Number 4 is, indeed, the cleanest of Star Trek films. There's no violence, no sex, and the language is very mild. Suggested MPAA rating: PG for some scenes of sci-fi action, mild language and thematic elements.
@StarshipMaxima Horner does have the best track record of the composers, I'd agree (I definitely like him better than Jerry Goldsmith's efforts), but given his affinity for leitmotifs, I think Horner only really does his best scoring when there's a clear antagonist in the plot like Khan in II, the Queen in Aliens, or the British in Braveheart. Voyage Home is more like a disaster movie; the probe does some damage, sure, but it acts more like a timer than an obstacle, if that makes sense.
Maybe it's just because it's been so long, but for some reason, I remember this theme being longer. It felt more like an overture than just scoring the credits. So, it's really surprising to see a runtime of less than 3 minutes. Still awesome, of course, just surprised seeing the actual, factual length.
@watarukannuzuki I'd bet it was the theme over the end titles. That has the opening theme put together with a bit of other stuff that didn't make it into the opening.
There's a difference for using the same theme in one franchise and just lifting a score you did for an unrelated film. And the music for Star Trek IV still sucked.
@StarshipMaxima Leonard Nimoy says in the DVD that Horner was asked to come back, but declined. Nevertheless, Rosenman's score was probably a better match for this film, and frankly, I like it better.
@StarshipMaxima I think Rosenman's score fit this movie perfectly. I'm sure Horner would have done a good job, though. In any case, Horner didn't want to score this film, and it might have turned out better for it.
WORST Star Trek Movie Theme ever. Borrows to heavily from his "Lord of the Rings" score and, even worse, Leonard Rosemans music for Robocop II borrows to much like this crap.
But I'll leave with one nice thing to say: It makes the music for J.J. Abrahms atrocity less annoying.
@GIRlovesWaffles Lots of composers borrow elements from past films they composed. Hell James Horner has done that plenty of times. Are you going to hate on Goldsmith using the same theme for the first and fifth films? Rosenman's theme fits perfectly for the movie.
Definately agree with regards to Nemesis, but I'm not so convinced about the Insurrection theme being anything less than first rate. Certainly it has a very different, more relaxed, feel compared to a lot of the Star Trek films - however, the theme fits perfectly the opening sequence of the film and really sets the scene. However if you don't like the opening credits, it's the fault of the film rather than Goldsmith, as he can only work with what he sees on screen!
1:14 sounds like music out of a Dynasty/Dallas soap opera, but the film was great fun. My favourite bit was the voice over prologue 'story so far' segment. And the bit where they fly toward the sun to go back in time.
The music at 1.14 (that sequence actually starts at 1:04) could uses the "cycle of 5ths" as a progression - it's something that dates back to early classical music and, no doubt, you have heard similar sequences in almost all film music - it's very effective, though!
Credible for a Star Trek movie. It was a fun movie to. But the music was absolutely nowhere near as brillant as TMP, TWOK and TSFS, those music scores were majestic and powerful, this is a good track though.
How is it this score gets an oscar nod,but Horner never got any recognition at all? His,and Goldsmith's Star Trek V should have racked up a nomination in my opinion.
I think it's because how the score fits with the scenes in the movie, and they really fit perfectly. When your trying to insert this with other trek movies, it doesn't at all, but for this one, it's perfect. Horners still did very good job with the "Wrath of khan".
Horner did a good job in Star Trek II. However, he usually rips off the music of other composers. This score is really very original, and fits perfectly the character of the film. Just because the music has a certain humour to it doesn't make it a complete joke - it is very well structured and well thought out and, unlike other music for Star Trek Films (apart from II and VI) one really feels the music actually relates to the film. However, the orchestra don't do the music justice!!!
Fair enough! :) I don't really have a problem with Horner as a composer (although he should be shot for writing the love song from Titanic!). Hell, I'd love to be able to write music the way he can, and he's done so much good stuff! I guess I just kinda feel sorry for Rosenman - he was always going to have a harder time being in the shadow of two greats (Horner & Goldsmith). Mind, Cliff Eidelman doesn't suffer with the same criticism of his ST VI score..but it is VERY good!
i hear ya ... love song from Titanic is a totally different Horner than Wrath of Khan.
A friend of mine actually ended up putting an audio system in Horner's Park Ave apartment in NYC and met him on several occasions. says he's a really good guy.
Has the gold and platinum albums from Braveheart, Apollo 13, and Titanic all over the walls.

wouldve been better off using TMP march or the theme from the last two movies, this one sounds too heroic for my tastes
