why wouldnt he say the eiffel tower? its france. the city of love and romance. why wouldnt you pick that as the spot to propose? who gives a crap about the golden gate bridge?
As you say, the Eiffel Tower was the obvious answer - too obvious I thought at the time. The Golden Gate Bridge was more of a novel idea so seemed more plausible. By the way, France is a country, not a city.
