  • Believe it or not, civil defense in the 1950's was less irrational than it seems now. The only way to deliver atom bombs back then was the bomber, and the Soviets had prop-driven "Bear" bombers, which would take many hours to get to the USA and most were quite likely to be shot down beforehand. So it was possible that few enough bombs would hit the USA to make Civil Defense realistic. The era of hundreds of < 1 hour ICBMs, which made civil defense pointless, did not begin until the mid 1960s.

  • how about bend over and kiss your a** goodbye!

  • Sad that there was people that lived near test sites and had to deal with the damage and testing for the bombs. However, lighter note of sarcastic dry nerd humor lol the civial worker is future Enclave soldiers, and the narrator is President Eden's grandfather! Hurry to the Vaults! lol

  • i´d like to know if they made jokes about this thing in their time, f.e. use flashlights of their camera to frighten ppl and look if they would duck and cover in time, LOL

  • all these ways of safety are how the japs got blown up (sorry for any racism)

  • yes duck and cover... that will deff stop u from gettin vaporized

  • I would be the guy who farts under the table... xD

  • The REALLY SCARY thing is that we believed this stuff!

  • Nice jingle though. lol "Just duck....and covvverrrr... duckand coverrr"

  • if you are lucky you die when the shockwave hits you. You woun't know what happens with you when the radiation strikes you.

  • it's just hard propaganda!

I think, first they tell you, to protect yourself (with a newspager?!?) and they also tell you, that this bomb is VERY dangerous.

And some years later the tell you, the UdSSR is the most bad nation of the world and that the UdSSR will drop the bomb on your homeland.

There are some interesting vids about the propaganda at the Cold War, especially American propaganda. Just google!

  • I think its much more important to think about your children's future then choose anger.

  • Comment removed

  • this woud not help you

  • duck and cover is stupid... it should be run and get the fuck out of there because duck and cover will not protect u from fallout

  • Well in this case of the atomic bomb, well duck and cover and kiss your ass goodbye

  • Hmm... if you can see the bright flash then you're probably not going to be able to see anything afterwards to duck or cover behind.

  • if your in the oven hot yet survivable area (furtherst immediatly affected area) does this actually help, or would running be a good idea?

ye olde SAS manual has alot of info about surviving nuclear explosion, apparently 6 foot of ice is enough to stop gamma the same as a much smaller thickness of lead, though building a 6 foot thick wall of ice is no easy task. also if you have cuts, cover it because alpha could hit your blood directly and beta would easily get through. and get a gas mask.

  • wow something tells me a newspaper coming your face ain't going to help

  • if your within 25 miles of the bomb ur screwed even if u do "Duck and Cover"

  • i genuinally find it hard to believe that ducking will help in any way from an atomic blast. id say the best bet is to run as far from the blast zone as you cann lool

  • An Atomic blast can destroy fortified concrete and steel structures for miles on end but CANNOT penetrate a standard school desk. Everyone knows that

  • Ducking and covering wont completely save you, even though it will help. You will still end up like a ghoul in Fallout 3 XD

  • so incredibly sad... it's not like it would've made any difference...

  • Wow this is so sad man D:

  • actually this is in some ways true its not funny its serious if ur logically far enough away it wont hurt you "theoretically"

  • Insturctional video for put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.

  • even a newspaper can protect u from a nuke! remember that kids

  • Hiroshima victims in light clothing suffered less extreme burns than those wearing dark clothing.

  • ok so it doesn't matter what you do you are going to be hurt. so.....yeah

  • Lewis black is so right!

  • This is fu**ing epic.

  • I think that it had something to do with the fact that they didnt know as much about it as they did now. That's why it seems so funny and sad to us now that they thought that this procedure would protect them

  • 5:38... Ummm... unless the table falls on you...

  • interesting that the US is the only country that has ever actually used a nuclear weapon...

  • japan pearl harbor...ring a bell?

  • I said nuclear. Not atomic...Ring a bell?

  • They are synonymous. An atomic bomb is a nuclear bomb.

  • from Wikipedia:

In the history of warfare, only two nuclear weapons have been detonated offensively, both near the end of World War II. The first was detonated on the morning of 6 August 1945, when the United States dropped a uranium gun-type device code-named "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The second was detonated three days later when the United States dropped a plutonium implosion-type device code-named "Fat Man" on the city of Nagasaki, Japan.

  • psh yeah like a newspaper cant burn, this is what you call propaganda, does this remind you of the soviet union, yeah the U.S is nothing like the communist countries...yeah

  • this was made so that ppl would think that they could survive a nuclear attack. It was made so that ppl wouldn't be afraid.

  • you need something to cover you so that is why they have a newspaper, though i must say it is not the smartest idea, I do think it might help...

    um maybe

  • we watched this today =D

  • This wasn't a plan to try and keep ppl safe, it was trying to keep ppl' from being scared

  • hahah we saw this today at school

  • pxaxaxaxax DUCK AND COVER.........the only thing which is going to happen is its gonna burn you and kill all over the city :D:D there is no way for a ordenary man to survive on nuke attack. You need a shelter and a Safe costume agaist the Uran without that your toooo fuckt up.

  • Duck and cover is a good idea not all people will be in line of sight of a nukes heat or gamma rays. Lots of people can be saved if they find a good spot to tuck them selves in to avoide falling and flying debris

  • Maybe if they were in a bomb shelter retard.

  • it is simply amazing how fucking stupid people were.

  • If your outside, your fucked. Simple as that lol.

  • fuck this!!

im not gonna spend the last seconds of my life under a table, im gonna get up and do the robot.

  • a newspaper sure will save you

  • I enjoyed this, but it's not so much funny as it is absolutely horrifying

  • Duck & cover kids so you will get vaporized faster! :D

  • lol our history teacher had us watch this, then the 'Nuclear Blast on a House' video.

Then she said, "Duck and cover kids!"

    xD

  • Our teacher was weird also. randomly he would flash the lights like it was a bomb and he made us all get under the desk and these desk had a connecting chair and it was very hard. maybe cuz were all in ninth grade and were bigger than these kids!!!

  • I can't imagine that the "Duck and Cover" method would do much in a nuclear attack.

  • COLD WAR SUCKS !

war on terror sucks too !

But "Prison break" sucks even more !

  • lmfao

  • "just like we're ready for many other dangers that are around us all the time"

  • Remember, kids. If you see a monkey swinging around with dynamite tied to a branch, he's a suicide bombing terrorist!

  • where can i find more funny old videos like this one? I've looked everywhere!

  • youtube?

  • LOL

  • The duck and cover position gives you a better vantage to kiss your ass "good bye."

  • agreed.

  • I remember this as a boy in school. I had no idea what the Atom Bomb was but they talked about it all the time. I remember the air raid sirens going off for testing. It was a real fear. I was scared to go to bed at night as I might sleep through the flash. It was a scary time not knowing if the bomb would drop

  • I watched this after listening to the Lewis Black comedy sketch. "Rules of Enragement" track 10, Homeland Security

  • I have to laugh at the duck and cover in the bus. A nuclear blast would topple it.

  • But I'm not a turtle :(

  • Damn I never new you can survive an atomic blast. I live in NYC so i'll definately be ready to "Duck and Cover"

  • well...basically, this video is telling me that by having my back turn to a radioactive explosion, i'll be safe? yay...i feel safer now *fucking douches*

  • Saver than rubbing your face in fallout.

  • HOLY SHIZ!

    I AM 100% EDUCATED!

  • I Wonder How Many Times He Said..." Duck And Cover!"

  • what a mean monkey

  • kids, i said smile!

  • lol this was made during the Cuban Missle crisis

  • ata boy tony!

  • its sooo fuzzy ..grrrr

  • Wow...this is (sorry For my laguage) BULL****!

  • Well, what would you want to tell fifth graders? "If you see a flash, your skin with fall off in clumps if you're still alive?"

  • yeah, I would probably freak...a lot.

  • I would be under the desk during air raid drills, thinking--is this going to protect me from flying glass, from the building falling in, from fire? uh, no, no and no.

--It was 3rd grade. even we knew how stupid this all was.

stdrange--those people protected from the brunt, did they still get very sick, etc? or were they really spared a lot of personal damage?

  • "Just duck and cover and kiss your ass goodbye!!!" We have enough bombs with 20 times the power and that could cover the entire surface of the earth several times over causing the genicide of almost everything on Earth. Duck and cover against that. I dare you...

  • and remember to put plastic sheeting and duct tape on your windows to protect you from terrorists with nerve gas.

i also like the line "we MUST obey

  • fuck that, im running twords the bomb.

  • "Do what Bert the turtle does."

How can I when I don't have a f--ing shell attached to my torso?!

  • i love that clip!!!! its so fucking awesome!!!!! Duck, and cover!

  • wut teh fack...worse than reefer madness lol.

  • sunburn??? i guess they didn't make duck and cover films for us colored children.

  • why does this remind me of "don't copy that floppy"?

  • good luck surviving a nuck by ducking under a desk lol

  • I think Bloom County had a strip satirizing this nonsense; in it Opus said "When you see the flash it is time to bend over and kiss your butt goodbye."

  • I just watched this in my history class yesterday. It was so funny! LOL

  • Yes, as we all know, a turtle can survive a nuclear holocaust!

  • now common people, you all know that a news paper is the best defence against a nuclear explosion.

  • Might seem infantile but the advice is good, flying debris is pretty much the only thing you can defend yourself against if you have little time to react.

  • true. very true.

  • lol I'd like to see a kid's face when he/she gets up and realises that the city is a smoldering mess!"oh i guess government doesn't know everything, does it?i understand now why my daddy called them a bunch of fuckers..."Too bad yer daddy is a pile of ash by know Muahahaha!

  • They only forgot about telling the kids important facts, like:It won't be over with a flash;at least half of the city would be gone;a tablecloth won't save you;and not only the windows but the whole bus will be flying trough the air;you can't run away from radiation.

  • but you lose weight at least!

  • ok how come when tony goes to duck and cover ... no one else does

  • lol i watched this in my history class

  • what the, how the hell can a newspaper save you........this really shows how much the government really cares

a freak-in random newspaper can save your life

  • the government is trying to help by making you feel safe, regardless of whether its true or not. mmm how reassured i feel just watching this.

  • that school that those kids went into would be pure ash afterwards lol

  • Excellent piece of propaganda. They just leave out the part where you get vaporized if you are within about 5+ miles of the detonation.

  • We sure can learn alot from that generation. If only the passengers on the planes that flew into the twin towers had kept there selt belts fastened they'd be here to tell the tell today.

  • so true

  • even if you survive the initial blast you will probably die of radiation poisioning from the water/air/food. Or have nasty cancer.

  • Actually if you look at Hiroshima, the survivors were the ones that happened to be behind a thick cement wall or something.

  • yes a thick cement wall, not a 10th of an inch thick newspaper!!

  • there were no survivors

  • yes all of japan was killed, in fact the people living in japan are actually ancestors of americans

  • The Americans bombed two cities not all of Japan!!! There were survivors all over Japan, just not in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. There for the people living in Japan are not ancestors of the Japanese-Americans.Now in regards to the film...I cant believe that they fed people this line of shit!!!Duck and cover would do nothing in a blast, unless you were far, far, far away from it.They still feed you this line of shit in the military too. They told us that ponchos could save our lives in an A-bomb blast!

  • Have you ever been to Hiroshima? I have. The Hiroshima bomb was about 10-20 times smaller than today's bombs. Less than a kilometer out, there were still survivors. Those survivors lived because they were either underground or BEHIND CONCRETE WALLS, thus avoiding the full brunt of the explosion. Thus "duck and cover" gets kids behind something that can absorb the impact, which would have in fact saved many lives in the case of a nuclear attack during that time.

  • the kids at 4:19 looked annoyed by the siren...

  • duck and cover, then go outside to the playground and MELT!!

  • fuck that, i did that and now im dead!

  • Yeh, yeh!

Back then they also told us that by the 1980's we'd be raising our children on the moon. :D

  • TURTLES WILL TAKE OVER WORLD THN!!

  • 0:20 kill a good monkey

2:35 if duck n cover works thn how come tree disinegrates?

    6:11 Die Patty!

    6:50 Ouch

7:30 so the driver dies? rely fair

    8:00 NEWSPAPER?! ROFL

8:27 kid turns round and picks nose

  • movie303, a newspaper actually would help, because its white, and it reflects light retard...

  • you cant be that stupid, THE FUCKIN RADIATION FROM THE BLAST ALONE, WOULD KILL YOU, NEWSPAPER OR NO NEWSPAPER...RETARD!!

  • And don't forget around 8:15, the guy jumps off the tractor and "ducks and covers"...all while he probably was so startled, he forgot to turn off his tractor motor? LOL what an anal video, in terms of sense. but a hoot to watch.

  • Word Bert.

  • Lol! If you see a bright light now, do the icky shuffle and say: "Th-Th-Th-Th-Thats all, folks!"

  • ha ha ha

  • back then they were told that so of course they believed it. the amerikan media shitted in everyones brains just like they do now. why is that so hard to believe. i cant believe u think a terrorist attacked us on 9/11. its what your told

  • the "duck and cover" wasnt cold war per se but a remnant of the days of the big one WW2. However, they never told you about the fact youd get fried by the radiation so youd just better bend over and kiss yer arse goodbye if you saw the flash.

  • Oh course, how stupid we were! Millions of people never died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was all just to scare us. Soviet Russia never detonated the H-bomb, its probably just primitive cgi. Cuba never planned to have missile silo's placed right next to USA which could strike within half-an-hour with no warning. It was all just elaborate lies by the government.

Actually I think you'll find that its YOU who's been brainwashed by conspiracies, if there was any truth in them they'd be proven!

  • If you lay very still, the atom bomb might just miss you. LMAO, yes even a newspaper may protect you, wtf?!!!

  • turns out that alpha radiation cannot propagate through the thin layer of dead skin cells that cover your skin, however exposure is till ill advises, though since implosion type nuclear bombs and new fusion bombs realease alpha beta and gamma radiation, which can carry charged particles into your bodies and ionize various biomolecules. That's bad

  • ahhh a flash of light wat must i do *omg how sad* duck and cover

  • Lol Betty's a skank :3

  • "If you see that light Duck and Cover" WRONG! If you see that light you are going to DIE! No matter WHAT! You may die from the light or you will die from the Shock Wave!

  • That aboy tony ha ha like laying on the ground will help you it would friken destroy the whole world duh

  • Lol, throw yourself of the tractor! Thatta boy! I like the song though...

  • You have GOT TO be kidding me. Seriously. Did people in the 50's not have their brains fully functioning?

Yes, an atomic blast may blow away houses and trees and cars but if you duck and cover than you will be safe.

I wonder if people went around with flashlights and cameras with flash pranking people back then.

  • You would have to live back then to really understand. Our parents believed what our government told them, when they would only have had to think back to a few years earlier, to Hiroshima and Nagasaki to know what was going to happen, so why didn't they? Why didn't anyone try to stop the testing, try to do something about the Cold War and the threat to the world? I was only a kid, this question never occurred to me then.

  • "we must obey the civil defense worker"

  • a newspaper can help you from a bad burn, hilarious.

if a nuke ever fall's on my city at least I'll be ready for it now, I won't have a slow agonising death thanks to this movie.thank you bert

  • That theme's got nothin' on Sha-boom sha-boom. Ah, those Crew Cuts could brighten up anyone's day!

  • Ah the classic, Duck and Cover, everyone loves Burt.

can you say if we duck and cover when Nukes are falling, we're all going to die a horrible flaming death

  • Damn, the people in Hiroshima have not seen this film. I am sure nobody would have died...

  • My mother had to see this film when she was a kid, and she told me that her teacher said, "That's right, children. Duck, cover... and kiss your @$$ goodbye." :)

  • My world history teacher said that when he was a kid and the lady got pissed

  • Man, those catchy 50's jingles can sell anything...

  • I agree completely! lol

  • Huzzah!
