World Junior XC championships by a blowout margin (to his credit, Ritz took bronze, the only medal ever won at that venue by an American before or since).
@phoamsw0rd13 While training/ coaching is extremely important to an athlete's success/ outcome in races, the way you put it is a little nonsensical; it's not an if-then statement: "If I train under Salazar, then I will run under 13:10." Certainly he's had more confidence, nurtured by Salazar's coaching, but that doesn't mean that everybody is going to succeed just from being coached by Salazar. Ritz has run plenty 5Ks in his life, stretching back to his high school days.
don't u think i know that? it's not an if-then statement of "If I train under Salazar, then I will run under 13:10," it's "if i train under salazar, then i'll be doing more speed work instead of the super long workouts i've been doing since college which will make me a BETTER 5k runner, rather than a 10k runner."
PhoamswOrd13. No the hell way. He trained full time for the 10k and got beaten by bekele by 36 seconds. Ritz is a great runner but you can't compare these two at all. Every since 2001 bekele has beaten him every time they race. This was just a perfect race for ritz. Every runner has these eventually.
I love this quote, "Running in last is Dathan Ritzenhein of the United States....and Ritzenhein towards the back of the field beginning to lose contact".
And this quote, "Well there's a charge going on from Dathan Ritzenhein fo the USA. He's back in fourth place, but he's covering the ground quickly".
Oh and this quote, "This proves that North Americans can stick it to the East Africans...he cannot believe it (Ritz), he's almost in tears with that run".

the only reason he hasn't run more than 1 5k under 13:10 is because he's only run 1 5k since being coached by alberto salazaar.
