I have a friend who is not well emotionally and she went to jail and was held in a freezing cold cell all weekend and had to sleep on a steel slab with no pillow or blanket and had to ask for toilet paper every time she had to pee. She was hungry and cold and terrified and on top of that had to deal with the other screaming and yelling inmates who bullied her for her illness. She had her period and was in agony with her menstrual cramps and was denied pain killers or maxi pads.
@commensense007 I heard The main reason given was federal funds that come in for the care of people in jail, R being used 4 other things. Many prisons systems R doing this N getting away with it. There is a Juvenile detention center that was not giving the juveniles required by law psychological evaluations before they stand before the Judge. This court told the news that it was not receiving enough fed funds, blaming Federal Government. That Judge spent 6 hundred thousand dollars 2 redecorate
This is just terrible. I know exactly what you mean. Mental illness is not a crime.
However, you are lucky to be in the UNited States. In Scotland, having a mental illness can be deemed a breach of the peace offence. Its terrible how police officers deem this problem.
the reason why they're arrested for low misdemeanor and disorderly persons offenses is because their offense is medical in nature either directly or assumed and by proxy. jail diversion thus avoids case law
If any viewers of this video would like to comment on the topic of schizophrenia & community living, particularly for schizophrenic people who have been violent when psychotic, please reply to this post. I am a writer (not schizophrenic) who is seeking some brief perspectives on this subject for publication. Thanks.
@continentalvictory Look at my story of my son Bryce. He is also predispostioned for Schizophrenia. I saw bouts/signs/episodes/burst of schizophrenia in my child when I visited him in jail. He was being medicaly neglected. He was also smoking weed. I have documentation that shows his stress was increasing thus increasing psychosis. A lot was happening to My child. And this story is also about a cover up. My father had schizophrenia and he took his life at age 39. 2012RELELNTLESS@gmail.com
So these people can harass innocent people and commit disorderly conduct then get off with basically a slap on the wrist! How appalling is this legal systems approach to reducing crime! I know many people who suffer from a mental illness as debilitating as this woman's and they are highly functional adults. Mental illness isn't a crime but breaking the law is!
Criminal Justice and Mental Health systems are collaborating more and more, throughout the country, in an attempt to disrupt the revolving door which some individuals with untreated mental illness find themselves caught in. For those citizens who have committed a non-violent misdemeanor, and who are in need of mental health treatment, jail diversion offers a direct and immediate link to services that have proven to help many lead fulfilling productive lives.
Police, aided by long overdue mental health training now available to them, are using their discretion wisely to only refer those whose criminal conduct is obviously a by-product of their symptoms. Consequently, jail space is now more available for those offenders who actually pose a threat to public safety.
Lives are being turned around and tax dollars are being saved, as the systems involved are getting to the root of the problem as opposed to punishing / incarcerating someone for actions brought about by an untreated mental illness.
