Bob Cole is half senile but I still love his passion, Chris Cuthbert has a great voice and seems like a genuine and really friendly guy, Hughson has a FANTASTIC voice for commentary, and Doc Emrick's love for the game comes through in every word. Four of my favourite announcers ever.

Apparently having a non-annoying voice is not a prerequisite in becoming a game announcer. The guy who does play by play for NHL on NBC is just as annoying, not to mention you can barely hear the commentators as NBC jacks up the volume of the crowd, also very annoying.

Calling Rick Jearnet the best commentator ever is like calling Patrick Kaleta a clean player. Do you realize how awful and biased Jearnet is? He is fucking terrible.
In the 90s for me it was Jim Robson (I apologize to jackassed Ontario hockey fans who never got to hear him and thought Bob Cole was a god), Jim Hughson, Chris Cuthbert and Don Wittman. Now it's Hughson, Cuthbert, John Shorthouse (use Google, my Ontario friends), and (I hate to admit it) Mike Emerick who does US hockey broadcasts. I respect Bob Cole now more than I ever did, but he's still not the best. He's the announcer with ADD. Sometimes I think I'm listening to baseball.

Cuthbert is probably better than most of the morons we have calling games here in the States - with maybe the exception of Thorne and Emrick. I enjoyed him and Pierre McGuire doing the Flames/Hawks series this past playoffs. They made a great team.

In 1998 I destinctly remember your call of Jamie Langenbruners O.T goal, 46 seconds in, against Chris Osgood from centre ice. I remember "Jamie Langenbrunner scores for Dallas"!!! Your call excited me, and made me believe that you actually cared about the game you were calling. Its no different now. The Stars games you call are all with heart, for or against my boys. Love the calls, keep it up Chris!!!

Cole peaked in 1987? He was just getting WARMED UP. Cole was great throughout the '90s as well. 2010 is probably Cole's final year, I know I'll miss him in the booth...

Good announcers should be good regardless of whether the game is exciting or not that exciting at all.
Listen to Gord Miller. He is ALWAYS exciting to listen to.

when the cbc went on strike, other networks were free to pick up any staff on strike, for they had no contract. TSN managed to pick up Cuthbert
