Can someone please explain these lyrics to me? It's not often I have trouble coming up with at least ONE interpretation for lyrics, but mother of God, what do these mean :o?

"Don't look back you'll turn to salt" sounds like a reference to a story in the old testament. The start sounds like a ghost watching his own funeral possibly died through smoking. The end sounds as if it was all a dream, maybe he's seen his death. He appreciates life, but why the biblical reference? Was it a dream? HALP D:

@bannanatree Don't get too caught up on the literal; it seems to me that this song is not necessarily a story, but a message. He's saying, nothing lasts--everything fades, we all die. But too many take life for granted before it's gone (like the ghost), so he says: Be grateful for this life. Take every opportunity to enjoy it fully. Don't get hung up on the past ("look back"), and become aware of the life you're living ("wake up") so you don't miss out on it. That's what I get out of it, anyway.

First the example of a ghost who misses his life, then focusing on his own life, which has its troubles at the moment - but at least he's alive, and he's never going to take that for granted. "Daylight will wash away. It's going to fade, yeah it will fade, and the darkness will take it's place. It's going to come, yeah it will come." Daylight = life and darkness = death. He knows he's going to die.

The rest of the lyrics are basically celebrations of life.

Totally agree with you apart from the 'dark carpet' bit. I tend to think that he's referring to the empty, lifeless void surrounding each of our lives, before birth and after death. The sudden streak of white on this carpet is the consciousness we all experience for the tiny flash of time in which we feel.
