Close iTunes and disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Click the Windows Start button Start button.

In the Start Search field type Services.

In the Programs section of the search results, Click "Services".

Select Apple Mobile Device and click Stop the service.

After the service has stopped, click Start the service.

After the Apple Mobile Device service has started again, open iTunes and connect the device.

Very interesting, got error 1600 BECAUSE of the extra line in the hosts file and deleting it helped. Must have been there from an earlier JB

go to the location of the host file, drag it to the desktop (or cut and paste it to desktop), open it from the desktop, edit the host file, save, then drag it back to the original folder (or cut and paste it back into folder)

@TennisKing23 Google TinyUmberella, download, run and save SHSH file, then run SHSH server and shift + restore in itunes, select 4.2.1. If you dont have 4.2.1 shsh saved in tinyumberlla, it will fail. Either way, the latest version of Redsn0w jailbreaks 4.3

Everyone Please Note: If your iPhone has never been Jailbroken with Cydia installed this will not work for you. Basically Cydia has to store your SHSH files so you can downgrade to a firmware. Without using Cydia or TinyUmbrella iTunes will not allow you to downgrade. By putting the information into the host file we are basically directing iTunes to go to the Cydia servers instead of Apple so it will give you permission to downgrade. If we didn't do this, Apple would reject the downgrade.

@townbiscuit Do a clean restore on itunes to 3.1.3 then restore to 3.1.2 and run blackrai1n. That will jailbreak you and is all you need to do for 2G.

@svsboss Your SHSH blobs must be stored via Cydia or TinyUmberella. Open Cydia, on the main page at the top it has the firmware SHSH blobs that are stored for your specific device. If nothing is there, then this will not work for you.

I dont understand. By editing the hosts file you trick itunes into looking at Saurik's server for the shsh blobs, but how does that stop 16xx errors? I encounter error 1601 well after the restore has been verified (itunes finds the shsh blob in cydia). Or is this only for firmware 4.0?

For anyone who is still getting errors. Your SHSH blobs must be on file with Cydia in order for this to work. If you have not yet updated to 4.0 and you are on 3.1.2 or lower, open Cydia and at the top of the screen it will ask if you want to save SHSH for your phone. After that is done you can follow this video for unlocked and jailbroken iOS 4.0.

Update: if this doesn't work for you, when you restore from backup, setup your iphone as a new one. That's what made it happen for me. And more then likely you can use your own custom firmware; with that said.

@MissLadyFee my friend has a 3gs but didn't save his shsh now he had his phone JB with blackra1n on 3.1 which was tethered so every time it shuts down he has to use blackra1n, so one day he used spirit to open his phone which was wrong then he updated his phone to 4.0.1 which was ok but then got stuck in recovery mode so every time he tries to restore he gets 1002 error tried everything but nothing works.

@JongaLife probably because your modem firmware is 5.13.04 which this wont work on, also you will need your SHSH file saved on Cydia's servers.
