It is ironic that the argument is to defend the "sanctity of marriage" when the divorce rate in America is over 50%! My partner and I have been together for over 12 years, and we've had to work it out when there was a problem, all without the same rights and protections as a hetero couple!

I think the problem in this whole controversy is that the word "marriage" is so strongly held and represents the union between man and woman. ANd because of these strongly held beliefs by Christians - we should just come up with a different name for a union between gay/lesbian couples.

Just call it something different - and make the rights the same as marriage. I think it would bring less opposition from organized religion. Just a thought! Can anyone thing of what to call it?
