In 1982 Decker ran a 1.58.33 800m (in Switzerland) and a 31.35 10.000m (in Eugene) in only 48 hours. No one else (doped or not) was, or is, able to do it.
karrtt1234 What do you mean? Oh maybe you mean the races when the other nobodies put a traget on her cause they couldn't beat her so why not knock her down.
Sorry insane but decker was greatest us distance runner ever on the womans side. Joan benoit was awesome but decker dominated like no other american. Never had Olympic sucess so that of course hurts resume. Ran with such grace. Too bad everyone remembers only the Zola mistake.
mary makes the whole race. frontrunning like she is expending 6 to 8% more energy than the others. that is gutsy. front runners cant normally win a race. this is awesome!
If she looked where she was going then she would of probably won, but typical US crowd started to abuse a 19 year old girl who was blasted for the country she was born in, as if she had any say in that or tripping some running behind you.

that was the olympic final that she was robbed off, she was robbed by that apathied zola budd and the steroid piuca but here she proves she was the queen ,love u amry and revenge is sweet
Im going to have to mention the name Kara Goucher. One week shes racing the mile sub 4:30. A few weeks later she placed 3rd in Boston. If thats not an amazing range, then I have no idea what is.
Mary Decker still holds ARs in the 1500m, mile, 2000m, and 3000m, records that have lasted years and will continue to stand for years to come. Hopefully, not far from the future, we can see an athlete that not only has that amazing talent but also has the love Mary Decker had for the sport.
The GREAT Mary Decker Slaney. It was a shame that she had that "little" incident with Zola Budd at the 1984 Olympics. Could have been a possible DOUBLE Olympic Gold medal for Slaney.
Zola Budd "tripped" her...Decker put herself in a bad spot in that race and did not maintain her position....and acted like a blooming crybaby when she fell...heck I have been tripped in a meet and got back up and won....she just wanted attention and sympathy.....
The reason I fell, some people think she tripped me deliberately. I happen to know that wasnt the case at all. The reason I fell is because I am and was very inexperienced in running in a pack."
In 1976 Kazankina had such a powerful finishing kick that at 800 metres, a way shorter and more sprinting distance then this, she went from 5th to winning by a whopping 5 metres in only the last 50 metres or half a homestretch of the race. The Bulgarian girl who thought she had the gold was left in tears. What on earth happened to that kind of finishing speed. She doesnt have even close to that here.
@karrtt1234 well, she should have won gold in olympcs and would have won if she didnt have such bad luck. she was either too young, hurt, or she fell during the race. Had she not had such bad luck at the olympics she would have won muliple medals no doubt. Regardless shes one of the best distance runners to ever live
I'm not sure if it's because I only really started watching athletics in 1985, and during that season Decker would basically go to the front of every race and run hard, but it was really odd to hear the commentators questioning that tactic.
I agree with you...jimmymack...but WOW, what a finish....does anyone have the full race, or any more of Mary running?? She was absolutely FUN to watch....
that looked suspiciously like teamwork between Decker and Sly.

Mary Decker shouldn't have any AR records. She is a stinking blood doping cheater!! Ban all her records! Erase her from the sport of Track and Field!

i don't think the USA will ever have another woman this lifetime run that fast across such an astounding range of events.
however, given the year the American woman have had in 2009, there are more shooting stars creeping closer 2 her records.
Jenny Barringer & Christin Wurth-Thomas both ran 3:59 1,500s. Shannon Rowbury & Anna Willard are right around 4 minutes.
Barringer's best at steeplechase but has 5,000m speed so i wouldn't be surprised if they threaten her 2 & 3K records soon.

Her hip was injured, asshole!
You are correct about her failure at tactics:
The reason I fell, some people think she tripped me deliberately. I happen to know that wasnt the case at all. The reason I fell is because I am and was very inexperienced in running in a pack."

As exciting as that race was, that commentary was possibly the worst I have ever heard!

Charlie Jones and Frank Shorter were ok. Wyomia Tyus was a much better runner than announcer.
boldello 3 years ago
I agree. Charlie Jones and Frank Shorter
could have commented on these races without
Tyus just fine. That race of Mary's though
was just awesome. She was just great.
