  • @robcat2075 that's right :)

  • basset clarinet... that looks like a regular clarinet with some extra notes added on the end, right?

  • What kind of clarinet is this?

  • he reminds me of a penguin the way he moves around.

  • he is so funny whe he move ahahaah like idiot ROBOT

  • Excellent character!

  • surprisingly this sounds almost identical to how martin frost interpreted the song the same kind of registered clarinet and same articulations and stuff except he did this piece way to fast on some part that could be slower and also the tr.s other than copying martin, he did great

  • that's a Bb sound... it should be darker.

  • It sounds so Mozart! Pink and Turquoise!!!! XDXDXD

  • Like how he bobbles his head to the sides when he plays Lol. X)

    He's like legendary.

  • @LawlietShadow it must be a nightmare for the cameramen to try to get fingershots! XD

  • this guy is coming to my school 0.o

  • An amazing player.. but I just want grab him by the shoulders, shake him hard and yell "STAND STILL!"

  • @eyesopenuw . I agree entirely. I've just watched this on BBC4 this evening and he did jig about a bit. I expect he'll quieten down a bit when he gets older.

  • @eyesopenuw there is absolutely nothing wrong with moving while playing...

  • I get to meet him on january 29th!! (: Can't wait!

  • I get to see him live on january 29th. I'm so excited! he's an idol for me as a fellow clarinetist. ;]

  • hehe his movements while playing remind me of those of a penguin lol.

not trying to insult him, i love this guy, but i just found it kinda funny

    Great playing!

  • a lot of technique that has no expression...awefully flat too. Other than that, nice player.

  • @dasteufelhund its the camera, you can even tell when he plays loudly, the camera tries to diminish his sound and instead it creates a ringing sound.

Julian Bliss is considered one of the best clarinet soloists, and you're stupid if you cant hear or feel the expression.

  • @itchygoober not enough phrasing, please don't tell me you find this adequate.

  • @dasteufelhund It's okay for a performance I guess... But it's definitely not what he could normally do

  • @itchygoober agreed.

  • Nothing special..

  • There are no words even half good enough to describe how amazing Julian Bliss is.

  • he is an inspiration to me as a clarinetist.

  • 4:47

I caught him circular breathing! :)

  • @RidleyPhantom saw it too

  • I'm going on a feild trip to meet him this Friday i can't wait!!!!!! I play clarenet too but I'm so awful I hope he doesn't make me play in front of him. My Step dad, however, thinks that practice makes perfect. It's not that I don't agree but I have been practicing for three years and I still suck!!!!!!!!!

  • @silvermist6396 Practice does not make perfect, "practice makes permanent." If you never get instructed correctly on how to practice correctly you'll never get any better. You need a few private lessons and the determination to follow through with the methods your teacher gives you.

  • thank you for this simple but invaluable lesson that's easily forgotten.

  • @PuffsPlusWithLotion

No, friend. I just mean that the lesson is helpful to me in 2 senses: 1) it reminds me what I should remember but often forget; 2) the best and most useful in life are often expressed simply.

  • @mouneeray Glad I could help :D

  • meno male esistono i geni come lui così posso apprezzare anche i mediocri come me....come diceva salieri nel film mozart: VIVA LA MEDIOCRITA'!! MEDIOCRI DI TUTTO IL MONDO, UNITEVI!

  • Well he plays effortlessly, unlike most players who play this concerto.

  • Al 6:10 butta via le note così...mah

  • Martin Frost the best!

  • Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh

  • lol that low D at the end sounds awesome

  • @xingfan1227 i bet you my selmer privilege bass carinet sounds better :P

  • Lul.

    Well When i meet him.

    He will know.

Bass clarinet, Well in some way's harder, In some easier. Like Most music is eaiser, Then clarient, But the high range, Is harder, to play.

    Eistedford's Gahh.

    Dont even start me.

    Lul.

    You live Aussie ?

    JULIAN = My babie's father. <3

  • Amen to that!

and does he know that you are going to have his babies???

How hard is Bass Clarinet to play? I want to give it ago, I play clarinet.

Eisteddfords are annoying, and take way to long. I have one this Saturday.

    Julian Bliss = AMAZING

    me = Jealous

  • Im so jealous of his skills.

    Worst thing happend to me.

Julian Bliss Came to australia. Wanting to do concert's at schools. And here our concert comps are called "Eistedfords". Julian wanted to come to my school to play. My teacher said, No to him. Because we had an eistedford that day. I almost cried. D: I would kiss this boy if i could. I play clarient, and bass clarinet. Im playing this whole work's for my grade 8 exam. D: When i finish school, Im going to see him. Then have his babies. <3

  • that was freaking awesome but what is the difference between the b flat clarinet and the bassett clarinet???

  • The basset clarinet Bliss use here is an A basset clarinet, that is, it arrives down to C, instead of the costumary E of most clarinets. That's because Mozart concerto was composed in A major.

The B flat clarinet is the most used model that you can find in the simphony orchestras as well in the jazz ensembles or in the bands.

  • This was a good performance by a student player period! There are 100's of teen aged clarinetists in the US who can do quite as well!

    Believe it!

  • So true.

  • hey!! just wanna say that julian is not only an amazing clarinetest absolutely fantastic but also a really decent and funny guy!!

  • in 2:10 you can appreciate how does julian does the continuate respiration without stopping to blow.

He is a fantastic clarinetist! He can be the best if he tries to.

  • I have to say Julian Bliss is extraordinary but just listen to Fröst play this concerto!! WOO HOO!!

  • hear the mozart concerto by

Tale Ognenovski here on youtube. He is incredible.

  • Tale Ognenovski is the worst player i ever heard, he isnt a musical genius as he says ; PLEASE EVERYBODY listen to the one of Tale Ognenovski you will be amazed , not in a good way :)

  • first of all, he's amazing. i played this solo my freshman year of high school and i did ok in my opinion, but nothing compared to this.

second, i totes agree with clarinetgeek7299. he takes it really fast. even some of the other stuff i've heard him play is super fast. you don't need to play everything as fast as you can in order for it to sound challenging.

nonetheless, he has incredible talent! i love his tone it's so dark yet playful

  • I think a tempo of 118 is pretty good... I hardly think that tempo of 104 is going to cut it for being a good allegro moderato... but that is just my opinion :P

  • just random thing

his movement was so funny when he was doing the runs

    twitiching his body

    lol

    nothing bad

i just thought it was funny

  • he took all three of the movements too fast. its just a personal preference i have..i think this concerto should be more playful, not a race to the finish.

  • look for him playing one at his concerts it will be during the encore and un anounced hopefully i dont get in trouble for telling you guys all this

  • hes young and curious guys and im sure wants to explore the environment also they wouldnt let me record his performance for us (pricks) but they did so if they put it on the internet ill just have to go steal it (booyah) so maybe i can still get it on here so any body reading this he was very impressed with the horn and anyone thinking of starting clarinet or thinking of buying a new student horn make sure you get a bliss clarinet by leblanc/backun

  • actually he seemed very mature for 19 and not only that but he was very willing to answer any question we had i do think he was getting tired of following all the big wigs around they shouldve let him look around himself for him to understand how that clarinet gets from a piece of wood to a finished product u know right down to the knitty gritty but instead they pushed him around here and there and seemingly tried to hide all the down and dirty parts of the process

  • tommarrow he will be performing a private concert for our company and hopefully i can get it on video and share it with you also to prove im not just making this up he is really here and were are welcome to conversate with him and were encouraged to one of our people is what u would call a lil out there and she decided to be really friendly and went up and hugged him you should have seen the look on his face it was priceless

  • Hi my name is tim and i work for conn-selmer in elkhart indiana as i am writing this julian bliss is here at my place of work testing a new leblanc/backun line of clarinets called bliss clarinets obviously named after julian bliss the famous clarinet prodigy its very odd i am not an instrumental music buff per say but he is playing and it really sounds weird to hear somebody play like that especially when im used to hearing our testers they are not bad but sound like crap next to him sorry guys

  • I was in clarinet studio with Julian at Indiana University. I feel very sorry for him actually. He has literally had absolutely no childhood to enjoy, and he was an arrogant prick back then too. I certainly hope he's matured in the past few years. His technical playing has always been pristine, but he's lacked a certain musical depth that only age can provide.

  • Keep in mind though that would have been when he was 11 or 12, so I'm sure he's grown up quite a bit since.

  • yeah I'm the best clarinet at my school, and I suck royally compared to him. I need to better my skill level so I can get a good scholarship into college. geez and I'm only a sophomore

  • haha me too!

but im a junior...you sound like someone who i can get along with =D

  • yeah I played this piece last year at solo and ensemble, and this year I'm playing a piece thats a grade 5 but in my opinion it's a little harder than this piece. Its on youtube, its called "Adagio E Tarantella" watch the one with the guy that looks like he's playing in a church. theres a mirror across from the camera.

  • did you make all-state?

  • no, :( for some reason thats the only time I ever get nervous is for All State auditions. I'm fine at All county.I made 5th out of 20 and there only seniors and a junior ahead of me and I'm a sophomore. but it's all State for some reason gets to me. I'm gonna try again next year.

  • making all-state in Florida is difficult. I tried out this year, I couldn't believe i didn't make it. totally nailed the audition.

but the all-state tryouts aren't always like taking the best people. I went to festival of winds this year. the only clarinet to not make all-state in the wind ensemble besides one of person and in my opinion we were two of the best players there.

  • I can believe it. I'm going to solo and ensemble tomorrow Feb.14th hope I get superior I'm playing Adagio E Tarantella by Ernesto Cavallini

  • good luck. I'm playing this movement on friday for my solo and ensemble.

  • thanks although I freaked out and got nervous. I sucked. I ended up getting an excellent. i'm gonna try to get it on video playing it at my best. when I do I'll try posting it. cus I want some feedback on how I'm doing.

  • i hate this guy cuz hes soo good....

    yeah thats right im jealous.

    bastard.

    lol.

    all in ggod fun

  • Yupp, this is in the Clarinet in A. fo sho.

    I love this guy. :D

  • I daresay, is he playing the clarinet this piece was originally made for?

  • Yes, but nowadays people play it on the A clarinet most of the time.

  • Well of course, I just thought it was cool that someone whipped out an old old style of clarinet for him.

  • no, he should be playing a basset, it's meant for a basset in A

  • I'm 15 and I play clarinet at a normal high school level... but HOLY crap this guy is good. Makes me both jealous and envious of his immense talent at the same time.

  • Hahaha, indeed. It's a clarinettist thing. I'm surprised he's not bouncing on the balls of his feet for those staccatos.

  • he plays very very well but speeds up some phrases. awesome job : ]

  • It's all about how the musician feels he should play it man haha

  • tasteless interpretation of a great piece. Yes Julian, we know you have good technique. You don't have to play it faster than it should be.

  • Very good!

I just think that he plays some passages faster then it should be.

  • He tends to do that alot.

  • Lol indeed.

  • Nicely done Jules. :P

  • Eccezionale.

In ogni caso bravissimo e continua a migliorare sempre!!!

  • I really love how does he play, but I think they are running to much. I think this piece should be a little bit quiet. It's mozart!

    Nice sound!

  • But he's excelent still, a prodigy of the clarinet (Julian of course)...

  • It's just that this is a pice so pure and light(highlights of the music in the classical period), it doesn't deserve that...

  • I don't like the way he makes fast passages:

It's like he's hammering notes through your brain!!! And he's moving and rushing too much!!! Here it seems like he just can't take the proper pace for a classicist pice.

(Because this composition still belongs to the classicism, for those who didn't know, and all that play with the tempo and the phrasing is not part of that period!!!)

  • Impressive. One of the better youtube renditions.

  • splendido..

  • What kind of barrel is he using? From Canada, and I'm sure custom...but couldn't make out the brand... the throat tones are everything. The basset horn makes a world of difference with the added resonance! Great performance!

  • Morrie Backun wooden barrell

  • Ooh, I want one of those....my friend Charlotte let me try hers one day in orchestra, and it made a world of difference. :)

  • I saw this clarinet while I was on in a clarinet convention before an "All-State" performance. It was very expensive.

  • cool...hes fantastic 4 he's age.....good job julian...but that clarinet is weered :))

  • I never get tired of playing this piece....its amazing!

  • oh, dang... that means that I have to learn a *slightly* new instment.......

  • is it just me or does his clarinet NOT look like a clarinet..... it's longer and has some extra keys further down....... COOL!!!!!!!

  • It's a basset clarinet. Obviously since it is longer, the range can go even further than the E. Quite a few of Mozart's music is played on the basset clarinet.

  • I'm actually writing a paper on this piece this semester and it is a basset clarinet as Hlkeda126 pointed out. Mozart was friends with a virtuoso clarinetist named Anton Stadler who was well known for having an customized clarinet with a lower range, a basset clarinet. He was fascinated by the lower range of the clarinet. It is believed (with good reason) that Mozart wrote not only this concerto but the quintet with Stadler in mind.

  • And he's circular breathing as well!

  • No he isn't

  • Actually, he may have at 4:48. Unless he felt like puffing his cheeks up....

  • hmmm, maybe, but I still don't think he is. It's not a long phrase particularly, and I've played with Julian for about 5 years and never known that he could circular breathe...

  • Yeah, I was thinking about that when I put that reply up. I'm leaning towards your opinion. It's not a long phrase at all and circular breathing isn't necessary there (even I don't need to do that when I play that phrase). But then again, why did he puff up his cheeks?

Guess we'll never know unless we ask him eh? :P

  • he does circular breathe.

played this piece with him last year.

Good fun in the bar afterwards playing with straws and pints, aw the good times

  • how do you circular breathe?

  • The way it works is that you puff up your cheeks and use them as bellows so that you'll be able to keep the air going through the horn. While you're doing that, you breathe in through your nose. Basically you use circular breathing to play without stopping and taking a breath. Notable player would be Kenny G, who held a single note for 48 minutes. But within less than a year, a Costa Rican saxophonist nearly doubled Kenny G's record.

  • Omg... Sharon Kam played this, even his teacher, Sabine Meyer played this. Now its his turn. Lol.

  • Yes so many versions available of this concerto so it's really difficult to tell something new. This is an fine performance but too much similar to his teacher's Sabine Meyer version. Watch the Andrew Marriner version available from this user and compare them I say without any doubts that it's unfair comparison.
