I've got a small concert coming up next month, we're gunna cover Listen by Beyonce. There's gunna be a drummer (me), vocalist and pianist. But my drum by itself is waaaaaaaaaaaay too loud and I need to muffle it very very very hard. I've already mufled my toms, snare and bass, but i can't find a way to properly muffle my cymbals. I just know you guys can help! :)
@wannabeers Try using Pro Mark Hot Rods. You get the same responsive feel that you get with drum sticks, but the sound levels are way lower :) hope this helps
I'm having a horrible resonance problem, could the toilet paper work on all the drums? I'm just starting so I'm not comfortable with my tunning to try the snare tightening.
With my kit I got this smal container with pink grease looking stuff in it, I'm wondering now if that is moon gel and if so how do I apply it?
hey jared could you pls reply, your using felt cymbal holder things (dont know the correct name) but the cymbals move freely, on my kit the cymbals are a little restricted even though the felts arnt tight to the cymbal could you tell me why yours move so freely. thanks
Hey jared, i own a basic drum kit that has two tom tom's that are mounted onto the bass drum, i also have a floor tom. i notice in this video you have four tom tom's on your kit. i am trying to buy another tom but i am worried that ill screw up and buy the wrong tom. so am i looking for a specific drum? or do i just buy a tom like the one i own and just tune it so it fills in.
@forgotmyname1288 hey, it really shouldn't matter if you Dont care how your drum set looks, I personally would not buy a fourth tom unless it matched the rest of my kit but im fussy about thing like that. just so long you tune it up right it should sound nice and fit with the rest of the kit.
PS: buy a tom with the same wood inside it as your others, this will help with the sound matching.
Question for jared, did you ever try Evans e - rings for muffling toms? I noticed you didn't mention them in the video but I use them for my toms and snare and I much prefer them to the tape and tissue method
Sorry for the seriously n00b question Jared -- what does the hole in your bass drum head do? I can see it makes it easier to change the muffling, but what does it do to the sound?
@miketwo345 The hole allows for more air to flow out of the bass drum which will change the sound of the drum. It's also great for engineers so they can mic it up.
omg i dont see how people dont like jared ! hes like amazing , on my opinion i think he is the best at explaining , hes improved my drumming dramatically !

@missystu Jared explains things perfectly. Just because you are jealous he has an audience to listen to him, unlike you, doesnt give you the right to disrespect his teaching styles. Keep your negative input to yourself and stay off his videos if you don"t like them no one makes you watch them.
@missystu I have been using Jared's videos ever since I first started playing drums and I find them really helpful. And looking back to those beginner years I did require the extra explanation because everything was new information. I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT MUSICAL TALENT - IM TALKING ABOUT "INSTRUCTION".
I'm offering FREE advice to help YOU do better and make better sales instead of boring your students to death but you just don't seem to get...Amazing. Simply amazing. Best of luck!
@missystu perhaps for you, a lot of explanations in Jared's videos are skip-able because for a person who has been playing music for a long time and have a good understanding of music, you don't have to think about some of these simple explanations on a conscious level anymore. as such, you take it for granted that it's 'common sense'. but if you were the 'experienced' instructor that you claim you are, you would understand that some people actually need the explanations.
@missystu He provides hundreds of free lessons, a range of DVD packages created by great drummers, has sponsorships, and takes time out of his life to help people learn how to play the instrument he loves. Its simple so that everyone can understand it, drummers of all intelligences and levels. Whether you have played drums for 42 years or 800 years. It doesn't necessarily make you a better drummer, or a better person. Take your superiority complex elsewhere.
@missystu 42 years of experience doesn't automatically give you credibility; you may very well have stopped changing the way you think after, say, your first 5 years of experience? either way, people believe in Jared because they've seen for themselves what he does. i'm not challenging you to make a video and you have no obligation to do so, but if you want to make come in here and make comments like you're gonna teach Jared a thing or two, perhaps you should establish yourself first
@missystu Don't watch their videos and leave us alone. I always find Jared's explanation to be really useful. Don't you try to take that away from us.
@missystu My Youtube channels have over 30 million combined views and over 70,000 subscribers. I don't think I could achieve that if I was explaining things in a way people didn't understand. So like I said, I thank you for your comments, but you severely lack credibility in this situation. Instead of sitting at your computer and attempting to bully other drummers I recommend you put your money where you mouth is and film some video lessons. If they're good I'll give you credit.
@missystu Not much to question. Arrogance mixed with rudeness and a bloated self image. I really cannot imagine anyone sacrificing their own sense of self worth by listening to one thing you profess to teach. I have an ever so humble idea...........get your own drum lessons going here before you start dogging someone else for doing so themselves. My guess is the only thing you could teach is how someone should never act towards others.
@missystu in your first comment you said you felt frustrated and insulted by the over-explanation. In this last one you've just insulted Jared by calling him "dummy". Think this: You did insult... Jared didn't insult... And you wrote a quote a few comments ago, something like "those who pretend to teach, must learn how to listen". And you my mate... with your 42 years experience as a trained instructor (respectable) wasn't able to listen... I hope this help you as a life lesson. :)
Even your return letter to me was insulting MY intelligence. You should strongly consider my advice....or let youself look not so bright. It's your life. You can learn from it or not. I'm trying to help you.
@missystu I appreciate you commenting, but you have to understand that everyone learns at different speeds. Some students need more explanation, and some will need less. In my case, it's always better to explain things for longer rather then to try and shorten and condense everything. I agree there are probably certain parts that I could leave out though. Thanks for your comment!
@missystu We don't need your 42 YEARS EXPERIENCE AS A TRAINED INSTRUCTOR. what we need is to learn how to muffle our drums. It's not over explaining, because he just want us to really learn how to muffle our drums. Just keep your mouth shut if what you're going to say isn't going to help.
Jared...at the front of Bass drum...the light reflection showed it was not tightened to much, is this a consideration to get your BD sound w/o resonating too much?
btw...thanks for your video...pretty helpful...I've had Evans(oiled filled) they sounded great on my Gretsch (concert toms)...yeah, old school w/o rims or bottoms. They sounded great!
@sprydo7 I actually should've straightened that out but never got to look at it under the lights. I should've taken some extra time and evened it all out.
@freedrumlessons Thanks i just bought my drum yesterday and im traing to follow up on what you said. and @missystu its VERY HARD to learn something from a computer so its better if he explains it bit by bit cuz you can't see everything from a camera...
@SynesterCblack Well, at least you know you're a douche for making such a dumb comment. I've played on hundreds of tracks for artists in many different studios and a large part of the time, the engineer asks me to muffle the drums. Learning how to do this is very important if you want to drum in the studio and work with artists. Don't listen to this comment everyone, they're DEAD WRONG.
Not to pick sides or anything, but I personally find Remo heads to be much better than Evans in the battle of too much or not enough resonance. Just my opinion. I use the clear ambassador on the bottom and the coated emperor on the top head. U may want to try that Jared.
@kevystead I have tried it and never got the sound I was looking for. Remo definitely makes great heads, but personally, I prefer Evans. Thanks for your comment!
@chickensandbeandip It's not that it doesn't work, it just doesn't give me the exact sound I want. I usually use it in conjunction with other muffling.
...Or you could just play loudly, I always leave everything (except my bass drum) unmuffled, as the resonance will generally just disappear into the mix when playing as a band, or when playing hard and fairly fast on your own. Before now I've had engineers want to tape a cigarette packet to my snare, all that does is make it sound awful :(
@ChazzLord I truly think what sounds "good" is subjective. The engineer that's taping your drums is doing that because they think it sounds better that way. There is no right or wrong in that case, just opinion. I have had engineers tune my drums up and I think they sound horrible but it doesn't matter cause that's how they want it to sound and they are the ones paid to record the drums for the artist. Thanks for your comment!
@freedrumlessons yeah, I just really hate that kind of 'dead' drum sound, you know? When I my kit gets recorded I just want it to sound like my kit, as opposed to something that's purely there to cut through a mix. But yeah I did find your tips on muffling the bass drum and lowering snare rattle very useful, especially for when I play quieter songs :) Rant over haha ;)
Those wrinkles at the end were bothering me
Also does it help a lot to match batter/resonant Tom pitches? Other sites say that. How well does it work?

For the people who cannot find/afford this stuff here is an easy way that made my drum sound SOOOOO GOOD!
Step 1: Get Duct tape and a tissue
Step 2: Fold tissue
Step 3: Put folded tissue on snare drum and duct tape it.
Step 4: Test your newly muffled drum!
I have only tried this on a snare because my other drums sound fine but try it if you want! Works so good for me.

...Or you could just play loudly, I always leave everything (except my bass drum) unmuffled, as the resonance will generally just disappear into the mix when playing as a band, or when playing hard and fairly fast on your own.
