@number1thespian its nothing wrong with hating just a sport,im a saint lover, but Christ is the one to love and worship,God Bless Drew Brees for not just being a New Orleans Saint, but a Saint of GOD
@busherbee Oh come on. There is obviously something better in store for you that a possible high school football career would stop. Keep your head up.
Drew Brees Is Just A man with a heart and sinful hands as we all are we all make mistakes mature or not he is still a christian and being famous and being a christian is extremely hard and filled with temptations and just because of that give him credit we are all equal famous or not so treat him like you would your frind at church . OMG. Mardi Gras isnt a pagan holiday. Brees' isn't evil for dresing up in a costume. I guess ya'll think all of us in Louisiana are going to hell b/c we celebrate mardi Gras. Bourbon St. Mardi Gras isn't how all of Louisiana celebrate.
Too bad Mr. Brees doesn't allow his relationship with Jesus to affect his behavior. Brees led the Mardi Gras parade this week in New Orleans, dressed as Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. As Brees addressed the crowd, he said, "We love you New Orleans. Hail Bacchus."
Hail Bacchus? Hail the god of WINE? Hail another god but Jesus? You're a great football player, Mr. Brees, but you're no role model for Christians, I'm sorry to say.
I sure do, but I don't say, "Hail Santa" before the meal. And if part of Christmas was represented with an open appreciation for some god other than Jesus Christ, or something contrary to Jesus Christ (like wine), I wouldn't have anything to do with it.
Wine is contrary to Jesus? That's odd, I seem to recall his first miracle was turning water into wine, the good stuff too.
Sorry, but Brees's participation in a pagan cultural holiday like Mardi Gras does not mean he is "worshiping a god other than Jesus". Other than participating in a pagan holiday (not unlike Christmas) what evidence do you have that Jesus is not the center of Brees's life?
Do I think Brees believes in and worships Bacchus JUST because he agreed to play the part in order to receive the high honor bestowed on him by the people of New Orleans?
No, and I think your legalistic insistence that Brees' mere participation in a pagan festival is exactly the reason why many are turned away from Christianity (not, btw, a person like Brees' merely participating in a pagan festival).
You're letting your apparent love for Brees and the passion of your desire to win an argument cloud your reason, friend.
No one said Bees believes in and worships Bacchus. (Although he did HAIL him.) However, ones allegiance to Christ is more important than any given to a people group. I recall the Apostle Paul being given one such honor, being called a god in the Book of Acts. Did he accept that honor because he appreciated the people? What saith the Scripture?
I don't know Brees so I can't very well be accused of loving him past what I've seen here (which includes his clear affirmation of his love for Christ).
Look, as far as I can tell (and this is from Brees' own mouth from the video above) Brees is not a very mature Christian.
Stop trying to cut him down.
Brees never claimed to be speaking with seminary-level theological accuracy and given his spiritual maturity level I for one can forgive him for that.
A public figure making public claims needs to understand that every public action will be scrutinized. Brees is a mature enough public figure to know that. Sorry, but a "clear affirmation of his love for Christ," should compel him not to hail any god but Christ. That's Christianity 101. I'm not on a campaign to ruin Drew Brees. But I think it's important to balance the scales of all those who latch on to professed Christian celebrities & use them as role models. Caution is advised.
BTW: He didn't even participate in the festivities afterwards iirc he went back to Disneyland WITH HIS FAMILY! Yeah, that's exactly the type of immoral and lascivious behavior I would expect from a devout follower of Bacchus.
Well, that's great! Is he supposed to be praised for doing what is reasonable? Again, your making assumptions and adding words to my mouth. Where did I ever say that Brees was a devout follower of Bacchus.
The bottom line is that you are arguing for the right of a professed Christian to attend & receive honor from "pagans" and to "hail" one of their gods. I happen to believe it's not appropriate. Which position would Jesus Christ approve of?
Meat sacrificed to idols. Your understanding of appropriateness is not the standard we are to live by. If playing a part in a pagan parade did not violate Brees's conscience then I say kudos to him.
One thing I know Christ would not approve of is my judging of another man's servant.
It's not a matter of violating ones conscience. It's not his to violate if he's a true Christian. He belongs to Christ. Would Christ stand in that Chariot with him as he's dressed as another god and hails another god? You're a Christian apologist. I think you know the answer.
For the record, I like Brees. I think he's a great football player. I'm even glad he's a Christian, if he really is. I just think he made a bad judgment. Can I forgive him? Certainly. But he still did wrong.
So..... A guy who has just won a SUPER bowl and is the MVP of it cant go out and party? Please understand that some people .... CHRISTAN people like myself don't restrict ourselves to having fun like you.
i'm sure this little clip doesn't encapsulate all that drew believes about the gospel ... but i must admit: it's reminding me of how IMPORTANT it is that folks DON'T convert because "God needs a few good men." Jesus didn't deal with that issue initially. He dealt with repentance and faith.
it's scary, y'all, because "God needs a few good men" won't sustain someone when hard times come, lust tries to destroy, pop dies of cancer, temptation to let it all hang out since you're a celebrity and have all the money you'll ever need, kids act up ... etc. "God needs a few good men" can easily fall by the way-side then. but if a person takes note of mark 1 (and all of Scripture) which preaches "repent" and "believe" ...
and if they realize they're to live LIFESTYLES of repentance, faith, abiding in Christ, abiding in His Word, obeying His commands ... because He lived to grant them His righteousness & died to receive the penalty for their sins, watch out. solidness in the faith usually follows. so i'm frightened by partial testimonies like this, though i'm sure drew would say more if the interview hadn't been cut off.
In response to rockcrawler, if Mr. Brees talks about God at all today (especially being on the stage he is on) it's phenominal. Why? Because people persecute Christians and stereotype us because of people like you cut down other believers and bretheren that dont say Jesus every breath they get. If I offended you at all please forgive me, in not trying to be harsh.
@meer8 Amen meer8! It is so frustrating to watch Christians who feel compelled to cut other Christians down just because they don't measure up to someone else's preferred theological standard.
Come on guys, Brees claims Christ and as far as I can tell he acts on what he claims by reaching for his son first after winning the superbowl rather than the Lombardi trophy.
if you are a true christion, you dont judge others, especially if you do not truely know them. in the bible it says judge not lest you be judged. brees is not perfict, none of us are, he does do alot of good for alot of people. all i think that he is trying to do here is to let people know the importance of serving the lord in what ever way is possible for a person to do. befor you judge someone look at yourself first and ask what you can do to better yourself
the fact that Drew even mentions Jesus Christ in a day and age when it is taboo is something to be marvelled and praised! He's done a good thing so quit knocking about the small stuff. He's our brother in Christ--deal with it!
Awesome, Brees! I see nothing but humility and love in Drew's comments. Why be blinded like a Pharisee and look for fault. This IS a good man, not by his own efforts but by the grace of God and he knows it. Thank you Drew for sharing your faith with the world.
Mr. Brees, I am extremely excited that you and several other players have accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour! This team originated to give our God glory! We must always put HIM first and remember to give HIM thanks in everything whether good or bad. The race is not given to the swift nor to the strong but to he who endureth to the end! Actually, the gospel is not that "God is looking for a few good men," but rather that He is seeking to save sinners. We actually need to first understand that we are not "good men," at all, but lost in sin, and in need of a Savior.
One can never truly see their need for Christ, until they first see sin for what it truly is.
I thank God that while we were yet in sin, Christ died for us!!
Honestly rockcrawler? He said it about as blatantly as you can. He accpeted Jesus as God's one and only son who died for all of us . No one can get to God except through Jesus. The trinity is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. They are all one in the same.
Honestly meer8? Maybe we were listening to different interviews, but I don't hear any mention of sin or salvation. I certainly didn't hear anything about no one getting to God except through Jesus. It may seem like a small issue, but the implications are huge. Drew's testimony--although it can come across as warm and fuzzy--reeks of "works righteousness" (what I'm doing for God to look on me with favor) rather than grace (what God has done for me without me deserving it at all).
You said Trust in Jesus, that's good, but trust in what. We must trust that we know we are sinners, we have sinned against God. We know we do not deserve heaven, rather, we deserve hell for our sins. BUT,we know that Jesus was God incarnate, lived a sinnless , and went to the Cross, was beaten, destroyed and killed, on the Cross. FOR YOU. Brees' participation in a pagan holiday dressed as a god of wine, while hailing that god of wine, is totally against Christ. Do you know your Bible?
Wine itself is not the issue. Bacchus represents more than a colorful juice of a grape, and I think you know that.
What evidence do you have that I'm claiming that Jesus is not the center of Brees' life? Did I say that?
All any of us can do is judge FRUIT. A person can SAY anything they want. It's what they DO that talks.
