The issues involved evoke a strong feeling of ambivalence: it's hard to empathize with the villagers' jubilation, knowing that their arches come at the expense of vulnerable species. At the same time, I hope they can find a way to continue their traditions sustainably. I assume farming bromeliads is out of the question? That would seem to be the most obvious solution.
