I like the John Raitt version of 'Hey There' and I'm in love with daughter Bonnie, but in all truth you'd be hard pushed to equal the version by Ted Hockridge who, incidentally took over the John Raitt part in The Pajama Game for the West End version.
This show had/has so many clever moments (ie: the Dictaphone), they are almost impossible to count. Today's musical theatre hardly comes close to something like this.
I always considered John Rait an Irish tenor with a greater than normal range. What a voice!. Where are the John Raits, Gordon MacRaes and Mario Lanzas of today?. Most modern singers seem to have a cookie cutter style. Has training changed so much over the years?
@WikeddTung Hi. I've been trying reply, but for some reason it's not going through, I' ll try again. I checked out your recommendation and agree Patrick Wilson has a very good voice. Maybe is was just the setting in which he was singing (intimate), but I felt he needed to project more. Aspire to reach the rafters as it were. Otherwise, I think your opinion of him is true: his voice great quality and style.
Raitt was a big, handsome man with a magnificent voice. Whether that voice was baritone, high baritone or anything in between doesn't truly matter. Nor does it matter that voice aside, he wasn't a great actor. What he DID have, in total, made him one of the American musical theater's finest leading men.
What an artist. He essentially imported several operatic singing techniques to musical theater, and, at least in my opinion, these innovations made him the best singer in classic American musical theater.
A beautiful sample of what John Rait could do with a great tune. Plus the dictaphone not only records Mr. Rait's voice but it also records the invisible studio orchestra. Perfecto.
My wife and I just watched the "Pajama Game" with Doris Day and John Raitt - who gave a superb performance. What a talent .. what a performance. Great post, TheTomMunday .. Thanks!

@musicaldogs I would guess that not everyone listening to this knows that he was Bonnie Raitt's father.

He isn't using falsetto, he sings in full voice at the end.
John Raitt, the best.
