  • Oh, come on! I was kidding. In the first comments I replied that I recorded it from TV... :)

  • @matboss72 hilarious!

  • pretty sure if I got backstage with Mayer.....I wouldn't be videotaping him playing a song on guitar.....but then again, I'm a shameless groupie. I'd probably be playing guitars with him and geeking out, actually :) But I do love this vid. Thanks for sharing!

  • This is so easy ! I CAN DO IT

  • Dude, this potato has the best quality yet!

  • where was this filmed?

  • @kpierre221 I was with him in the backstage of Where the Light Is gig...

  • @matboss72 Looks a bit like a video of a video.. badass tho

  • @matboss72 your one lucky person!!!

  • I've been watching this over and over again for the past 2 hours...

  • I didn't recognize him at first !

then somewhere in the end I was like "I'm a fucking idiot....." *facepalm*

  • @finnguitarman I thought the same ... I was like... this guy's good ... OH it's John Mayer .. !

  • @finnguitarman haha I just recognized him right away from his guitar's look.

  • honestly.. I'd have sex with that guy..

  • HONG KONG like u John Mayer =)

  • I died a little death watching this. Incredible.

  • I wish my guitar sounded like that

  • this had no artist name in the title....from the title i thought any random guy is playing a acoustic version of the song...then i clicked and i was like whoa!!!!!!

  • @syndgr834 aren't you happy about the surprise? :)

  • @matboss72 surprised!!!....I'm freaked out...the only thing i did is take out my guitar and learn the song after hearing this....thanks a lot for posting this.....this is priceless(i know for everything else there is mastercard:-p).........

  • @matboss72 i fucking am :))))

  • @matboss72 actually made my day ;)

  • @syndgr834 Dude me too!

  • now i have to find jwertel2's comment

  • where is this from????

  • one question, did he prepared this stuff or improvised the solo? i love this guy

  • Haha, I was just about to tell you to let me know if you figured it out, but I worked it out on my own. Dm, A13 (a string, 13th fret) G10, A10 G9, E6 A8 DG5 A6... Ha, um, not sure if you understood that but just watch him and listen. A lot of it is strumming while muting the strings that aren't being voiced.

  • @jbnumba1 could you tell me the time he play that? somehow i dont see it

  • Where is this from? don't think I didn't notice that little play button in the bottom left corner!

  • Damn. I bet he does all kinds of right with those hands.

  • The strum pattern after 2:02 is brilliant

  • Amazing acoustic, he keeps all filled it's great to listen!

  • in the beginning part, is he just strumming while palm muting?

  • @JYLEDH yea kinda but his hand isn't really on the base of the guitar fully

  • @JYLEDH He's actually muting with his left hand. The only notes that sound are the ones that form part of his riff; rest of them are blocked out by his left hand, not the right.

  • love the guitar, love the player.

  • if you don't think the solo is harder than the verse you have some things to work on for you rguitar playing

  • I wonder if this was before, after, or during an intermission of Where The Light Is.

  • Any chance someone is able to tab this or has already tabbed it?

  • @veganpartisan Learn it by ear. Stop asking for TABs.

  • I just crapped in my pants at 2:02

  • @finnguitarman haha me too

  • Holding a pick while your picking with your fingers - or strumming - is common practice, as most of you know. The thing with John is he does it well, so well it looks like he's pulling rabbits out of thin air. Forget the hat.

  • does he use a pick?

  • @colinL9

    are you jokin? sure.

  • @colinL9 Yeah, he does. But you never know with John, he's got some way of hiding the pick in is hand so that he can play both with and without the pick in the same song. I have no idea how he does it though, I would love to know^^

Though in this video he's just holding the pick between his thumb and index finger :)

  • I thought I was watching a cover...then I thought damn this kid is really good.... Then I thought wow he sounds just like John Mayer... Then I realized I'm a dumbass... Great job John

  • Find a better. John's too much.

  • Trying to get the timing down, are the positions different?

  • @AttackVlogs no, most of the song is exactly the same as the studio version except that instead of picking the strings seperately, he strums all the strings while muting the ones he doesnt use. 'Who Did You Think I Was' has a similar technique, or uhm RHCP 'Can't Stop'.

  • backstage of WHERE THE LIGHT IS?

  • AMAZING

  • Proof that John Mayer doesn't need autotune.

  • the amazing thing is how he's playing the sick riff and singing at the same time.

  • Love it! He's just great. To play the guitarparts clean enough is difficult, and what the hell.. and add singing... and perform it in front of thousands of people. Well, only John can. :)

Check out my guitarvideos at my channel, and let me know what you think!:)

  • Jesus Howareyoudoingthat Christ @ 2:20

  • i really dont get what hes doing when he says, we never gonna win the world . and the stuf right after it. i found the tones , but in another position and if i use the same posi as he does it sound diffrent, someone help?

  • @pumukellll Your guitars are tuned differently, it seems. You can either tune yours to match him or just play it with the same notes on your guitar. If you really just want to follow him, you should just tune your guitar so that the strings sound the same as his. It's a bit of a hassle but *shrug* not THAT big.

  • @milleniumsamurai

hey do you know the version where he play with the old man and the slide in the background?

  • @pumukellll I've seen the video. Are you asking if I know the chords? or have a TAB?

  • @milleniumsamurai

the chords would be helpfull, im able to play the song just this last part (2:50) at the vid in star lounge ( with the fat man and the slide) is the thing i cant figure out :D

  • @pumukellll Are you looking at the slide guy's hands or John's? Btw, what did you decide to do about retuning your guitar?

  • @milleniumsamurai

for the hand of john :D

um a friend helped me and now everyh´thing fine with the guitar, i wont return it ;D

  • is he muting?

  • could some musical genius make alesson for this version or try to figure it out,im trying and as soon as a have aversion i like ill posst it, but im sure it wont be accurate cause im not a very good guitarist. i would be very happy if many people try and we put our best in one pot and get a good version, pm me if you try

  • Fall in love with every song of John Mayer

  • Half the people listen to this song without realizing how amazing the lyrics are

  • If anyone has a legit reason for why this video has dislikes, i'd very much like to hear them.

  • @BlitzCup i love the video but a reason some may not. firstly, em....yea

  • @jwertel2 Practice is everything my friend. You're not the only one on this planet who has a dream.

  • The best!! That solo section is pure porn

  • And there are people that still think that he isn't a good musician... :/

  • his arrangement for the guitar solo on this version is incredible. So clean without any distortion or other instruments.

  • I love the solo - it's ridiculous.

I put up a cover if neon if you wanna look, people always think neon is his hardest but I think playing belief like this takes much more musical ability

  • @manixander yeah youre right. You have to practice to make i perfect and learn it by looking and using your ears to learn if there isnt any tab of jm's song. I learnt this vid by looking and listening and neon too.

  • Comment removed

  • Finally learned the song!!(:(:(:

  • @onixtheone I'm working on learning it, got the main riff down.

  • @traviswolfemusic Nice bro(:

  • You don't need tabs, I agree with @jwertel2 you have a good quality video and the sound is good enough to hear the notes, stop being lazy and use your ears.

  • Can't believe I haven't seen this one before :O

    This is just awesome

  • How does he do 2:23???

  • Comment removed

  • why would you need tabs? he's playing it right there.

  • gosh i love this guy and i'm not gay though :D

  • By far the best John Mayer video I've ever seen!!

  • Just listen to the part from 2:02 until 2:40.

I'm not a guitarplayer but that part is just sick to play! (or am I wrong?)

    He's a god !

  • @superrdavid oh yeah he is! and its sick as hell to play

  • @superrdavid If you can get the hang of verse of the song, that part from 2:02 aint as hard as it may look.

  • @Nickioo1990 The solo is definitely harder than the verse.

  • @MarsyasX1 I don't think so

  • @MarsyasX1 ok.. i didn't experience it that way atleast :)

  • @superrdavid believe it or not the verse in the hardest part of the song. After you learn it try singing while you're playing ;)

  • @CrazyCow500 so so so true

  • @superrdavid Yeh, this guy is at a level where the guitar is just an extension of his fingers..Still he is modest to the point of saying "I'm not a great guitar player" (said when he was jamming with BB King ^^)

  • @superrdavid you can hear the heavy Stevie Ray Vaughan influence through that section. Have a listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan - Testify (unplugged) and you'll see what I mean

  • @superrdavid im not the best player either david, but once you dominate JM technique, i mean using the thumb and all that, and kind of using al fingers separately u realize its not that hard. You'll obviously need a bit of practice but its more a thing of rhythm.

  • @andrekzinho25 yes you're right. I can play about 20 JM songs and they may take awhile to learn but it'll all be easy... except for the solos of course. Those take time haha. But I can play how he plays, even for those odd ones like Something's Missing and In Your Atmosphere.

  • is amaizing mainly because was he that created this

  • @superrdavid no your not wrong. that was awesome!

  • Co za asy!

  • @ajensson hahaha, didnt expect that to happen xD

  • wish there were more videos of him chillin and playn acoustically like this, it was like i was hangin with him

  • that...was fucking awesome

  • SESLİ GÜLDÜM ZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ANAN BİZDE XD

  • PİÇ. Ananı sikiyim senin orospu çocuğu. Nası çalıyo ya. Amına kodumun yarması. Ananın amcığını götünden sikeyim. O gitarın tellerini sikinin deliğinden geçireyim orospu çocuğuuu. Hadi görüşürüz.

  • i wish have bigger hands...to make the solo!

  • @Marsoki his hands are quite big actually but he's a tall guy.. I met him one time at a bar and shook his hand his hand nearly swallowed up my hand and I have been told I have quite big hands lol

  • @Marsoki or maybe try a smalest guitar

  • actually, this version is on where the light is! the bluray bonus feature... you have to download it... its available in HQ its awesome, there is this 200 guitars video too, really great...

  • @jwertel man , your coment was the best on the whole youtube history.

  • is that john mayer ??

  • @soullesplain of course it is :) no one plays it that good :P

  • 1:24 pause, look up , lol

  • Did anyone notice this video was shot during the Where The Light Is concert? Look at his clothing. Also, the little intro to "Who did you think i was?" in the DVD is probably played before or after this!

  • @puchalaka You're right. They should have included these clips on the 'Special Features' menu or something.

  • ...like they're stupid for not knowing that a song "had a mixolydian instead of a minor scale over the 4 of the progression," like seriously. Cut people who want tabs slack; they like music but not like you do; but the point is they like it enough to wanna play some of it and that should be respected not pitied. Again, sorry for ranting waayyy too damn long! Hahah long story short; JM FTW!

  • Sorry for going on so long but its upsetting when someone who just wants to learn a tune for the heck of it they get criticized by a musician and 21 supporters because they didn't follow the course they took into music. Something I noticed; and this doesn't apply to all, but some musicians look at people who don't know music other than something they listen to as ignorant. They really treat them inferior...

  • Not everybody is interested in learning about music theory. Sometimes they simply want to learn how to play a particular song. Some people just don't have that musical ear and need a little more guidance (tabs) to do so. All that matters is the respect they're paying to the artist in wanting to learn the song.

  • @mihchul

Couldn't have said that any better. I pieced my music knowledge partially from tabs and partially from reading into music theory. I know what I know today from looking into both and making connections; things just start to click once you get into playing. But you're 100% right in saying that not everyone has the time to delve deep (and music theory is very deep) into music theory. There's so much to know and some people just want to learn a song because they like the tune and/or artist

  • @mihchul

...The people who gave jwertel2's comment thumbs are probably people who've spent years learning music and the theories behind it; which I respect but you have to give those who spent years learning something else slack when they want tabs to learn a song they like. @jwertel2 I don't think you should slam those who want tabs for a song. Idk if you're a musician or just a "joe," but for "joes" who have careers and want to just learn a song they like on the side they should be able to

  • @jwertel2

Idk if you spent your life learning music to make that your career or if you just really love music enough to where your talented enough to play by ear but some people really just didn't follow the same course or just might not be capable of what ear training requires. They probably spent their time learning a profession they turned into a career. So if they want tabs to learn something on the side they shouldn't be criticized. I love music and I've gotten good enough to not rely

  • this video should be million views

  • haha im sitting here thinking -- damn, this kid nailed it!! o wait, that's actually john haha .. noone can play it like he does, with possibly the exception of james hersey

  • If we don't need tabs, I guess we don't need to look up lyrics as well.. and sheet music for that matter.

  • He doesn't need a band at all

  • I can't belive it, looks like he strums just normal. Is he using a pick?

  • Best cover of this song ever! The dude even looks and sings like John Mayer!

  • @lindquisty That's because HE'S John Mayer :)

  • @lindquisty hahaha are you serious? that is john mayer you dumbass

  • amazing guitar player!

  • I'm sick of people asking for tabs for every music video on youtube. use your ears and eyes and figure it out. if it's too hard then you should be working on other things in music first

  • @jwertel2 u can always skip those comments. if u cant understand that people who play music can be at any level, from beginner to music pros, u have something wrong.

  • @Sciaracastro I don't like to be a youtube hater, but to me tabs represent an easy way out for people who don't care to put the work into learning a piece of music. I don't believe tabs are helpful, regardless of skill. Of course someone at a beginner level may want to play a song that is out of their skill range, but isn't that how it should be? One should practice and work hard to eventually get to that level skill level and be proud of his/her hard work. I think that shows good musicianship.

  • @jwertel2 I use tabs for playing my music all the time. Mostly I play a song by ear, but sometimes when things are hard to hear I use tabs to get it right. In a song like this tabs shouldn't be needed, but if you have a Tommy Emmanuel song, I realy can't go without em. Tabs are perfectly fine, but they should be used as support and never as the sole guideline for a piece. For me it doesn't matter how you learn a song,, the final result is what counts.

  • @jwertel2 then music sheets are shit?

  • @Sciaracastro sheet music with actual notation is fine of course, but my point is that someone who relies on tabs is less likely to ever learn much music theory and be able to read sheet music. Like Ccbroo said below, for some people they can be useful as support, I'll agree to that I suppose. I think my initial comment was provoked by the myriad of tab request for john mayer songs that are simple enough to figure out even for a beginner / intermediate. I hope our debate is in good spirit

  • @jwertel2 i've been studying jazz harmony and music in general for years now, but tabs are always useful and they are at every level of knowledge :)

even when i was still a beginner (wait, i still am! :D) i learnt so much from tabs :)

btw, good spirit is all around :P

  • @jwertel2 true word, this video gives you an excellent look on the fretboard, who needs tabs for this video isn't ready to play mayer

  • @jwertel2 Seriously??.. If this annoys you then i and i'm sure alot of others pity you.
