  • Dat Snare. I would do unspeakable things to have it

  • Now that we've had a few years to let it settle in... dammit I miss Lopez. Axe is a great drummer, but Lopez was out of this world. I would kill all you guys for a chance to hear what Heritage would sound with Lopez instead of Axe... ;)

  • While I like Axe and respect both Lopez and Axe, cause I know they're both excellent drummers, I still miss Lopez...he's such a superb drummer. I love his style...it's so smooth and at the same time brutal...but sill delicate...

  • I've heard tons of ghost notes in my life, but only Lopez' ghost notes make my skin shiver. Lopez = rhythm in person.

  • @schmorganic , if you really love ghost notes, you should totally check out Travis Orbin. HE WILL ORBINATE YOU!

  • He played a Tama Starclassic on this album and subsequent tours, so it's most likely a Starphonic. It has the sound of a metal snare, hope that helps!

  • Seeing Martin play this with such ease (kinda one handed, too!) just makes me want to quit drumming.

  • @SideWays8Productions Funny, it inspires me to become a better drummer :) I'll probably never get to Lopez's level but I can jolly well try

  • Lopez wasn't fired. Go and watch the Axenrot interview vid on here if you want proof. He left because of panic attacks.

  • in the full video, there is a song, playing in the background.. İts on probably '20.00' minutes or one minute ago from that .. do you know waht song this is..?? please help..

  • Does anyone know what kind of snare Lopez is using here? It sounds great.

  • Does anyone know what kind of snare drum he is playing here? I read that he played Premier I believe.

  • Honestly could watch him play for eternity

  • i love his drumming on this album, its fucking genious!!

  • absolutely brilliant drummer. up there with Peart for sure!

  • Comment removed

  • @bassblair11 Yes, but its not overly indulgent like I feel that Peart tends to be... maybe thats just me, and maybe because Opeth's music is more emotional, but for me, Martin is the only drummer that I describe as being emotional, a word I usually reserve when describing music for the guitar, violin, piano, or vocals. Martin's fills in harlequin forest during the slower-tempo "bridge" in the middle of the song is one of the most amazing drumming I've ever heard in my life. Gives me goosebumps

  • @koolmaaan I'm saying he's up there with Peart as far as technicality goes. As far as emotion, it could be more of an opinion that anything. Whatever gives you goosebumps and such. He is a brilliant drummer. His work in "Beneath the Mire" is just fantastic. As well, Pearts work in "Time stands still" is amazing. Either way, any drummer worth their stick is influenced by Peart, and if they can live up to the likes of him, or surpass him, then they were obviously very inspired.

  • @bassblair11 I won't disagree with anything you said except for the assertion that every great drummer has been influenced by Peart; not to say that there haven't been manythat have been, because that simply isn't true; but we don't definitively know if Martin was heavily influenced by him, or inspired by him to play.

  • Genio con sangre uruguaya...no hay forma.

  • uuh those ghost notes on the snare is hot

  • "That that sounded great"

    "Yes"

"... Hey that really sucked! What the hell are you doing?"

    Hahahaha just great

  • Can someone please tell me what movie/video this clip is from?

  • @BeefTorpedoes Hey, it is on the Ghost Reveries cd/dvd combo.

  • @BeefTorpedoes Dude your username kicks ass!

  • @donbehatin Haha thanks, man!

  • does he speak swedish?

  • @milleralive Yes

  • @milleralive yes

  • martin i love you man i everything i now in drums is from you i was listening a dvd 5 times the day.......and i was wontering omg what am i doing??????

i wish you were stil to oreth

  • what interview is it from? I mean the beginning, when Akerfeldt speaks.

  • @CaptainKrys its from the making of ghost reveries documentary on the bonus disc of the special edition.

  • @jimmybush12

    Thanks=)

  • @CaptainKrys It's from their Ghost Reveries documentary "Beyond Ghost Reveries"

  • hey Martin is active again

he's in 2 bands ''Fifth to Infinity'' and ''Soen''

  • Why is he not in Opeth anymore?

  • @RightHookJoker

from what ive heard he wanted to go and work with something more along the lines of his own music, but then he was having health issues. so hes been out of the loop for a while

  • @RightHookJoker he lost the plot mate.

  • Plain and simple...he was too damn good and his body couldn't keep up with it. Being God has it's disadvantages after all.

  • Helt värdelöst faktiskt....

  • Lopez is a fantastic drummer and I'll surely miss his sound. However Axe is also a great drummer, and I do believe Mikael himself noted that he writes the drum parts in an interview.

  • @arsnikdrums really? mikael wrote all that lopez played?

  • @stiffaction not at all...the drummers have some creativity, Mike has final say but most of the time Lopez and Axe write the drum parts and submit them to mike for final approval

  • @arsnikdrums Nah, Akerfeldt definitely does not write the drum parts. He has final say in what they are. But you can defintely tell he doesn't.

Example 1: Listen to Master's Apprentices/Demon of the Fall (AKA. Lopez's fast and heavy drumming)

Example 2: Listen to Heir Apparent/Lotus eater (AKA. Axenrot's fast and heavy drumming).

They sound nothing alike. And if Akerfeldt did the writing there would probably be more of Lopez's tendencies in Axenrot's playing.

  • @Nubnut Yeah, that definitely sounds right to me, I'm just going by what I thought I heard, thanks for the clearing up though man.

  • weird when they're talking Swedish. sounds like they suddenly lost the ability of speach or something.

  • and i thought i was the only one thinking that lol.

  • C.mon Martin ..come back with Opeth......we miss you!!!!!

  • I can imagine how horrible that disc would have been with Axentrash.

Thank god we have plenty of discs to enjoy Martin Lopez' greatness on.

  • @donangry Axentrash?!? Are you stupid? You can prefer Lopez, but Axenrot is way far from trash, he is a great drummer. I was prefering Lopez too, but i can enjoy a drummer without thinking that other are trash. Maybe growing up a little bit? Or maybe you are too "metal" to have a brain working properly?

  • @groscaca69 If I were "too metal", then I would actually prefer Axentrash. Another kid without a musical ear replies and gets shot down.

  • @donangry so you didn'T understand what i mean by "too metal" didn't you? For my musical ear, i have play viola from 4 years old to 6 than switch to cello, i am 27. I come from a musical family, my mother, grand father and grand grand father are and have been professional musician. I also play guitar since i am 15. Again, a judgement of failure....

  • @groscaca69 Yes, and you said that my liking lopez meant I was "too metal". When in reality if you had a musical ear you'd realize that Lopez has more of a jazz feel to most of his playing and Axentrash is a full on metal drummer. I prefer the softer side of Opeth, which Lopez heavily shaped with his drumming. Axentrash plays like a machine, which isn't what drumming about. Not tasteful drumming anyways.

I'm sorry but I don't care about your family line so I didn't read any of that garbage.

  • @donangry "be too metal" was a reference to the attitude of seeing everything in black and white like "that is the best thing on earth, everything else suck like shit". That is the teenagers shitty metal attitude. Unfair judgement.

As for the ear, base on your opinion, Michael Akerfeldt don'T have a great ear? LOL

As i already said in my first post, i prefer Lopez too, but saying that Axenrot is trash is just RETARDED. Is it too complicated for you or what?

  • @groscaca69 Damn what I said sailed clear over your miscreant skull didn't it? You're to the point where you're replying for the sake of replying, without adding anything whatsoever. You're finished kid.

  • @donangry lol hahaha you really believe yourself don't you? personnally, the argument that based on what you have said, Michael Akerfeldt don't have a great ear just completely kill you.... i don't know how you do to reply after this...

  • @groscaca69 You might want to read what I said and while doing so note that I never said anywhere that Akerdeldt doesn't have a good ear. I said YOU don't have one. Like I said, you're so mad and incoherent now that you're going to reply just because you can't handle getting destroyed on the internet. Reply again with absolutely no content whatsoever though. If you need to then go ahead and put some words in my mouth to fuel your "argument", you don't seem to have one of your own.

  • @donangry lol, maybe you are not smart enought? If Michael play with Axenrot, i am pretty sure he don'T think he's trash... Anyway, you are too stupid to understand anything, that is incredible, but there is always a need for people to put gas in my car.

    So thank you!

  • lopez nr.1

  • OHHH GOD!!!! So many notes on the snare!!!

  • Lopez is better than axenrot sadly he left ...

  • why is he not in opeth nomore.?

  • Those ghosts notes make it.

    That snare sounds amazing.

  • so fucking sick

  • "That sounded great!"

    "Yes"

best response i've ever heard anyone say

  • lopez, i my opinion, is if not the best drummer on planet, one of the best. he has incredible feeling for rythm. and as mikael said in this documentary: he's born drummer. that part 0:14 - 0:22 is genius, and i've listened tone of DT and ,sorry but, i've never heard mike portnoy did something incredible like this.and that's just small peice of his work

  • @Chupoklon lopez is truly awesome.. but imo still not at the levels of haake, agren, duplantier, schalk, carey, mayer, colaiuta, weckl ..still.. what awesome footage \,,/

  • ye ...lopez was really good

  • Lopez!!! Where the hell are you now dude!!!???

  • @t00LuBe in a promising project called "Soen." Steve Digiorgio is in it as well!

  • aguante uruguay !!

  • MARTIN LOPEZ=GOD

  • now Lopez really find his way back!!!.. Listen Soen, it's brilliant, he had feel and groove again!!

  • no wonder he has a heroin problem you can't congratulate him on a good job!

  • This gives me goosebumps every time. LOVE LOPEZ

  • i can't possibly describe how much i like this video....

  • why did Lopez quit? They kicked him or something?

  • @dabearswisswe Started getting panick attacks and health problems. Who knows, Opeth got a lot bigger in that period and started playing a lot more tours. Maybe he just couldn't hang with the schedule...

  • man i miss him he brought so much groove to opeth. dark swedish feel with the south american thunder drumz.

  • Lopez is way better then axe cause he can groove hes one of the best metal drummers ever axe is alright but not as progressive as lopez yet axe does his for opeth

  • I do think that Lopez is a better "Opeth-drummer" than Axe, but Axe is one hell of a drummer too! He has an amazing technique, and he only used six hours recording the drum-tracks on Watershed too!

But I do miss Lopez, even though Axe does a very good job..

  • the snare on this album is kickassssss

  • A M A Z I N G

  • I love Lopez. and it sucks that he left. But axe is a great drummer too. maybe not the best for Opeth but him and Frederick are going to bring the band into a slightly different direction, which is a good thing (they are a progressive metal band after all)

  • This video is the reason why I think Lopez suits Opeth better than Axe does. What he plays there...just..can't be replicated..by any other drummer. His finesse, so to speak, in his playing and all the little details and all the little fills will always impress me.

Axe is, without a shadow of a doubt, a very good drummer. However I think he suits Bloodbath much better than Opeth.

  • @FeedThemCake Yeap, just listen to "Bastard son of God" and that's it ! He kicks ass in this band, no doubt.

  • i really like axenrot. i think he's a very technical drummer and he fits opeth TODAY very well.

but hearing him play some of the older songs i miss the feel of lopez. i hope he does well with his new(old) band.

  • nah you suck dv122.....

  • @dv122 What the fuck are you even going on about? You sound like a fucking idiot. Are you even thinking before you type things out? "LOLOLOLHURRR DICK PUSSY FAGGOT SHIT PISS FUCK" It's a random string of meaningless bullshit without a shred of logic. Also, wouldn't jacking off on another dudes face make YOU a faggot?

  • @Death666Doom20050 if i jack off onto another mans face that dont make me gay it makes the other person gay because hes the one getting the cum on his face. And why dont you mind your own business.

  • who knows the reason(s) why Martin Lopez quit the band? Everything seemed to go right then.

  • @jeromed2 Apparently he is/was suffering from a "disease" that just didn't allow him to play drums... I don't know if it's the same thing or kind of thing that happened to the original Immortal guitarist... suddendly couldn't even hold his guitar...

  • @6Pagan6hate6 He had a blood disorder (I can't remember the name of it) that caused him to suffer sudden and violent panic attacks. To the point of where he couldn't even function.

Unfortunately this happened at the beginning of the Ghost Reveries tour, and Mikael didn't want to cancel all the shows. So they had the grand-daddy of Death Metal drumming himself, Gene Hoglan, fill in for Lopez. Who eventually quit/was fired (it's debated as to what happened) and was permanently replaced by Axenrot

  • @Nubnut Thanks for the details man, I didn't even hear about the quit/fired debat before. Metal bands are a tough world isn't it ?! :) Gene Hoglan on drums... I didn't have the chance to see him play for Opeth, but he's definitely one of my best D.M drummer ever ! Strapping Young Lad 4ever!!! lol

  • @6Pagan6hate6 Ya, fun fact you can actually see Hoglan on the drums in the Grand Conjuration music video.

  • @Nubnut why was hoglan fired?

  • @1991ant1991 Sorry, I worded that weirdly. Hoglan wasn't fired. Lopez was.

Hoglan just filled in for a short time while they looked for another drummer (you can actually see Hoglan in The Grand Conjuration video)

  • @Nubnut what are you talking about.. Hoglan was only a replacement for a couple of shows in Jordan, and Lopez left the band after Ghost Reveries due to health problems... =.=

  • @Bashy14 That's pretty much exactly what I've said the last two times I've posted in this video. Can people not read anymore?

  • @Bashy14 you: "Hoglan wasn't fired. Lopez was." Lopez wasnt fired v_v

  • @Nubnut Lopez was never fired from Opeth. He left because of health reasons.

  • @dv122 you mad?

  • Lol you mad.

  • I wish Lopez was back his LATIN JAZZ IS FAR BETTER ORIGINAL THAN axe

  • I'm an avid Opeth fan, and I realy enjoyed the drumming onWatershed. Full of rudiments and other pleasing musical creativity

  • Axe is ok for basic death but he definitely cannot play Opeth properly. He's got no feeling nor the required creativity. You just have to listen to the last album to understand that simple fact. Where are the fills ? Where is the touch ?... I just got disappointed with this album...

  • I agree 100%.

I find it especially obvious when they play (live) older songs that Martin Lopez originally played, I just find it insufficient tbh :/

Although the guy they have now is a good metal drummer per say, I just don't think that he is good enough or even remotely as good as Martin Lopez.

  • Axe is a good metal drummer. That's it

Martin has the blues/jazz/classic progressive rock feel and was a better fit for Opeth

  • @6Pagan6hate6 u didnt like watershed?

  • @horny0donkey0 I actually didn't. I listened to it before its release (sorry, I wanted to hear it so bad!), then on the day of release (I even saw them guys at the show-case they gave in Amsterdam at the record shop, I was living there... anyway !) and I listened to it several time since then. Last time was a week ago and still... the drums parts are just "not enough" to make me feel the Opeth I loved years ago with "Still Life" & "Blackwater Park". And the songs are not that good anymore anyway

  • @6Pagan6hate6 Bam! Thank you! Finally someone else who gets it. No knock on Axe, he's a good guy and a very good drummer, but Martin was more than just a death metal drummer.....as you suggest, his drumming was incredibly creative.

  • @BlackRoseImmortal Yes! Stunningly creative! Axe is a great drummer and is fuckin brutal. However lopez is a great death metal drummer, and an "all around" drummer. I was amazed seeing this video. I have note seen much metal drummers like him around. I wonder why he is not credited for that!??

  • Hhahahaha... that was Mikael who said : That really sucked... ghaghaghghagha he is an idiot lol

  • Lopez is the Bestest, fuck Axe he sux

  • Martin Lopez is one of my two favorite drummers. The other is Mike Bordin (Faith no More/Ozzy). They each have a signature sound. Lopez adds such great feel to his beats. I'm learning to like Axe, but I love Lopez.

  • that was fucking awesome, what a great drummer

  • "ammm, Helt värdelöst faktiskt... Va gör du??"

    :D

  • omg where can i get the full vid?? :D

  • Why on earth is Akerfeldt looking up all the time in the beginning? It looks as if he's being interviewed by a Swedish 15 feet tall mountain troll or something...

  • Because he is sitting and the guy who interwievs is standing^^

  • I just couldn't stop laughing when I re-viewed the video this time with the "Swedish troll interviewer" in mind...

  • Love the feel Lopez had when playing in Opeth. Not just flash ;)

  • This has always been my favorite clip from the DVD. I miss Lopez being in the band. :(

  • is there any footage of lopez nailing this song live?

  • No, he left just after the GR recording, unfortunately =\

  • Do you know which it is in the last 2 seconds? It sounds quite interesting :)

  • This is an Afro Cuban rhythm... Martin is just simply amazing!!!

  • Who's Gene you guys are talking about? :o

  • Gene Hoglan I suppose, of SYL, Death and Dethklok fame

  • helt värdelöst faktist... vad gör du... :o)

  • what does faktist mean?

  • actually..

  • Lopez is incredible, end of discussion -- blows me away each time I watch footage of him

  • This looked like an audition.

  • Fitta bra! Cracked me up ( it means fucking good in Swedish)

  • Which DVD is this from?

  • Ghost Reveries Deluxe Edition Bonus DVD

  • es mi tio putacas dejense de hablar mierda que es un conchudo

  • They should have tried to keep Gene instead of Axenrot.

  • he is a thash drummer int he

  • Gene is an amazing drummer but his style doesn't suit Opeth... Lopez with his latin music influences was perfect, Gene is fast and accurate but he lacks... well, subtlety :D

  • Gene has groove too man. I'll admit it hasn't impressed me like Lopez's, but he definately has it.

Axenrot kinda has the same problem anyway, except gene is just slightly more tech.

  • When Loped came with Mendez to Sweden, the only thing they were inspired of was bands like Morbid Angel, death and black metal. Åkerfeldt has stated that, so the sentence "Lopez with his latin music influences" is simply incorrect, according to Mikael himself. I think he's a pretty good source.

  • @DanielAbbasi07

Possibly, but he sure as hell plays a lot of claves, such as the trademark Opeth-rhythm figure. And according to the Opeth site he sure listened to a lot of latin music and jazz.

  • Yeah, I agree, he definetly is a groovy player. Really a good style. I was just takling about his inspirations

  • So what? Did you heard what he played? You do not need any Latino stuff to play what your HEART dictates. You only have to be clever and open minded enough to play what the music asks for ( let it flow). On the other hand, he might not play latino, but of course latino music goes around his parents house while he was growing up. Something may have got stuck deep in his feel while playing. I am an all around drummer for 30 years, play all metal too, ´am Latino and a good source too. Peace!!! ;)

  • Of course. But, there is no right answer, it's just a matter of taste. Martin Lopez played more with a good latin feeling and of course i LOVE him. But I just prefer Axe couse he is more solid, even Mikael himself has stated that, and that's a pretty good source isn't it?

But again, we all appreciate what Lopez has done and what Axe are doing. If I have to pick one, I wouldn't definetly go for Axe, but they're both insanely good drummers, no question

  • is my uncle martin involved in this?

  • Axenrot is good - there's no doubt about it - but Lopez is Opeth's drummer. Sucks that he left.

  • @pineapplepeanuts Yeah man, Axe is far more suited to Bloodbaths style. I miss Lopez's absolutely satanic drum fills :/

  • @svbassist Not just his fills but his nuance and particular style. I see Axe try to replicate it but it just seems uh...flat I guess. He does metal, jazz, latin, the whole nine. That's what Opeth lost when he left.

  • Mr. Lopez is God!!! *u*

  • i agree, martin is much better than martin...

  • I vote for Martin. Martin just isn't that good.

  • Martin is better.

  • I personally prefer Martin to Martin and Martin...

  • I'm sorry but Martin is better than Martin.

  • vraiment un des meilleur drummer que j'ai eu l'occasion de voir , j'aime sa souplese des mouvement smooth!! Yeah

  • Martin Lopez's great drummer!!

    Te amo Martin!!!!!!!!!

  • I love that man! Te amo Martin!!!! :(

  • No he just missed the metronome tempo and kept playing I think :P and it ended up being out of tempo

  • Although he wad endorsed by Tama whole Ghost Reveries was being recorded, he decided to use his Premier kit to record the cd. You can find the info on the Opeth site under the studio journals

  • Axenrot is
