An expected and dramatic increase in world demand for energy over the next 30 years may expose the continent to countries and markets looking for alternative petroleum supplies. If Antarctica is indeed eventually opened for oil exploration activities, which many believe it will be, the potential for oil pollution occurrences such as oil tanker spills, the dumping of waste oil, natural oil seeps and well blowouts will rise substantially.
In an upcoming Asian Survey story titled “China’s Rise in Antarctica,” New Zealand researcher Anne-Marie Brady suggests, “Chinese-language polar-science discussions are dominated by debates about resources and how China might gain its share.”
The Chinese government says of course it will be drilling at its newly retrofitted base, called Kunlun, but only for science.
From 25 March to 5 April 2009, BP will host an expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula led by the polar explorer, Robert Swan
We will select 50 students to join us on the expedition, which will be a unique opportunity to unite the commitment and fresh insight of tomorrow’s decision makers, some of the world’s experts in energy and climate change and BP senior leaders such as Vivienne Cox, chief executive of BP’s Alternative Energy business.
Cool!
