Rewatched S6 again and again, and I think now that Sawyer and Kate were already partially 'awake' when on the plane. They had to find the other people they're supposed to help awaken, like Juliet and Claire. The reason why Sawyer slept with Charlotte was, because he thought she might be Jules. Jules was an other, they can't remember an other, until fully awaken. Therefore Kate didn't recognize Ethan either. Anyways, there are tons of red herings that point to Skate already being awake. Rewatch!
