...if this were f1 F1 he would have been penalised, possibly disqualified for making contact with herta like that. what are the regulation concerning contact in cart/indy?
@mikelzthing As I recall those years in F1 it was extremely rough between Schumacher, Villeneuve, Hill, Coulthard, Frentzen and Hakinnen including several instances of drivers obviously and deliberately wrecking each other. It got way out of hand before disqualification was even threatened. In this case Herta was hesitant and Zanardi was perhaps too aggressive. There was no intention. Herta wouldn't have won anyway, he was trying to run lean, lame and slow to the finish.
When I think of a race that is a testament to Alex Zanardi's skill I always think of this one. It's hard to pass your way through half the field once, but the whole field twice??? Went a lap down and still came back to finish forth??? He was lapping how much quicker then everyone else??? That, my friends, is talent.
This is hilarious. Tremendous respect for Zanardi, but he got it all wrong today. And to think, he might have won the race by a mile if he practiced a little restraint on that first lap.
ny one who know what happened after this!! with both zanardi and herta!!..i remember whne i saw a raca at laguna seca raceway....it was the last lap and herta was leadin and zanardi was in the second place....damn! at the corkscrew turn at the last part of the track zanardi passed through herta and won the race..poor brian herta always had to put up with zanardi!
I've had those days, as well, when you're quickest by far and push yourself into a wall. But honestly...that's the most amateur thing to take out the leader. I suppose he's a good driver because he drives so hard, but Zanardi or not, that's the most retarded mistake I've ever seen. What would he gain from such an aggressive move that's not even for position? I just lost so much respect for Alessandro.

The '97 and '98 CART World series champion Alessandro Zanardi ran off the track and let Rahal past him on the first attempt.
The second attempt, an another off-track excursion and let Gugelmin past.
He tagged Herta and fined after the Grand prix of Vancouver

The '95 to '97 layout but the '98 to '04 layout is better.
