Alright so I'm in 9th grade and did the shot a little last year. There isn't a throwing coach at my school this year. I can teach all the kids about discus just fine, but I need to get better at shot. I saw that there were many diferent styles of shot on here, not just like discus where you do the full spin. Which technique should I use?
i think the main thing that ulf so great was that he had so much power and explosiveness on such small frame. so power to weight was just off the scale.he was just strong as randy barnes and udo beyer when comes to leg strength but he only weighed like 245 lbs while udo weighed 285 lbs and barnes weighed 302 lbs.
he was far stronger than barnes becuase glide requires more strength and explosiveness but spin generates more speed and power and beyer was lucky to be alive, after the collapse of the soviet union it was reveled that beyer was taking about 4 kilos of roids a year, so yes ulf should be higher than what he is
true but randy barnes squat when broke the wr was around 700 lb range and that was ruffly what ulf was at to but i do believe that ulf snatch and clean might been higher so yeah probably his explosiveness was more but his light weight body with tons power that he had ; coupled with awesome techinque that lead him to be so great. but just because he is glider doesn't mean he always stronger then spinner cause i know christian cantwell is stronger then ulf. 650 lb bench and 800lb full squat.
While I dont totally disagree with this list, Cant help but think Al Feaurbach(spelling) should be on here, was one of the most dominating throwers of the 70's.
Al was great and a huge influence...but without the world titles and ONLY one world record the was short lived as compared with others , he unfortunately didn't show up on the list.
i love feurbach dont get me wrong but timmerman is the best glider ever. i dont care if he was juicing or not. cuz a lot of the guys back in the 70s were too. feurbach would go to a weight lifting competition one day and throw 70+ the next day. that screams of juice. but i give those guys a pass cuz they didnt know any better. it was just like how some of us take creatine now a days. im just saying timmerman was best and that it didnt matter if he juiced cuz feurbach probably did too.
he has medaled in every major championship since 2000 3 wc silvers, 2 olympic silvers, and one wc gold....who else has been that successful as a shotputter?
yeah I know...Adam is great...but WHO would ya kick out to put him in there? and before you insert him , you would have to take a look at the others that weren't on the list Gunthor and Andrei...just saying top 10 is a big deal...he can't be more important than Beyer who had a WR for 8 years, or Dallas Long , and Godina has the same resume as Adam but with more gold medals...tough desicion.
Adam Nelson is honestly a disgrace. He fouled out 5 times in Athens, and 3 times in the first round at Beijing. America thought we would get 1, 2, 3, which wasn't going to happen anyways, but still, he let the entire country down.
Adam has had a great career , as great as he is , it just shows how great these throwers were...he and the other big 3 have no medals , no WRs , and done nothing else that has drastically changed the sport, or effected it in such a way to define it...great thrower though
I think the throwers of the 70s and 80s should be thrown out. That was a dirty era - steroids. No proof the East Germans for rhoided but none of the modern day euro gliders have come close. If the training methods of the 70s and 80s were valid then we'd have more 70foot gliders today.
I agrre Ulf should be higher but when we looked at it closer he only had the record for a year or so , and didn't have that many majors ,whereas Barishnikov invented the spin and influenced so many and was first over 22meters, Carter has his record for 30 years and Matson is the first ever over 70ft and has the record for the second most years of all...so 7th was where he fell to...but never the less ULF is just a huge influence on all of us.
Yeah Andrei was great but at the expense of who? and really didn't have the record for any length of time compared with the others...also Gunthor didn't find a spot for him either.
Sorry to break the bad news but Ulf lost the world record in the 90s to Randy Barnes

I think it should be noted that michael carter got silver in the 84 olympics I think and all his college accomplishments
TheAlmightyBBB 2 years ago
John Godina should not be on this list, he didnt win olympic gold and didnt break any world records
peterottodelzer 2 years ago
but he has the most medals out anybody here. granted i think he should be 10 th and not 8 th.
cdeavellar1 2 years ago
so what he is the most decorated shotputter of all time.
23072bigmo 2 years ago
ulf was the most powerful glider in the world. He might not have had the the build but there was nothing else he did'nt have in excess.

ulf wish he could put up those number. but he still thae man thou
cdeavellar1 2 years ago
athleticism also makes up for lack of strength. Oldfield wasn't very strong either, but he could run 10.5 and high jump 6'7
chadcite 1 year ago
yeah thats true. he was very athletic
cdeavellar1 1 year ago
parry o'brien holy crap. it must have been awesome to invent a new technique and dominate for that long with the whole world trying to catch up
xylidinehl 3 years ago 2
i think timmermann should've at least been in top three; he had 16 competitions over 22m, most of anyone . cool video though
Raikage100 3 years ago 2
O'Brien is the undisputed #1 though
Raikage100 3 years ago
agreed...but ulfy should be top 3....he is the fucking man
bbreezy19 3 years ago
I heartily agree. 20 year olympic record and greatest glider of all time. Def top 3
rockallnite53 2 years ago
i think he should be 4th.

Godina is a salt of the earth kind a guy. He promotes the event(s) and coachesat track camps.
leutenantdan58 2 years ago
salt of the earth? you are the first person that i have ever heard say that.but yeah he does promote alot of events and such now for track and field.
cdeavellar1 2 years ago
id like to see Gunthor or John Brenner or possible Adam Nelson. but besides that i mostly agree with this list.

Yeah Feurbach was the greatest glider of all time and if he had been taller than he was (5' 11") he would have put world record over or near 74 feet
Raikage100 3 years ago

Agreeing with everybody Timmerman higher, could you make a vid of the best 10-15 shot throwers based upon average distance... thanks for considering.
